BURGLAR-PIR-OOF SAFE.
Application filed Uctober 11, 1916.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, CARL l). KnNYoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oswego, in the county of Oswego and State of New York, have invented new and useful linprovements in BurglareProof Safes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in burglar proof safes and especially with reference to the provision of a safe bottom or wall of novel construction and which affords a vent should an attempt be made to open the safe by an explosion and which allows the gases generated by an explosion to escape from the safe without blowing out the safe door or otherwise seriously injur- `ing the safe.
The invention consists in the features of construction, combination, and arrangement of devices, hereinafter fully described and claimed.
ln the accompanying drawings Figure l is a plan of a portion of the bottom of a safe constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing a modified construction.
ln accordance with my invention, the safe bottom l or a safe wall ora portion of the bottom or wall is of grill-like construction and provided with vent openings 2 of suitable size, shape and number.- These openings are :tilled with plugs 3 of asbestos or any other suitable hre-proof material and an outer lining l of asbestos or other fire-proof material is also provided and which in- Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented July 3, 191'?.
Serial No. 125,054.
creasesthe thickness of the bottom or wall. An outer covering 5 of thin steel is also provided and which is preferably in sections and is here shown as attached to the bottoni or wall by means of screws 6 which enga-ge in the steel grill. Any suitable means may, within the scope of my invention, be employed for securing the outer covering in place.
Should an attempt be made to blow out the door of the safe by nitroglycerin or other explosive, the explosion instead of blowing out the door will blow the plugs and the outer lining and coating from the bottom or wall or a portion thereof, thus affording escape for the gases and preventing the safe from being seriously injured.
In the modified construction shown in Fig. 3, the openings are filled with plugs 7 of steel and which are held in place by the outer tire-proof lining 8, the outer steel covering being indicated in this figure at 9.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
l. ln a safe, a bottom or wall provided with vent openings, plugs in and closing said openings, and an outer lining holding said plugs in place and permitting the blowing out of the plugs by explosion.
Q. In a safe, a bottom or wall provided with vent openings, plugs in and closing said openings, a fire proof outer lining holding said plugs in place and permitting the blowing out of the plugs by explosion, and an outer covering on the fire proof lining.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
CARL D. KENYON.
