Description

waited @States @met @Mira JAOOE PETERS, OF LEBANON, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO SIMON J.
STINE, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No.' 111,472, dated January 31, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT lN-BORINGI AND MO-RTISING-MACHINES.
. The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of thesame.
`To all whom 'it may concern.:
the chisel applied for mortising, and' Figure 2 is a detached view of partei` the shaft with the drill applied.
From the standard A project the brackets B B', the
'latter of which is slotted at b',, and within the said slot is pivoted thclink or yoke C, to which is pivoted the lever D.
To the lever D is pivoted the sleeveor collar E, in which the shaft F revolves. g
The bearing Gr of the crank-shaft 1I is cast in` one piece with or otherwise conveniently attached to the Vcellar E and the'cllar I, in which latter the' crankshaft revolves.
` Below the colla-r E is a ring, J, on the shaft E, which prevents the shaft from rising in the said collar; and
"it is prevented from falling in this collar by the collar .It on the bevel-gear K, which is keyed or otherwise fastened to the shaft, so that the. shaft F is free t-o re- `volve in the collar E; and vertical motion is given to it by elevating or depressing the said collar by means of the lever D.
'lhe brackets B B', through which the shaft passes,
act as guides, within which it may be elevated or depressed; andthe standardA is slotted at a, to permit the motion of the lever.
To the crank-shaft H are attached the driving bevelgear L and the crank M.
On the crank is a sliding,lr catch, N, which may engagewith ,either of the notches o oin the plate O on the collar I. v .l v
Then the machine isjtobe used for mortising, the chisel is attachedtothe'shaft F and the catch N is "made to engage with the notch o, as shown in fig. 1. The shaft being thusprevented from turning' in they eollarE, the chisel is operated by alternately elevating and depressing the lever D. \Vhcnit is desired to reverse the actionof the chisel, thc catch is disengaged from the notcho, the crank turned halfway round, and the catch made to engage with the notch o', by which operationthe chisel is turned half roundand retained in that position.
' When the machine is -to be used for drilling metal i or other hard substances, thedrill is attached to the' shaft, asfshovv'n in fig. 2, and the c'atch disengaged from the plateO.' The drill is then revolved by turning the crank, and the requisite pressure given by bear@ ing on the long arm offlthe le'ver D.
What I claim' as luy-invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is- A The combi-nation of; the leverY D, collar E, shaft F, and link C, when all these parts are constructed and operate as described.
