LEWIS E. VAN EVERY, 0F HAMPTON,-IOWA.
GATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July t, 1916.
Application filed January 18, 1916. Serial No. 72,702.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEWIS E. VAN EVERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hampton, in the county of Franklin and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to farm gates, and has particular reference to new and useful improvements in compound gates, wherein one or more supplemental gates are embraced in a singlerelatively large main gate.
An object of my invention is to construct a farm gate of the class described which is simple in construction and cheap to manufacture, yet strong and'durable, the function of the gate being that of restraining certain classes of live stock and permitting others to pass through the gate.
Other objects and advantages will appear from the following detail description and the claims, taken with an inspection of the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a farm gate embodying the improvements of my invention, Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a similar view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings in which similar reference characters connected by angle nipples 8. An intermediate rail 9 is provided mounted at one end in a T-nipple 10 carried by the end column 7. An intermediate column 11 is provided supporting intermediate its length the free end of the rail 9, connection being had by' means of a T-nipple 12. The top rail 4 terminates at and is connected with the column 11 by a nipple 13, and the lower end of the said column is connected by means of 'a nipple 14 to the bottom rail 5. A second column 15 is provided adjacent to but spaced from the end column 6 and is connected to the bottom rail 3 by a T-nipple 16. A relatively short section or bar 17 connects the upper end of the end column 6 with the column 15 by nip- 20 is carried thereby, having its marginal I edges rolled about the bottom rail 5, columns 11 and 15, and'the bar 19 as indicated at 21 and shown to advantage in Fig. 2. A plurality of bolts 22 or the like pass through the roller portions 21 and the supporting elements to maintain the sheet 20 in position. This structure provides an openingin the frame through which the larger live stock may pass, the opening being closed by a gate comprising a. frame 23 hinged at 24 and carrying a wire mesh section 25 by suitable fasteners 25. This supplemental gate, while permitting the larger live stock to pass therethrough, will restrain the smaller stock such as hogs and the like from passing through at the same time, since the latter cannot step over the barrier bar 19. A suitable latch 26 may be provided to maintain the gate 23 closed. A second supple mental gate 27 is provided hinged as at 28' on a relatively short column 29 carried by and connected to the bottom and intermediate rails 5 and 9 respectively by T-nipples v 30. A wire mesh section 31 may be carried by the gate 27 by fasteners 31. A suitable latch means is provided which comprises a plurality of sets of alined brackets 32 and 33 carried by the rails 5 and 9 and the gate 2 7 respectively, a locking rod 34 being dropped through said brackets when alined I as shown to advantage in Figs. 1 and 3. At the upper end of the rod 34 a loop 35 is formed for an obvious purpose. The sup-J plemental gate, will, when open, permit the passage therethrough of smaller live stock,
such 'as hogs or sheep, but restrainsthe largerlive stock from passing through at the same time. 7
Between the top, bottom, and intermediate rails suitable wire mesh frame 36 may be carried by suitable hangers 37. A wire mesh frame 38 may. be mountedbetween the columns 6 and 15 and supported by suitable hinged to the post 2 by bolts or the like 40 and a latch 41 is provided for engagement with the post 1.
It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that by the provision of my improved gate certain classes of the live stock maybe hangers 39. The main gate frame may be r others restrained from so doing.
freed to pass through the gate and certain It is to be understood that the rails 4, 5, and 9 and the columns 6, 7, 11, 15 and 29 may be made up of pipe sections having oppositely threaded extremities to facilitate their connection with the nipples. This construction affords a strong and durable and non-flexing gate structure.
From the above description taken in con: nection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation 1 and advantages of my invention may be had,
and while I have shown and described my invention as embodying a specific structure, I desire that It be understood that I may make such changes on said structure as donot depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed. 7
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a gate, a frame formed of a plurality of pipe sections terminated to pro vide an inverted opening intermediate the ends of the frame, a hinged closure mounted in said opening, and a sheet metal per-' manent closure arranged therebeneath, said sheet metalv closure having the marginal edges thereof rolled about the adjacent pipe sections, said sheet metal closure forming means forpreventing traflic through the gates when the hinged closure is in closed position. I
2. In a gate,-,a frame composed of a plurality of pipe sections arranged in parallel horizontal relation, said horizontal pipe sections being terminated toform a U-shaped opening extending from the top of the gate to a point above the bottom thereof, an in termediate. pipe section forming said opening in combination with the other pipe section, a stationary closure arranged beneath said. opening and formed of a sheet of metal having the marginal edges permanently connected With the intermediate pipe section and the other adjacent pipe section, and a hinged closure mounted in said U-shaped opening, said permanent closure preventing traffic through the gate when the hinged closure is in closedposition.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature hereto. LEWIS E. VAN EVERY;
