RECORD-ROLL REGISTER.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM C. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook :and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Record-Roll Registers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in record-roll registers and includes a specific form of feeder covered generically in, Letters Patent No. 1,381,140.
Heretofore, record-roll registers have been provided with a train of gears extending from a feed-roll shaft to a record-roll, a'friction release device in the record-roll, a device for locking the record-roll in position, and means for clamping a record strip to the record-roll; all of which is rather expensive of construction and troublesome in use.
The prime object of my invention is to provide a record-roll register with automatic means for winding up a record-roll by utilizing the rotary motion of the registerform rolls produced by feeding forms therefrom.
A further object is to provide a recordroll register with such an arrangement of the form rolls, the record-roll, and unwind 30 record roll, that one of said form rolls shall be adjacent the record-roll, whereby motion may be readily transmitted from the periphery thereof to the record-roll periphery by rolling contact.
A further object is to provide a record-roll register having one of the formrolls thereof arranged adjacent the record-roll, with. an interposed idler roll adapted to positively feed the record strip at preciselythe same rate as the form strips, without gears of a friction release device.

A further object is to provide a recordroll register with a form roll adapted to unwind from the under side thereof, an unwind record roll disposed rearwardly from said form roll and a record-roll disposed for wardly therefrom, a toothed idler-roll interposed between the form roll and record-roll, and such a mounting for the record-roll and idler-roll that gravity and the tension of the record strip cooperate for producing a positive rolling contact with the form roll.
A further object is to provide a record-roll register wit-h an accessible rec o'rd-roll-adapted tobe held in operative position by gravity 4 and the tension of the record strip, thus obviating the necessity for a mechanical look ing device.
A further object is to overcome the necessity for a register record-roll strip clamping means, by feeding the surface of the strip on the record-roll. I
And a further object is to provide a record-roll register with an improved device for feeding the form rolls, having no mechanical connection with the record-roll and mounted solely on the machine cover. Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these Objectsin view, my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts all as will be described hereinafter and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims- An embodiment of the invention is shown inthe accompanyingdrawings forming, a part of this specification and in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing the manner of feeding out'forms after writing a record. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the two extreme positions of the register form feeder, one position being indicated by dotted lines. Thepreferred form of construction comprises'a cover 1 hinged to a body 2 and supporting a slide-rod 3 adjacent one edge thereof. Extending transversely from one end of slide-rod 3 is a severing blade 4 having feeding teeth ;5 extending rearwardly and downwardly therefrom in such a manner as to be visible during the feeding operation, thus enabling the operator to detect possible tearing of holes in forms 6. Secured at-the other end of slide-rod 3 is a handle member 7, the free end of which being adapted to cooperate with a gravity-operated cam 8 for tilting severing blade 4 just prior to engagement of teeth 5 with form holes.
At the beginning of the feeding operation, member 7 slides under cam .8, which rises to thedotted' position, as shown in Fig. 8, thus offering no resistance to the forward movement of said member. When the latter jumps over cam 8 at the completion of the return stroke of the feeder, the wedge-shaped teeth 5 engage the holes of forms 6 and restore registration thereof, whereupon severing blade 4 is locked in normal position by means of a spring-actuated catch pawl 9. There being nothing to release, the operator merely reciprocates member 7, whereupon the fedout forms are torn off.
The operation is performed with the right hand, and the handle 7 is in a convenient position to grasp after writing a record. The passage or jumping of member 7 over cam 8 is scarcely perceptible by the operator, and the natural weight of the hand effects the restoration of form registration and locking of the severing blade automatically.
At (the front end of the register, a framedglass 10 is provided to expose the record strip, and adjacent to said glass is a button 11 for locking cover 1 inclosed position. Slide-rod 3 is preferably tubular, and loosely mounted therein is a small stationary rod 12, which is threaded and screwed into a depending flange portion of cover 1, as shown in Fig. 9. Slide-rod 3 is free to slide in bearings 13 depending from cover 1, one thereof serving as a stop for a portion 77 of member 7 in limiting the out stroke of the feeder. In case it is desired to feed shorter forms, a screw 133 may be passed through cover 1 so as to project sufficiently therefrom to arrest the movement of portion 77, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 4:.
The register table 14 is provided" with notches 15 in the front end thereof to clear teeth 5, and a transverse slot 16 through which the record strip 17 is passed on its way to a record-roll 18. The form rolls 66 and 666, and also the unwind record roll 177 are provided with ordinary spools 19; and idler rolls 20 are provided to alleviate the friction of form strips 6 and record strip 17 in-their passage over table 14.
The record-roll compartment of body 2 is provided with a door 21 and a lock 22 therefor, as shown in Fig. 3. An idler-roll 23 having pointed teeth 24 is interposed between form roll 66 and record-roll 18 for transmitting motion from the former .to the latter. Idler-roll 23 is mounted free to rocafe and to slide downwardly between inclined ways 2 1 and 25 formed integral with body 2, and record-roll 18 has a like mounting in said ways. From this construction, it will be clear that the weight of idler-roll 23 and record-roll 18 supplemented by the tension of record strip 17 creates an effective rolling contact for winding the record strip around the record roll.
Gravity cam 8 is mounted on two studs 26 screwed into cover 1, there being holes .27 in the cam slightly larger than the studs and a hinge pin 28 passed through the studs and cam on which the latter is adapted to oscillate freely.
It will be noted in Fig. 3 that form roll 66 is unwound from the under side thereof and that the form strip 6 therefrom is passed around form roll 666 and thence over table 14:. The printing, therefore, on the forms of roll 66 must be outside in order to appear on the table, as shown in Fig. 1.
In the operation of the register, idler-roll 23 rotates in the direction of the arrow for winding record strip 17 during the operation of the form feeder. The record-roll 18 is efiectively locked in operative position by the tension of record strip 17, but the same is readily removed when desired. To facilitate the entry of the record-roll, way 24 is made slightly shorter than way 25, as shown in Fig. 3.
While no carbon housing or carbon sheets are shown in the drawings, it is understood that they are necessary factors in a machine of this character. And, while I have shown a slide feeder, the record-roll device may be employed in connection with a roll feeder, if desired.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new is 2* i 1. A record-roll register employing forms and a record strip, comprising a recorcLroll, an unwind record roll from which a record strip is carried to said record-roll, a form roll interposed between said rolls and means for feeding forms therefrom, and means for transmitting the peripheral motion of said form roll to saidrecord-roll.
2. A record-roll register employing forms and a record strip, comprising a recordroll, an unwind record roll from which a record strip is carried to said record roll, a form roll interposed between said rolls and means for feeding forms therefrom, and rotatable means for transmitting the peripheral motion of said form roll to the record-roll.
3. A; record-roll register employing forms and a record strip, comprising a recordroll, an unwind record roll from which a record strip is carried over the register table to said record-roll, a form roll interposed between said rolls and means for feeding forms therefrom over the record and a record strip, comprising a recordroll and an unwind record-roll connected therewith by a record strip, a form rollbetween said rolls and means for feeding forms therefrom. a roll having pointed teeth between said form roll and record-roll for transmitting the peripheral motion of the former to the latter, and inclined ways for supporting the toothed roll and record-roll.
6. A. record roll register comprising an unwind record roll carrying a record strip, a record roll adapted to receive the strip from said unwind record roll, two form rolls for carrying forms, means for feeding forms therefrom, an idler roll between the form roll and record roll, and ways supporting said idler roll and record roll inclined upwardly from said form roll.
7. A. record r011 register comprising an unwind roll carrying a record strip. a record roll adapted to receive the strip from said unwind record roll, a pair of form rolls for carrying forms, one of said form rolls being between said record roll and unwind record roll, means for feeding the forms from said form rolls, the forms from. one form roll being carried under the unwind record roll and over the other form roll, an idler toothed roll between one form roll and the record roll for transmitting the peripheral motion of the former to the latter, and a pair of ways inclined upwardly from one form roll at each end of the idler roll and record roll.
8. A record-roll register employing perforated forms and a record strip, comprising a record-roll and an unwind record roll, form rolls and a device for feeding forms therefrom, automatic means actuated by one form rollfor winding a record strip on the record roll from the unwind record roll, said device comprising a tubular slide rod and a stationary rod telescoped therein, bearings for said slide-rod and a severing blade extending at right angles to one end thereof, a handle arm at the other end of said slide-rod, a gravity cam cooperating with said arm for tilting said severing blade,
teeth on the latter, and means for locking the free end of said severing blade.
9. A register employing perforated forms, comprising a severing blade and teeth depending therefrom for engaging form holes, a longitudinal slide rod carrying said severing blade, bearings for said slide rod permitting said severing blade to have a tilting movement,a handle arm at one end of said slide rod and a cam adapted to cooperate therewith for tilting said severing blade, and a means for lockingthe free end of said severing blade.
