FEED MECHANISM FOR TICKET-PRINTING MACHINES.

Be it known that I, MARCUS O. ANTHONY, v
a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have in vented a certain new and useful Feed Mechanism for Ticket- Printing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a ticket printing machine, the object being to feed a ticket strip in the form of a roll or coil to the printing mechanism, and, further, to regulate at will the length of the successive portions of said strip which are positioned in the path of said printing mechanism.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of a ticket strip mechanism which feeds predetermined lengths of the strip successively in the path of a printing mechanism.
The invention embodies, also, means controllable at will for effecting a variation in the length of the strip portions which are brought successively into the path of the printing mechanism whereby tickets of varying lengths may be printed with the desired data, such as the cost mark, the selling price mark, the lot numbers, etc.
In a practical embodiment of the invention, a reel or spool is provided for holding a rolled ticket strip in position to be drawn or pulled across an impression bed, with which bed cooperates a movable printing head. The strip is moved relative to the impression bed by a feed mechanism which embodies a pair of cooperating rolls, one of which rolls is mounted loosely on an operating shaft. With such loose rolls cooperates a spring-controlled clutch and a brake or look in such manner that the roll is free to rotate in one direction with said shaft but is restrained by the brake from turning in a contrary direction, thus making provision for the feed of predetermined successive lengths of the ticket strip. Provision is made, also, for effecting a variation in the partial rotation of the loose drum, so that different lengths of the ticket strip may be drawn across the impression bed to produce tickets the length of which can be regulated as desired.
The invention may be embodied, also, in an automatic feed mechanism which is oper ated by the reciprocating movement of an impression bed, as will hereinafter appear.

illustrated different practical embodiments of the invention, but the constructions shown therein are to be understood as illustrative, only, and not as defining thelimits of the invention. v
Figure 1 is a plan view of a ticket print ing machine equipped with a feed mechanism of this invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, the dotted lines illustrating one position of the printing head. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view in end elevation of the cooperating feed rolls. Fig. 4: is a cross section through a part of the machine on the line 44 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a section through the cooperating feed rolls on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4. Figs. 4 and 5 are a transverse section and a longitudinal section, respectively, illustrating a preferred form of friction clutch adapted for operation by the lower feed roll shaft for the purpose of imparting rotary motion to one of the two cooperating feed rolls. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the operating crank for the feed rolls. Fig. 7 is a section through the operating mechanism on the line 7-7 of Fig. 6. Figs. 8 to 13, inclusive, illustrate another embodiment of the invention wherein the feed mechanism is operated automatically by the movement of the impression bed; Fig. 8 being a plan view, Fig. 9 a side elevation, Fig. 10 a detail plan view of the feed mechanism, Fig. 11 a side view of said feed mechanism and Figs. 12 and 18 being cross sections on the lines 12-12 and 13-13, respectively, of Figs. 11 and 12.
A horizontal table A is provided with bearings (a for a shaft B, the latter being provided with suitable operating means, such as the crank handle I). Secured rigidly to the table at the respective sides thereof are arched guides 0 provided with longitudinally extending arcuate slots 0. Secured rigidly to shaft B are radial arms I) which are positioned between arched guides c, and on the outer ends of these arms is pivotally mounted a printing head C.
Said head is provided with trunnions 0 bf which the head is pivotally connected to arms D, said trunnions passing through slots 0, the latter serving to guide or direct the movement of said head as it swings back and forth. with 'armsD when shaft B is operated. The trunnions are provided with crank arms d to which are pivoted operating arms (Z, the inner ends of which are pivotedto fixed upstanding lugs d on table A, said crank arms and the operating arms being movable with the printing head in such manner that arms cl will present said head C in proper relation to a ticket strip X as it passes over a printing bed E, the
latter being positioned at one end portion of table A. The printing head is provided with means for holding a type surface" within said head and with means for inking able construction and supported by any suitable ineans upon table A, but when the invention is embodied in a reciprocating bed, as in the construction of Figs. 8 and 9, then said reciprocating bed is operated in unison with the swinging movement of printing head C by mechanism disclosed in a prior application Serial No. 668,609, filed by Flurscheim and Anthony on December 30,
, One part of the feed mechanism consists of means for supporting a rolled ticketstrip in position for said strip to be fed across the impression bed and in the path of the printing head. As shown, a bracket F is secured in any suitable way to an end portion of table A, said bracket extending outwardly from the table and provided with bearings 7, said bearings having open throats or slots The ticket strip is wound or coiled on a spool or reel G, the shaft 9 of which is fitted in bearings f for the purpose of rotatably supporting the spool between the sides of the bracket. It is evident that the reel or spool may be easily removed from the bracket by withdrawing shaft 9 through the slots or throats f of the bearings f, thus 'making provision for removing an empty spool from the machine and replacing said empty spool by a fresh spool having a ticket strip wound thereon. The ticket strip X leads from the spool or reel over table A and printing bed E, the otherwise free end of said ticket strip X being frictionally grippedby a feed mechanism, the latter being positioned at the opposite end of table A from spool or reel G;
The operating parts of the feed mechanism are supported or carried in a substantially vertical frame H, the latter having means for securing it firmly in position upon an end portion of table A. As shown, the frame-is detachably secured to the table and to this end said frame'is provided with a horizontal yoke h, the legs of which are adapted to embrace the respective side portions of the table and to be fixed securely thereto by binding screws h, although it will be understood that equivalent means may be employed for attaching the supporting frame to the table. The feed mechanism embodies cooperating rolls I I, the shafts z z" of which are mounted in suitable bearings provided in the respective side members of upright frame H. Shaft i of the lower feed roll extends freely through a fixed plate J secured to one side of frame H, and on the protruding end of said shaft 6 is secured a suitable operating member, the same being shown in Figs. 1 and (3 as a hand crank J. Feed roll I is mounted loosely on its shaft 11, Whereas feed roll I is attached either rigidly or loosely to its supporting shaft 2', said feed rolls being in frictional contact with each other so that the rotary motion of the lower feed roll will be communicated to the upper feed roll. As shown more particularly in Fig. 5 the lower feed roll is chambered at k, and within said chambered roll is positioned a spring actuated friction clutch which is carried by shaft 2' and is adapted to communicate the rotary motion of shaft 2' to feed roll I. The clutch may be of any suitable or desired construction, but as shown it consists of a member K in the form of a plate which is attached to shaft 21 by a key or feather so that the clutch will slide along the shaft and rotate therewith. Said clutch member is provided with a facing composed of suitable friction material such as the leather disk said facing being firmly attached to the clutch member and positioned for frictional engagement with a head i at one end of hollow feed roll I. The means for actuating the clutch is embodied in a coiled spring 76' which is contained within the chamber of feed roll I, one end of the spring being seated against a head of the feed roll, whereas the other end of the spring bears against clutch member K for the purpose of forcing the latter in one direction within the feed roll, whereby the friction material is of the clutch memher is forcibly pressed into frictional contact with feed roll head 6 thereby connecting the feed roll operatively with shaft z'.
L designates a brake or dog which cooperates with feed roll I to restrain the latter from rotating in one direction. This dog is shown in Fig. 4 as a plate which is pivoted by a pin or screw Z to an end member of upright frame H, said dog being provided with a tooth Z which bites on the periphery of feed roll I. The dog is normally pressed 1 into engagement with the feed roll by a spring L, shown in Fig. 1 as a leaf spring attached at one end to frame H, and having its free end positioned for engagement with said brake L. The bite of tooth Z on the lower feed roll is sufficient to preclude said roll from turning in a backward direction, but when shaft i is operated by crank J then the friction clutch K will be operated by said shaft 2' to impart rotary motion in one direction to feed roll I, which motion is communicated to feed roll I by the frictional contact between the two rolls.
The plate or disk J is provided with a plurality of apertures m m, in two of which are positioned stop pins M M, each stop pin being shiftable into one or more of the apertures. Pins M M are positioned at the respective ends of the throw or movement of crank J so as to enable said crank to turn shaft z through a certain are, but should it be desired to increase the arc of movement of the crank then the pins M M should be shifted from the position shown in Fig. 6
into the other apertures m m. As shown in Fig. 6, crank J is in contact with pin M, and when the crank is operated it moves through an arc of approximately 90, or to the dotted line position of Fig. 6, at which time the pin M arrests the further movement of the crank. This operation of the crank turns feed roll I a certain distance so as to move the ticket strip X for a predetermined distance over the impression bed; should it be desired to increase the length of feed the pin M may be shifted into the other aperture m, and to still further increase the length of feed of the ticket strip pin M may be shifted into the other aperture m, whereby provision is made for increasing the rotation of the rolls and correspondingly increase the length of the ticket strip feed by the action of the rolls across the impres sion bed. Under some circumstances, however, it may be desired to effect a still further increase in the quantity f ticket material to be drawn across the impression bed, and under these circumstances I may remove pin M and employ a shiftable stop of the form shown in Figs. 6 and 7. Disk J is provided on one side with a hub n, and against the rear of this disk is positioned an arm 0, one end of which is provided with an aperture 0 adapted to loosely receive the hub a of the disk, whereby arm 0 is mounted for swinging movement on the hub with reference to shaft 2'. Said arm 0 extends beyond the edge of the disk and in its otherwise free end is a threaded aperture 0 which receives the threaded part of a bolt P,
the latter being secured in ahand lever P or as to be movable therewith, whereby the hand lever is operatively connected with the free end of arm 0. A stop member Q is provided with an aperture 9 to fit loosely around the bolt P, said stop member being positioned between arm 0 and lever P, and a part of the stop member extending across the outer face of disk J so that the stop member is positioned in the path of crank J. The stop member Q is adapted to be clamped in a fixed position relative to disk J by lever P and bolt P, but the stop member and the lever are mounted on the swing ing arm 0 for movement therewith. The lever P may be operated to release the stop member, whereupon the arm, the stop member and the lever may be shifted to any desired position relative to the edge of disk J, after which the lever and the screw bolt operate to clamp the stop member fixedly in its adjusted position, thus interposing the stop member in the path of the crank J to limit the movement thereof in one direction.
In Figs. 46 and 5 there is shown a preferred embodiment of the clutch mechanism whereby the motion of shaft 71 is communicated to lower feed roll I. A suitable clutch support or carrier I preferably a disk, is secured fixedly to shaft i, within the chamber of the hollow feed roll, and on this carrier is pivotally mounted a dog I by a pin i Said dog is shown as tapering to a point adapted to bite against the inner surface of hollow roll I, and said dog is actuated by a spring I to retain it normally into frictional contact with said roll. vWhen the crank is turned to impart movement in one direction to shaft '5, the dog acts on the feed roll to turn it for a corresponding distance and thus feed. the required length of the ticket strip; but upon the return movement of the crank and the shaft, the dog slips idly within the hollow feed roll.
The feed roll is precluded from turning on the shaft during the return of the crank by a suitable brake, such as the dog L l1eretofore described, but in lieu of the pivoted brake or dog I may use the friction brake L shown in Fig. 4% in the form of a strip of friction material, such as leather, secured fixedly in position by a clamping strip L secured to frame A, so that said strip will have the desired engagement constantly with the roll.
The ticket strip X passes from the reel over the table and the impression bed and between the rolls. The strip is fed or moved by operating the crank J to impart a certain turning movement to the feed rolls. The machine as shown is operated by hand, one hand operating crank b to impart movement to the printing head G, whereas the other hand'operates crank J for imparting move ment to the feed mechanism. It will be seen that crank b will force the printing head downwardly upon the strip so as to secure a downward impression thereon, and when said crank b is reversed then crank J should be operated-to impart rotation to rolls I I for drawing the desired length of ticket strip across the impression bed.
The ticket strip is guided toward the impression bed, or held from upward displacement relative thereto, by a guide yoke R .vvhieh isattached to table A adjacent to amend of impression bed E. 7 Other edge each other so as to accommodate said guides to ticket strips which vary in width. The upright frame of the feed mechanism is provided with a rod 8 on which red are positioned collars 8. These collars carry the edge guides S which depend from the rod into position at the respective side edges of strip X, but these guides are retained in position by clamping screws 8 which are mounted in collars s and are adapted for frictional engagement with the'supporting rod .9.
The machine illustrated in Figs. 8 to 1.8, inclusive, embodies the table A, shaft B, arms D, slotted guides 0, printing head C,
7 means for operating said printing head and the spool or. reel G for supporting a rolled ticket strip in position to be supplied to the impression bed E, all the foregoing parts being constructed and operating sub stantially as hereinbefore described. The impression bed, however, is mounted on table A for reciprocating 'movement, and for this purpose mechanism is provided to operate said bed E in unison with the swinging movement of printing head C, which mechanism is similar in all substantial particulars to the bed actuating mechanism disclosed in application Serial No. 668,609, filed December 30, 1911 by Flurs'cheim and Anthony, to which application reference has heretofore been made. A part of said bed actuating mechanism is illustrated in Fig. 9, wherein t designates a gear on power shaft B, which gear meshes with another gear 15 adapted to actuate crank arm t the latter imparting movement toa lever T, said lever having an adjustable member t which is engaged by a rod t for the purpose of imparting variable movement to the lever. Said lever T is operated by the means described, said means being disclosed' more fully in the Flurscheim and Anthony application Serial No. 668,609, and said lever in turn serves tooperate devices, disclosed in the Flurscheim and Anthony application, by which movement is imparted to bed E for the purpose of presenting successive duplicate portions of a ticket or ticket strip to the printing head in such manner that the desired data may be printed in duplicate upon said ticket or ticket strip, but as the bed operating mechanism does not form any part of this invention I have not considered it necessary to illustrate the same herein.
Thefeed mechanism of Figs. 8 to 13, inclusive, is actuated by the movement of the reciprocating bed and the same will now be described in connection with said Figs. 8 to 18. The feed mechanism embodies cooperating rolls U U loosely mounted on shafts u u, respectively, said shafts being supported in suitable bearings of an upright roll housing U Said roll housing is provided with a yoke 14 adapted to embrace the side portions of table A. As shown, the legs of the yoke are provided with grooves m adapted to receive the pins it which are fixed to table A, and within the yoke are secured other pins 11, positioned to enter the socket a provided in the table. The yoke is adapted to be slipped into position on the table for the pins a to enter grooves u and for the pins 165 to enter the sockets it", after which binding screw u mounted in the yoke may be tightened against the table for the purpose of rigidly clamping the yoke and the roll housing upon said table. Feed l'olls U U are provided with gears V V, said gears meshing directly together so that the motion of one feed roll will be communicated to the other feed roll by the gears. Said gears are fast with the respective feed rolls, but the feed rolls and their gears are mounted loosely on shafts u a so that each feed roll and its gear will operate independently of the shaft. The gear V attached rigidly to lower feed roll U is provided on one face thereof with a pawl e which is normally pressed in one direction by a spring o so that the pawl will engage with a ratchet W, the latter being positioned adjacent to one face of gear V which is loose on lower feed roll shaft u. The ratchet is integral with a gear w, and this gear is in mesh. with one member of a double rack. The gear V is provided with a pawl 41 which is pressed by a spring o into engagement with ratchet V, said ratchet being integral or fast with a gear 10. It will thus be seen that the connected ratchet 1V and gear toare fitted loosely on the shaft u of lower feed roll U, and, similarly, the connected ratchet \V and gear '10 are fitted loosely on the shaft u of upper feed roll U. A salient feature consists in employing ratchets WV W of opposite hand, the teeth of ratchet TV extending to the right and the teeth of ratchet, W extending to the left. Furthermore, ratchets W W are adjacent to gears V V, respectively, so that the ratchet W and pawl 12 are adapted to communicate motion to roll U when gear to is turned in one direction, whereas ratchet W lower members 2 2 being provided with gear teeth on their lower edges. The rack is litted laterally in close relation to one side of roll housing U and said rack occupies such relation to the gears that the upper member 2 will mesh with gear w on roll shaft 10, whereas the lower member 2 will mesh with the gear w on the shaft of lower roll U. The rack is guided for rectilinear reciprocating movement, and said rack is operatively connected with reciprocating bed E by a stud 2 which is supported in an upstanding lug 2 attached to the table E. l/Vhen the table moves in one direction the lower rack e meshes with gear w so as to impart movement to ratchet W which acts on the pawl o for the purpose of turning gear V and feed roll U in one direction, the movement of said roll and gear being communicated through gear V to roll U, the ratchet W being idle. As the table moves in an opposite direction the rack Z is correspondingly actuated so that the upper member 2 will mesh with gear 10 to turn ratchet l/V which acts against pawl o toturn gear V, whereby upper roll U, lower gear V and lower roll U will be operated to turn in the same direction, ratchet W being idle. The pawls and ratchets operate alternately so that as the rack moves in one direction, one ratchet is effective and the other idle, but when the rack moves in the opposite direction the conditions of operation are re versed, and thus the feed rolls will be operated automatically to turn in the required direction for feeding the proper strip notwithstanding the reciprocating movement of the bed and the rack.
The roll housing supports the rod 3 having collars 8 provided with clamping screws 8 and the depending guides S which engage with the edge of the paper, all as before described.
The ticket strip when advanced by the rolls U U passes through and beyond the housing U so as to be presented to a cutting mechanism, the latter being of any suitable or preferred construction. One element of the cutting mechanism is a fixed member supported on the roll housing U but the other element of the cutting mechanism is a movable bar Y having a cutting edge adapted to cooperate with a fixed cutting member. This cutter bar Y is pivoted on a bolt 1 passing through a lug on the roll housing U and held under tension by a spring y so that the cutter bar will be drawn into close contact with the fixed cutter member. To the said end of the cutter bar is connected one end of an actuating lever Y pivoted on a bolt g around which is coiled a spring Y one arm of which acts on the lever Y so as to hold the cutter normally in a raised position. This lever Y is in the path of, or operatively related to, lever D so that the cutter operating lever Y will be automatically actuated by the mechanism which imparts movement to the reciprocating bed E. The free end of cutter bar Y is connected by a link 3 to the cutter actuating lever Y and said free end of the cutter bar is drawn toward the fixed cutter member by a spring g The cutter bar Y is normally in a raised position out of the path of the ticket strip, but when the-ticket strip is fed beyond the feed rolls, then the cutter bar is actuated so as to cooperate with a fixed cutter bar in cutting off a predetermined length of ticket.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A ticket printing machine embodying a bed-frame, an impression bed supported on the bed frame intermediate its end portions, means for supporting a roll ticket strip on said bed-frame and at one side of the impression bed, cooperating feed rolls positioned at the opposite side of the impression bed from said rollsupporting means, and a printing head movable relatively to the impression bed, said printing head and impression bed cooperating to secure the desired printed impressions upon the ticket strip intermediate the roll of material and said feed rolls, and said feed rolls being operable independently of the movement of the printing head and adapted to draw a ticket strip across the impression bed.
2. A ticket printing machine embodying an impression bed, roll-supporting means positioned at one side of said impression bed for feeding a ticket strip over said bed, cooperating feed rolls positioned at the op posite side of said impression bed, said feed rolls being operable at will and independently of a printing head for drawing the ticket strip across said impression bed whereby said ticket strip is moved for predetermined lengths and at intervals with respect to said bed, and a printing head reciprocable with respect to said impression bed, said printing head and the impression bed being positioned intermediate the feed rolls and .the roll-supporting means for printing the desired impressions upon the ticket strip prior to feeding said strip be tween said feed rolls.
3. A ticket printing machine embodying an impression bed, roll-supporting means positioned for feeding a ticket strip over said bed, cooperating feed rolls adapted to draw the ticket strip across the impression bed, a printing head movable relatively to said impression bed, said printing head and impression bed being positioned for cooperation with each other intermediate the feed rolls and the roll supporting means, where by the printed impressions are obtained on said ticket strip prior to feeding the latter by said rolls, and means independently of the movement of the printing head and controllable at will for imparting variable rotative movement to the feed rolls so as to correspondingly .vary the length of the ticket strip advanced by the operation of the feed rolls.
4. A ticket printing machine embodying cocperating feed rolls, one of which is mounted loosely upon. a shaft, means independent of the movement of a printing head for operating said feed rolls to'impart rotative movement thereto, means controllable at will and cooperating with said loose feed roll for effecting a variation in the rotative movement of said feed rolls, rollsupportlng means positloned at an appreciable distance from said feed rolls, and a" cooperating impression bed and printing head positloned intermediate the feed rolls and the roll-supporting means for securing the desired printed impressions upon the loosely mounted feed roll for checking the rotation thereof in one direction, means controllable at will and cooperating with the loosely mounted roll for effecting a variation in the rotative movement thereof and in the direction permitted by said checking 1 means, roll-supporting means positioned at an appreciable distance from the feed rolls,
and a'cooperating impression bed and print- 1 ing head for securing the desiredprinted impressions upon the ticket strip advanced bysaidfeed rolls.
6. In a ticket. printing machine, the combination with an impression bed, and means for supplying a ticket strip thereto, of a feedroll shaft, a feedroll loose thereon, a
clutch cooperating with said shaft and roll,
a second roll, means operable at will for imparting rotative movement to the shaft, means shiftable at will for arresting the rotative movement of the shaft and for vary- Copies of this patent may be obtained for ingthe extent of such rotative movement so as to vary the length of the strip fed by the rotation of said feed rolls, and a brake cooperating with the loose feed roll to restrain it from rotation in a backward direction.
7 In a ticket printing machine, the combination with an impression bed, and means for supplying a ticket strip thereto, of a feed roll shaft, a feed roll loose thereon, a clutch cooperating with said shaft and roll, a second roll, means operable at will for imparting rotative movement to the feed roll shaft, and means shiftable at will and cooperating with the feed roll shaft for arresting the rotative movement of said shaft and for varying the extent of such rotative movement so as to vary the length of the strip fed by the rotation of the first and second rolls.
8. In a ticket printing machine, the combination with an impression bed, and means for supplying a ticket strip thereto, of a feed roll shaft, a feed roll loose thereon, a clutch cocperatin-g with said shaft and roll, a second feed roll, a hand crank for imparting rotative movement to the shaft, and means shiftable at will and positioned in the path of said crank for arresting the retative movement of the shaft, and for varying the extent of such rotative movement so as to vary the length of the strip fed by the rotation of the feed rolls.
9. In a ticket printing machine, the combination with an impression bed, and means for supplying a ticket strip thereto, of a feed roll shaft, a feed roll loose thereon, a clutch cooperating with said shaft and roll, a second feed roll, a manually operable crank for operating the feed roll shaft, and a shiftable stop positioned in the path of the crank whereby the movement of the crank may be arrested and varied within certain predetermined limits.
