UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED o. BARBY, or GLEN BANNER, ALBERTA, CANADA.
BELLY-BAND.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 20, 1916.
Application filed January 22, 1916. Serial No. 73,751.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED O. BARBY, citizen of the United States of America, residing at Glen Banner, in the Province of Alberta and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Belly-Bands, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to belly bands for harness and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object-of the invention is to provide a band of the character indicated adapted to be connected with the billets of a harness saddle and formed in sections having rings adapted to be connected with the hooks of a plate which is positioned below the belly of the animal when the band is in place. The plate is also provided with a hook adapted to receive a ring at the end of the martingale, and all of the said hooks are provided with spring keepers for retaining the rings in position thereon.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of portions of the band. Fig. 2 is an under plan view of the plate thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the same.
The band includes strap sections 1 having at their outer ends buckles 2 adapted to be connected with the billets of a harness saddle in the usual manner. The strap sections 1 are provided at their inner ends with rings 3. A triangular plate 4 is used in conjunction with the strap sections 1, and the said plate is provided at each of its corners with an under-turned hook 5. Spring tongues or keepers 6 are joined together at their inner ends and connected with the intermediate portion of the plate 4 by means of a rivet 7, and the outer ends of the tongues lie against the inner sides of the bills of the hooks 5.
The rings 3 are adapted to engage in two of the hooks 5 at adjacent corners of the plate 4 and the martingale 8 of the harness is provided with a ring 9 which engages the other hook 5 of the plate 4.
When in position the strap sections 1 to.- gether with the plate 4 form a continuous band extending under the belly of the animal and they hold the plate 4 in proper copies a: this patent may be obtained tor position. Inasmuch as the ring 9 carried at the end of the martingale 8 is connected with the forward hooks of the plate 4, the rear end of the martingale 8 is held in proper position with relation to the band and cannot shift along the same as is the case where the martingale is provided with a loop which receives the intermediate portion of the bellyband.
The hooks 5 together with the keepers 6 constitute what is generally known as snap hooks, and in order to disengage the rings 3 and 9 therefrom, it is necessary to press the free ends of the tongues 6 toward the plate 4, whereby sufficient clearance is provided between'the free ends of the tongues and the bills of the hooks to permit the said rings to pass out of engagement with the hooks.
From the above description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing it will be seen that a band of simple and du-' rable structure is provided, and that the parts mutually cooperate with each other to maintain the band and the martingale in proper position withrelation to each other when applied to an animal.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1'. A band comprising strap sections, rings attached to the strap sections, a triangular plate provided at its three corners with hooks, keepers for the hooks, the strap sections being attached to two of said hooks by means of said rings, and a martingale arranged to be detachably connected with the other hook. I
2. A band comprising a triangular plate provided at its corners with hooks, a single member attached to the plate and having three tongues lying against the bills of the hooks, band sections having rings adapted to engage two of the hooks, and a martingale having a ring adapted to engage the other hook.
In testimony whereof I, A. O. 13., aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
