Abstract
8826. James, D. R. April 7. Coating.-Iron, steel, copper, and other metal plates are coated on one side only with tin, terne, or other metal or alloy by passing them between pairs of rolls, one roll a of each pair being of steel or other material which picks up the molten coating - metal and applies it to the plate, and the other roll d of each pair being of china, glass, marble, granite, or other stone or material to which the coating-metal does not adhere. The lower rolls a are immersed for part of their depth only in the molten metal, and the upper rolls d are wholly immersed in palm oil, resin, or other flux. The plates pass out of the pot b through finishing-rolls h, i, one roll h of each pair being of steel &c. and rotating in troughs containing coating-metal, and the other roll i of each pair being of material to which the coating-metal does not adhere. To economize flux, the upper part of the pot may be occupied by a box, as shown in dotted lines.
