JOAQUIN A. LOPEZ, OF BANES, CUBA.
DETACHA-BLE HANDLE FOR GRIPS.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented June 27, 1916.
Application filed Apri124,1915. serial No. 23,779.
T0 all 107mm t may concern Be it known that I, JOAQUIN A. LOPEZ., a citizen of the United States, residing at Banes, in the Province of Oriente, Republic of Cuba, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Handles for Grips; and I d0 hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to detachable handles for grips, traveling bags and the like.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of an improved handle for grips and the like which can be readily attached to and detached from same and which will be simple in construction, durable and relatively cheap to manufacture.
With the above and other objects, in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying` drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the improved handle attached to a grip. Fig. 2, a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, a perspective view of the arms of the handle with the various parts removed therefrom, and Fig. 4, a perspective view of the device for effecting adjustment of the free ends of the arms of the-handle toward and away from each other.
Referring to the drawing the improved handle is shown as comprising substantially U-shaped arms A and B which are formed from a single length of material suitably bent. Each. of the arms A and B includes legs 10 and a leg connecting portion 11. The intermediate portion of each leg connecting portion is o'set to form terminal extensions 12. At the point of junction of the arms A and B the material from which they are Constructed is bent to form alined eyes 13. A hand grip 14 has its terminal portions engaged in the eyes 13. Engaged on corresponding legs 10 of the arms A and B are tapering slides 15 which are mutually connected by a bar 16. By moving the slides 15 away from the junction of the arms A and 'it will be obvious that the free ends of said arms will be moved toward each other. On the other hand if the slides 15 are moved toward the junction of the arms A and B through the medium of the bar 16 it will be apparent that the free ends of the arms A and B will move away from each other as a result of the resiliency of the material ofwhich they are constructed.
The improved handle further embodies plates C and B which are secured directly to the grip, the latter being indicated at 17. I
Each of the plates C and D are provided with hook portions 18 and 19, said portions of one plate being disposed oppositely to the hook portions of the other plate.
In applying the handle tothe grip the slides 15 are moved toward the ljunction of the arms A and B and the free ends of said arms positioned in embracing relation to the hook portions 18 and 19 of the plates C and D. The slides 15 are then moved away from the junction of the arms A and B with the result that the extensions 12 are moved into interlocking relation with the hook por- -tions 18 and 19 of the plates C and D respectivelv and the handle is thus detachably secured to the grip as will be obvious.
What is claimed is 1. The combination of hook elements adapted to be attached to a grip or the like, said elements being disposed oppositely to each other, a handle including mutually connected arms, means for moving the free ends of said arms toward each other and into interlocking relation with .the hook elements, and a handle grip having its terminals-secured to the junction of said arms.
2. The combination of hook elements, adapted to be attached to a grip or the like, said elements being disposed oppositely to each other, a handle formed from a single length of material and including a 'pair of substantially U-shaped arms mutually connected at the free ends of their legs, taper- In testimony whereof, I ailiX my signaing slides mounted on corresponding legs ture, in the presence of tWo Witnesses. of the arms and adapted When moved in one 1 direction to force the free ends of the arms JOAQUN A LOPEZ' 5 into interlocking relation with respective Witnesses:
hook elements7 and a hand grip secured to C. H. FETERUVEGA, the handle at the junction of said arms. J. M. BETANCOURT.
