VEHICLE-NUMBEB-PLA'IE SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 20, 1916. I
Application filed October 31, 1913. SerialNo. 798,386.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN M. RosnN- BLUTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Vehicle-Number-Plate Supports, whereof the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to brackets of the class described in Letters Patent of the United States #883,97 3 granted to me April 7 1908, including means arranged to support a lamp in detachable relation to a motor vehicle and means whereby a license number plate may be detachably supported in such relation to said lamp 'as to be illuminated by the latter.
The bracket shown in said Letters Patent includes duplicate pivotal supporting means for the license number plate and it is necessary to fasten and unfasten both of them to remove and replace the number plate thereon. Moreover, such brackets having gone into extensive practical use, it was found that the construction and arrangement shown in said Letters Patent permitted a license number plate to be adjusted so'far toward the lampsupport of the bracket as to conceal the initial figure of the license number behind the flaring front of the lamp, thus permitting unscrupulous automobilists to conceal their identity, while ostensibly complying with the law as to the illumination of their identifying license numbers.
Therefore, it is an object of my present.
invention to provide a bracket so constructed and arranged that a license number plate may be secured thereon by single pivotal securing means so as to minimize the amount of manipulation necessary to change the number plates upon such a support, and, further, to provide such a support with means preventing the adjustment of a license number plate toward the lamp support to such an extent as to permit the concealment of any portion of the license number behind thelamp structure.
Moreover. it is an object of my invention to so simplify the construction and arrangement of such a bracket as to lessen the cost of manufacture thereof ascompared with the bracket disclosed in said Letters Patent. My invention includes the various novel features of construction and arrangement,
hereinafter more definitely specified.-
In the drawings; Figure I is a plan view of a bracket conveniently embodying my in vention, with a license number plate adusted thereon .in cooperative position. Fig. II is a front elevation of said bracket. Fig. III is a plan view of a bracket embodying a modified form of my invention. Fig. IV is aifront elevation of the bracket shown in Fig. III. Fig. V is a plan view of a bracket embodying a modified form of my invention wherein the license number plate is secured tothe bracket by connecting means extending through slots at the bottom of said plate; such bracket plates being issued by some States, as distinguished from the number plates issued by other States, having slots at the top thereof as indicated in the preceding figures. Fig. VI is a front elevation of the bracket and'number plate shown in Fig. V. Fig. VII is a plan view of a bracket embodying a modified form of my invention, including means for holding a'lamp by engagement with a horizontally extending member thereof, as distinguished from the preceding forms of my invention wherein p the lamp is supported by a vertically extending standard. Fig. VIIIis a front elevation of the; bracket, lamp, and plate, shown in Fig. VII. Fig. IX is a plan view of a bracket embodying a modified form of my invention, including a supporting base plate" adapted to be directly connected with the vehicle body as distinguished from the base plates in the preceding forms of my invention whichhave means for engagement with the two forms of fixtures with'which autoe mobiles, are ordinarily provided, to wit, either a fixture having a vertically extending standard ofcircular cross section; or a vertically extending standard of substantially flat wedge shape. Fig. X is a front elevation of the bracket shown in Fig. IX. Fig. XI is a left hand end elevation of a bracket embodying a modified form of my invention, having a license number plate connected therewith. Fig. XII 'is a front elevation of the bracket and number plate shown in Fig. XI. 1
In Figs. I and II I have shown a bracket 28 having the base socket 29 at the lower portion thereof and the lamp holding member 30 projecting upwardly at one end of said base; the number plate holder including the vertical frame plate 31 extending upwardly from the I opposite end of said base; said bracket having the stop member 32 projecting forwardly from said frame plate 31 to engage two transversely related edges of the number plate 34: which is pro vided with attaching means such as de scribed with reference to the number plate 1.
In Figs. III and IV I have shown a modified form of my invention including the bracket 36 which difiers from the bracket 28 shown in Figs. I and II in that the holder for the number plate 37 which includes the stop member 38 is supported at a greater distance from the base to to comply with a specific legal requirement as to the distance of the number plate from the lamp, and in this form ofmy invention Ifind it convenient to-provide the bracket with the brace arm 4-1. v
In Figs. V and VI I have shown a modified form of bracket 63, which differs from those above described in that the number plate 6 1 is secured thereon by connecting means ex-.
tending through a slot 65 at the bottom of said plate. Said bracket 63 has the base socket 67 at the lower portion thereof, the
lamp holding member 68 projecting upwardly at one end of said base, and a number plate holder including the vertical frame plate 69 extending from the opposite end of said base. Said bracket 63 has the stop member 70 projecting forwardly from said frame plate 69 to engage the edge of the number plate 64 which is otherwise constructed and equipped with connecting means like the plates above described, including the bolt 71 having the head 72 and nut 73. Said bolt 71 extends through the slot 74: in said frame plate 69 having the enlargement 75 at the end thereof remote from said base 67, and it is to be understood that even when said nut73 is loosened sufficiently topermit the number plate 64 to slip toward the left hand in Figs. V and VI, it is impossible for the bolt head 72 to be thus accidentally presented in registry with'the slot enlargement 75, and thus permit its escape, because the projection 77 on said bracket 63 adjoining said slot 741 is encountered by said head 72; so that it is necessary to unscrew the nut 73 to the extent of said projection 77 in order to bring said head in registry with said enlargement 75.
It is to be understood that the means last above described, including the projection 77 for preventing accidental registration of the number plate attaching bolt head with the enlargement at the end of the'slot in the plate holder may be used in each form of my invention herein described.
In Figs. VII and VIII I have shown'a modified form of bracket 80 including means for holding a lamp by engagement with a horizontally extending member thereof, as distinguished from the preceding forms of my invention wherein the lamp is supported by a vertically extending standard. Said bracket 80 has the base plate 81 forming a socket having the recess 82 opening at the front of said bracket and slots 83 and 8 1, in vertical alinement, respectively at the top and bottom thereof, and having means arranged to clamp a support fitting in said slots, including the set screw 86 which is adjustable in a threaded opening in said socket; whereby said bracket may be detachably secured in rigid relation with a vehicle. Said bracket 80 has a lamp holding member, at one end of said base 81, including the horizontal socket 87 for the circular tubular shank 88 of the lamp casing 89 inclosing the incandescent electric lamp 90 which is fitted in the tubular lamp socket 91 in engagement with the plug 92 so that said lamp is electrically connected with the conductors 93 and 9a. Said lamp holder is provided with lamp clamping means including the split resilient band 96, encircling said shank 88, and having the bolt 97 extending-through the ends of said band; said bolt having the slotted head 98 whereby it may be rotated in engagement with the nut 99 which has its tangential edge 100 engaging said band, preventing rotation of said nut. Said bracket 80 comprises a plate holder including the vertical frame plate 102 having the horizontal slot 103 with the. enlargement 104. at its end remote from said base 81. Said bracket has the forwardly projecting lugs 106 and 107 extending approximately parallel with said frame plate 102 and everhanging the number plate 108, which is constructed and arranged like the number plate 1 above described; having the slot 109 for the belt 110 which is adjustable axially and laterally therein and has the head 111 wider than said slot 103, and the nut 112. Said bolt 110 carries the plane washer 11 1 which bears upon the face of said plate 108, and the fiexible'resilientelement 115, which is a metal spring rendering the connection flexible, for the purpose above described. As above contemplated said bracket 80 is provided with the projection 117 to prevent the accidental registration of the bolt head 111 with said slot enlargement 10 1.
It is to be noted that the construction and arrangement of the lamp casing shown in Figs. VII and VIII inclusive, is claimed in my application (11813) Serial No. 799,106, filed November 4, 1913 for Letters Patent ofthe .United States.
In Figs. IX and X, I have shown a bracket 125 embodying a modified form of my invention including a supporting base plate 126 adapted to be directly connected with the vehicle body, through the bolt holes 127, as distinguished from the base plates in the preceding forms of my invention which have means for engagement with the two forms of fixtures with which automobiles are ordinarily provided, as above described.
Although each of the above described forms of my invention is adapted to support a lamp and number plate in cooperative relation, it is to be'understood that certain features of my invention may be embodied in brackets which are independent of the lamp supporting means,'for instance, I have shown in Figs. XI and X11 a bracket 130 comprising a plate holder including the vertically extending frame plate 131 having the slot 132 with the enlargement 133 at one end thereof and the projection 13 1 preventing accidental escape of the bolt head.
-Said bracket 130 has the forwardly projecting lugs 135 and 136 overhanging the license number plate 137, which is constructed and equipped with attaching means like the number plate 1 above described. Said bracket 130 has the stop 139 engaging said plate 137 and includes the base plate 140 forming a socket for the support 1&1 to which it is detachably secured by the clamping means including the yoke bar 142 connected to said bracket by the bolts 14-.3 hav ing the nuts 1 14. It may be observed that said bracket 130 above described has no stop limiting the adjustment of the number plate toward the lamp, other than the ends of the slots through which the attaching bolt extends.
I do not desire to limit myself to theprecise details of construction and arrangement 7 herein set forth, as it is obvious that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the essential features of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim 1. The combination with a vehicle license number plate having a slot; of a bolt, adjustable in said slot, having a head wider than said slot, a nut on said bolt, and a flexible resilient element between said head and nut; a lamp and number plate supporting bracket including a base whereby said bracket may be secured in rigid relation with a vehicle; a number plate holder carried by said base, including a vertical frame plate having a horizontal slot with one end nearer said base than the other and having an enlargement of its end remote from said base; said enlargement being larger than the head of said bolt; a projection on said bracket, normally preventing registration of said bolt head with said enlargement; forwardly projecting lugs on said frame plate, overlapping said number plate; and a stop member limiting the adjustment of said number plate toward said base, including a for-- wardly projecting ledge extending vertically and horizontally on said frame plate, forming an abutment for transversely re lated edges of said number plate.
