Be it known that we, DANIEL 1min-inns, tin-plate manufacturer, RICHARD LEWIS, tore man, and PHILIP JONES, mechanic, subjects of the Queen of Great Britain, all residing at theDyffryn Iron andTin-Plate lVorks, Morriston, Swansea, England, `jointly have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Coating Metal Plates with Tin or other Metal, (for which we have received Letters Patent in Great Britain, No. 7,139, dated May 16, 1887, and in Spain, No. 8,327, dated September l5, 1888,)-oi' which the following is a specification. Y 4 Y -'In the 'specification ot' a former United States patent granted to us, No. 381,226, dated April 17, 18.88, we described means wherebyV with a linning-pot We were able to allow. each plate which was to be coatedto dwell at rest for a time in the melted coating metal and yet to carry'on the coating continuously and uniformly. We also described using with such apparatus a dipping-pot containing finishing coating metal, the plates being introduced into such dipping-pot by hand after coming from the tinning-pot. According to our present invention We use a tinning-pot constructed as described in our former patent; but in place of using in conjunction therewith a dipping-pot into which the plates have to be introduced by hand we so arrange the apparatus that the plates are passed without handling from the grease or flux bath at the exit end of the tinning-pot to and through a secondary tinning-pot, the pair or pairs of rollers in which pot lare completelyirnmersed in coating metal at a lower temperature, preferably, than that in the first pot, and then the plates are caused to rise up from such second pot through linx or grease contained in a bath above it.

The drawing hereunto annexed is a longitudinal section of apparatus constructed in. thenianner we prefer for carrying ont our invention.

So far the apparatus is the same as is described in the specification ot our former patent, except that the two pairs of rolls D, instead ot being, as before, placed nearly rertically one pair above the other, are now in a more inclined position. As the plates emerge from'between the upper pair of rolls, they pass below carved guide-bars E, which bend thein downward and conduct them to the nip of pair ot rolls F, which are conipletelyiininersed in melted coating metal contained in the dipping or finishing pot, G. lt is necessary that the rolls F should be entirely iniinerscd in 'the melted metal; .otherwise scrul or dross7 oating on the surface of. the metal kwill tend toad-here to the rolls, and then all. plates as they pass between the rolls will be marked by the patches of scruii or dross which are on the plates, and imperfect worl; result. As the plates pass from the rolls l1",t"ney come against curved guide-bars ll, which bend them again upward and lead them to the lowest pair of rolls l, by which `the plates are carried upward through grease or linx contained in a grease pot K", which rests upon .the top of the pot G. Preferably the lowestpairot rolls l' are made to dip into the melted metal.

We are aware that it is old to feed single plates through fluxing and coat-ing baths between rollers immersed therein, and do not2 thereollia bijoadlyzclaini so doing.
Having thus Inlly' described thecrganicaf! tion and operation of our improved apparatus for coating metal plates with tin or other metals, what we claim therein as new and of our own invention is 1. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of a tinning-pot', a rack of parallel guide-bars iixed therein adapted simultaneously to hold several plates side by sideand subject to the action of the coating metal, a uX-boX above the tinning-pot, two or more pairs of withdrawing-rolls in the fluxboX, a dipping or finishing pot, feed-rolls coin- Y pletely immersed therein, and continuous arched guide-bars extending from just above' the withdrawing-rolls to just above the feedrolls and adapted to conduct the plates din reetly from the one to the other.
2. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of a tinning-pot, a rack of a flux-box above thelnishingpot, a second pair of rollers in said pot, a guide in the nisl1- ing-pot adapted to conduct the plates from one-pair of rolls to the other, both the guide and 'rolls being beneath the normal surface of the metal melted in the pot, and two or more pairs of rolls in the seoond flux-box, (arranged one pair oven the other beneath the level of the luX`,) between which rollers the coated plates pass.
