IMPROVEMENT IN FEEDING AND TURNING DE-VICES FOR ROCK-DRILLS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,818, dated July 11, 1876; application filed March 16, 1876.

have invented certain new and useful'Improvements in Feeding and Turning Devices for Rock-Drills; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification.
The invention consists in certain novel combinations of mechanism designed to be operated by hand, for feeding the drill without rotating it, to bring it up to and withdraw it from the work, as required; for rota-ting the drill without feeding it, as frequently necessary, when starting the hole, or when truing, or making fair the latter, and when workin g in a hard spot 5 also for feeding and rotating the drill at the saine time, as in the regular operation of the drill.
My-invention provides for effecting these several operations or changes in a most simple, rapid, and efficient manner.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 Arepresents a longitudinal section of the rear end of a rock-drill-that is, the end opposite to that through which the drill works-with my improved drill-controlling mechanism attached. Fig. 2 is a sectional end view on the line a' of the same.
A is the drill-cylinder, and B its rear head or cover. AO is the working-piston of the drill, and D the turning device, which rotates the latter. `E is the screw, by which the machine or drill generally is brought up to and withdrawn from its work, as required. G is an outer fixed bearing or support, alike for the Y externally protruding portion of the spindle which carries the drill-turning device D, and for a rotating and longitudinally sliding shaft or sleeve H, which Ylits at its inner end over a steadying-stud, I, attached to the head B of the cylinder. The outer end of the shaft H has attached to it an operating crank or handle, J. Fast on the eXternally-protrudin g port-ion of the spindle of the turning device D are two pinions, K K', arranged at a sufficient distance apart to allow of the free rotation between them of a pinion, L, fast on the inner end of the shaft H. This pinion is made capable of gearing with either of the pinions K K', accordingly as the shaft H is adjusted longitudinally in or out for the purpose. Said pinion L also -gears with a broad-faced pinion, M, on the drill-feeding screw E, when the shaft H is adjusted, so that its pinion L is either in gear with the pinion K, or is arranged to rotate between both pinions K K', but when the shaft H is still farther adjusted to put the pinion L in gear with the pinion K', then the pinion L is out ofgear with the pinion M.
These several longitudinal adjustments of the rotating shaft H may be determined nd regulated by means of a spring or other catch, N, fast on the support G, and made to lock with one or other of a series of annular grooved portions, a b c, of the shaft H, according to the adjustment of the shaft.
When the shaft H is adjusted, as represented in the drawing, then, on 'turning the crank J, the machine will merely be brought up to or withdrawn from its Work according to the direction in which the crank J is turned, inasmuch as the pinion L is then only in gear with the pinion M of the feeding-screw E.
By lifting the catch N out of lock with the recessed or grooved portion b of the shaft H, and sliding the latter inward till the catch N enters its grooved portion a., then the pinion L will be put into gear with the pinion K ofthe drill-turning device D, as well as with the pinion M of the feeding-screw E, thus providing, on turning the handle J in the required v direction, both for feeding and rotating the drill. Y
Again, by lifting the catch N out of lock with the grooved portion a of the shaft H, and sliding the latter to its fullest extent outward, or until the catch N enters the grooved portion c of the shaft H, then the pinion L will be shifted out of gear with both the pinions K and M, and will be put"into gear with the pinion K' only, thereby providing, on turning the handle J, for simply rotating the drill.
