TRUE B. RICHARDSON, OF WICHITA, KANSAS.
ASPIRATING-SHOE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented une 20, 191a.
Application filed November 21, 1914. Serial No. 873,330.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TRUE B. RICHARDSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Aspirating-Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved aspirating shoe for use in connection with the first break rolls of a flour roller mill for the removal of an objectionable matter in the form of dark dust which is made by friction caused by the rubbing of the wheat berries against each other in passing from the last cleaner down through the spouts and stock hopper to the first-named break rolls; and also for the removal of dark dust made by abrasion of the outer coating of the wheat when the same is in contact with the corrugations of the roll at the point of the hip and also for the removal of dirt which is released from the crease in the wheat berry when opened bythe crushing action of the first-break rolls.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of an aspirating shoe constructed in accordance with my invention and showing the same arranged in operative relation to the first break rolls. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the same on a plane at right angles to that of Fig. 1.
For the purposes of this specification the first break rolls are indicated at 1. The housing 2 of said rolls is provided at its upper side with an opening 3 through which the wheat enters, a spout 4 being below the said opening and an inclined reciprocating shoe 5 being arranged below the spout, the shoe having a vertical wall 6 at the rear of the spout and being provided at its lower front discharge end with a plate 7 which is arranged above the first break roll.- This gate is suspended by springs 8 and in practice is reciprocated by any suitable means such for instance as a pitman 9 and a crank wheel 10. I would have it understood that the shoe may be suspended in any suitable manner and may be reciprocated by any suitable mechanism in accordance with my invention. At the lower end of the spout 4: on the front side thereof is a gate 11 which is hinged at its upper side as at 12, and is provided with a screw arm 13 on its front side and on which arm a weight 1 1 is adjustably mounted.
The spout forms in effect a stock hopper and the reciprocating shoe 5 feeds the wheat to the first break rolls, the gate 11 regulating the feed of the wheat to the rolls.
I also in accordance with my invention provide a suction duct 15 which is arranged immediately above the opposing surfaces of the first break rolls, extends from end to end of the said roll and is provided in its rear side with an opening 16 and with an inclined apron 17 at the lower side of said opening, said apron receiving the wheat as it is discharged from the reciprocating shoe and causing the wheat to passthrough the opening 16 and to dropdown through the suction duct and to be fed to the first break rolls. The said suction duct is provided at its lower end with diverging lips 15* and is made of sheet metal, such for instance as galvanized sheet iron and is formed at its vertical sides with flanges 18 having openings for the reception of screws or other like devices 19 which serve to secure the sides of the feeding duct to the side walls of the housing. The duct isprovided at its upper corners with nipples 20 to which pipes 21 are attached that lead to a suction fan 22 which discharges into a dust collector 23. The suction. through the suction duct 15 is regulated by dampers 24 in the pipe 21 and also by an opening 25 in the front wall of the housing, said opening controlling the fiow and volume of air which is allowed to enter the lower end of the suction duct above the opposing surfaces of the first break rolls. I
As the wheat berries are fed to the rolls and subjected to the crushing action thereof they are subjected to the action of a strong upwardly inclined current of air through the suction duct which serves to carry off the objectionable dirt or dark dust caused by the friction of the wheat berries in rubbing against each other when passing from the last cleaner down through the spouts and stock hopper and also caused by the abrasion of the outer coating of the wheat when the same is in contact with the corrugations of the rolls at the point of the nip, and also removes the dirt Which is released from creases of the wheat berries when opened by the crushing action of the rolls.
Having thus described my invention, I claim In an aspirating shoe, the combination of a pair of rolls, a vertical conduit provided at its lower end with converging lips disposed above the contact point of the rolls and each lip contacting with an adjacent r011 surface, said conduit and lips extending the full length of the rolls, a suction .15
pipe connected to the upper end of the conduit, and means to discharge grain into said Games of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Gommissioner of Patents, Washington. D. G.
