APPARATUS FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF TIN, TEE/NE, AND THE LIKE PLATES.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I)ANIEL Ronnn'r JAMES, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and resident of Morriston, county of Glamorgan, ales, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for the Manufacture of Tin, Terne, and the Like Plates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in the manufacture of iron, steel, copper and other metal plates, the object being to coat only one side of the plate with tin, terne, or other metal or alloy.
Hitherto the plates have been passed (in the many systems now in use) entirely immersed in the metal bath in the tinning pot or the like, over guides and between rollers, and finally withdrawn through surfaceoqualizing rollsand rolls rotating in palm oil, resin, grease or other flux which imparts the desired finish, and it has been impossible to form or manufacture a plate coated on one side only.
Accordingly, it will be apparent that a primary object of my invention is to coat a metal plate on one side only, with a suitable.
metallic alloy or the like, the same entirely covering or coating one side of the sheet, leaving the other side of the plate in its natural state. To this end, I employ a novel and practical arrangement of devices whereby this object may be successfully and commercially attained, as will hereinafter more fully appear.
A preferred and practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my improved apparatus for carrying out the ob jects set forth. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing amodified construction for attaining the same end.
Similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the drawings.
In carrying out the invention, reference being had to Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings, a series of horizontal rolls a of steel or other metal as ordinarily employed are mounted in a horizontally arranged pot 6. These rolls a are immersed for only part of their depth, say, to their centers, or more or less, in the bath of metal 0 contained in the pot. The said rolls a co-act each with Specification of Letters Patent.

' that the same are mounted so as to slide in the vertical guides X shown in the drawings. so that the rolls (Z always contact with the lower rolls a until a plate 7 passes between them. Since the said rolls are of glass or stone, to which the metal will not adhere, they will not pick up by transference from the lower rolls a any molten metal, and consequently cannot transfer metal to the other side of the plate. This is also true of the rolls h and 2' hereinafter more fully referred to.
Now, in action, the plates 6 are passed down the guide f through the grease or other oily flux to between the first pair of rolls, the lower of which applies the tin, terne, or other metal or alloy to the underside of the plate, viz. :-the side contacting with the steel roll (rotating partly in the metal or alloy). This side of the plate receives a metal coating, the upper rolls having no metal adhering thereto; the plate then-co passes through the succeeding pair of rolls to the guide 9 which conveys said plate be fore it leaves the pot to the lower pair of a set of rolls 72, and t which carry the plate vertically out of the pot. Of these rolls,the rolls h are of steel or the like, while the rolls a are of a material to which the metal or alloy will not adhere, the rolls h rotating in a trough j containing metal, giving a final coating to the plate, said rolls and trough being immersed in the grease, oil or the like.
The rolls are geared together and driven in any suitable manner, and, if desired, to save grease or the like, the upper part of the pot may be occupied by a box shown in dot and dash lines.
Referring now to the modification of apparatus shown in Fig. 2 and which enables at one and the same time two metal plates to be coated and on one side only instead of coating a single metal plate on one side only, thus doubling the output of the apparatus:
The embossed glass, granite or rolls (Z and i of a material to which the metal will not adhere, as set forth with reference to Fig. 1, are replaced in the present arrangement by steel or other metal rolls a, h in order that each of the opposing rolls may transfer tin or other metal or alloy 0 to the surface of the plates passing therebetween, suitable guides Z2 being provided to guide a the plates in their passage to and through V the outer surfaces of the two plates passing normally between said rolls. The plates are then carried through. a second or it may be more pairs of rolls it, h which are fed with metal from their troughs j till the plates leave the last pair of tinning rolls, thus coating two plates at the same time and on one side only.
Having now described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A machine for coating metal plates on one side only comprising, a potv adapted to contain an oily flux and molten bath therein, a series of pairs of rolls horizontally disposed in the lower part of the pot, the lower roll of each pair having its coating periphery located above the molten bath level, the upper andlower rolls of each of said pairs being of a length corresponding to the width of the plates to be coated, and contacting throughout their length, a feed guide leading from the top of the pot to the first pair of said rolls, another guide for delivering the plates from the last pair of saidrolls, and a series of paired rolls arranged at the end of said last mentioned guide for delivering the plate and having means for applying a finishing coat thereto.
2. A machine for coating metal plates on one side only, comprising a pot adapted to contain an oily flux and molten bath, a series of pairs of rolls horizontally disposed in the lower part of the pot, an inclined and curved feed guide leading from the top of the pot to the first pair of the series of pairs of rolls, and a second and upwardly curved guide to receive the plate or plates'from the last pair of the series of rolls, the upper roll of each pair of rolls being of a material which does not pick up the coating material,
while the lower roll of each pair of rolls is of a material adapted to pick up the coating material and transfer the same to the plate.
3. A machine for coating metal plates on one side only, comprising a pot adapted to contain an oily flux and molten bath, a series of pairs of rolls horizontally disposed in the lower part of the pot, an inclined and curved feed guideleading from the top of the pot to the first pair of the series of pairs of rolls, and a second and upwardly curved guide to receive the plate or plates from the last pair of the series of pairs of rolls, the upper roll of each pair of rolls being of a material which does not pick up the coating material, while the lower roll of each pair of rolls is of a material adapted to pick up the coating material and transfer the same to the plate, a pair of horizontally disposed finishing rolls located above the second guide, troughs adapted to contain metal located below the outer roll of the pair of finishing rolls and into which troughs said outer rolls which are of a material adapted to pick up the metal, dip and transfer the metal to the plate, said finishing rolls carrying the plate vertically out of the pot.
