To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEVI E. BIRKY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rantoul, in the county of Champaign and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This im'ention relates to certain improvements in gates and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character having means of a novel and improved character whereby the same may be readily and conveniently raised or lowered as the requirements of practice may necessitate and whereby it may be maintained in such adjusted positions.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim.

In order that my invention may be the better understood, 1 will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein is disclosed a view in side elevation of a gate constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention.

As illustrated in the accompanying drawings, 1 and 2 denote fence posts between which my improved gate is adapted to be hung, 1 indicating the post to which the gate is hingedly connected and 2 the post to which the gate is adapted to be latched, as will be hereinafter more particularly set forth. The post 1 is of greater height than the post 2 for reasons which are believed to be self-evident.

As herein disclosed, my improved gate comprises the longitudinal bars '33 and the connecting or end bars H, such longitudinal bars 3 being further connected at a predetermined point intermediate their length by an additional bar 5 disposed in parallelism with the end bars 4:4. Projecting beyond one end of the frame are the brackets 6 having in their free extremities suitable apertures through which'is adapted to be directed the elongated hinged bar 7 which is supported by the post 1 through the medium of the brackets 8, herein shown as three in number, equidistantly spaced, whereby it will be seen that the gate will be free to swing in either direction upon the bar 7 as a pivot. In order to reinforce the gate or especially the connection between the longitudinal bars 3 and the adjacent end bar 4, the brackets 6 are of such a length as to overlap the ends of the bar l and have their inner extremities suitably secured, as at 9, to the bars 3 while each of such brackets is provided with a foot or extension 10 adapted to overlie the outer face of the bar 4 and be suitably secured thereto, as at 11, whereby it will be seen that a convenient and effective means is provided for maintaining such end bar 4 and the longitudinal bars 3 in proper assembled relation and it will be further observed that the construction of the brackets, as herein set forth, is such as to prolong the life of the gate proper as the connection with such brackets is afforded upon an end bar in addition to the longitudinal bars whereby a means is presented which tends to prevent sagging or dropping ofthe gate.

In order to afford a proper connection be tween the opposite end bar 4 and the bars 3, I employ the irons or brackets 12 hearing snugly against the outer face of such end bar and bridging the ends thereof and overlapping the adjacent end portion of the bars 33, suitable anchoring means for such irons 0r brackets being passed therethrough and through the bars 3 and 4-, as indicated at 14.

Extending upwardly from the upper bar 3 and adjacent the opposite ends thereof are the brackets 15, herein shown as substantially L-shaped in form, having their foot portions suitably engaged by the retaining means 16 in proper engagement with such bar 3, one of such brackets 15 being rested upon an upper hinged bracket 6 and its clamping means constituting a part of the retaining means for such bracket 6. The upper or free extremities of the brackets 15 are provided with suitable openings through which is adapted to be passed the shank 17 of an eye member 18, such eye members having secured thereto the extremities of a flexible member 20 preferably of heavy wire while the outer or free extremities of the shanks 17 have in threaded engagement therewith the clamping members 21 adapted to abut or contact with such brackets in order to impose the proper tension upon the flexible member and thereby affording a truss to further serve to prevent the gate from sagging.

My improved gate is particularly adapted for use upon farms and in order to afford a means to prevent the perching of birds upon such member 20 and to keep the stock from crowding over the gate, I provide such member 20 with the barbs 22. In order to further assure the gate from sagging, I interpose between the bars 3-3, the brace rods 28. r

In order that the gate may be raised so that it may be swung free of any accumulated mud or depth of snow or to permit the passage beneath the gate of fowls or small stock, it will be readily perceived that the gate may be adjustedlengthwise of the hinged bar 7 and in order to maintain the gate in such adjusted position, I have loosely mounted upon the bar 7, beneath the lowermost bracket 6, the sleeve 24 to which is suitably anchored a flexible member 25 preferably in the nature of a linked chain which is adapted to cooperate with the hook members 27 positioned at predetermined points upon the post 1 and whereby, as is believed to be clearly apparent, the gate may be effectually held in its various adlj)ustezd positions lengthwise of the hinged From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a gate constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly Well Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be adjusted vertically and whereby it may be effectively maintained in such adjusted position and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown, in carrying out my invention in practice.

Having thus fully described my invention what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination with a post having a vertical hinge bar carried thereby, of a gate comprising horizontal members and vertical. members, an angular bracket overlying and operatively connecting adjacent extremities of said horizontal and vertical members, certain of said brackets being provided with horizontally disposed perforate extensions integrally formed therewith and through which the hinge bar is adapted to be directed, a sleeve loosely mounted on the hinge bar below the perforate extension of the lowermost bracket, a linked member 0011- nected with the sleeve, and vertically spaced hook members carried by the adjacent face of the post and with which the linked member is adapted to be adjustably connected.
