IMPROVEMENT IN DRILLING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,950, dated September 12, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE KOCH, of Cass, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improveinentin Drillin g-Machin es; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specication, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of opposite side of the saine.
This invention has relation to the improvement of machines for drilling oil and other wells; and consists in the application to the band-wheel of a pair of ratchet-wheels, with suitable springpawls located on the band-wheel, the object in view being to allow the drill to fall and strike from the force of gravity alone, thereby securing a harder blow than is obtained where the drill is made to drop by the aid of a stili' crankthe ordinary process of drilling.
In the accompanying drawing, illustrating this invention, A represents a band-wheel loosely hung on the transverse sha-ft B, which is supported by standards C. D is the beam, oscillating on the top of the post D, supporting a drill, E, which is hung to its forward end, and connected with the shaft B by connecting-rod E and crank E. F F designate ratchet-wheels, which are keyed to the shaft B on opposite sides of the band-wheel. G G represents pawl, and G G' springs seciued to the faces of the band-wheel. H shows orifices through the ratchet and band- Wheels.
This machine operates as follows: As thebandwheel revolves toward the drill end of the machine the pawls engage with the ratchet-wheels and rotate the shaft until the drill is raised to its highest point, whereupon it falls of its own gravity, and independently of the revolution of the band-wheel. A stift' crank motion may be substituted for the one described by inserting a pin through the orifices H, thereby establishing a connection to operate the drill in both directions.
This invention is especially applica-ble to the drilling of artesian wells with cable tools.
Having described my invention, I claim- Ina drilling machine, the combination, with the walkin g-beam D and its connecting ropes or rods, of the loose pulley A, provided with pawls GG, the shaft B, with its perforated ratchet-wheels F F, and crank E, all constructed and operating substantially as specified.
