Description
OTIS W. SEVEBNS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
momma-wax PAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 4, 1916.
Application filed September 2, 1914. Serial No. 859,794.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTIs W. SnvnRNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Wax Pads, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cleaning and waxing pads for sad-irons, and to a process for producing the same.
An important object of the invention is to provide a pad of the above mentioned character, which is tough and not readily breakable, inexpensive to manufacture, and will properly clean and wax the sad-iron.
A further object of the invention is to provide a process for producing the above described article, in an expeditious and economical manner.
Other objects and advantages of the in vention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In one form of the invention, I provide a pad embodying, a fibrous body portion, formed preferably of felt, which is satu rated or impregnated with wax, preferably bees wax, and a finely divided mineral material, such as finely divided or powdered emery stone. To produce this pad, the wax, preferably bees wax, is heated whereby the same is converted into a liquid or plastic, and to this liquid or plastic wax is added a small quantity of finely divided or powdered emery stone, the mass being thoroughly stirred until it becomes homogeneous. The fibrous material, such as felt, constituting the body portion of the pad, is dipped or immersed in this mixture until it becomes thoroughly saturated or impregnated with the same. The ironing pad thus produced, will be found to thoroughly clean the iron, besides waxing the same, the cleansing process being due principally to the presence of the finely divided mineral material, such as powdered emery stone, which by being thoroughly mixed with the wax, is suspended in the fibrous body por- A second and preferred form of the invention consists of an ironing pad embodying the fibrous body portion, preferably formed of felt, the same being saturated or impregnated with salt and wax, preferably bees wax. In the production of this form of the invention, the felt is first dipped or immersed in a suitably strong solution of salt in water, whereby it becomes saturated or impregnated with the same, subsequent to which the felt thus treated is allowed to thoroughly dry. After the felt has become dry it is then immersed in the heated liquid or plastic wax, preferably bees wax, the felt thus previously treated becoming thoroughly saturated or impregnated with the wax. In this pad the mineral material, the salt, thoroughly impregnates the felt and is exposed for engagement with the surface of the iron to clean the same. Salt is an excellent cleaner for sad-irons.
It is to be understood that the forms of my invention herewith shown and described are to be taken as preferred examples of the same, and that various changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A sad-iron pad, comprising a body portion composed of felt which is first soaked in a salt solution, dried, then saturated with molten wax, and allowed to cool.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses OTIS W. SEVERNS.
