Abstract
837,194. Towel dispensers. CHEESMAN, J.J. Aug. 22. 1956 [Sept. 19, 1955], No. 26713/55. Class 18. [Also in Groups VIII and XL(b)] A cabinet for dispensing paper towelling has a recess 10, Fig. 3., across its front face with shelf 11 on to which a portion of towelling severed from a roll 19 is fed, the picking up of which portion by the user actuates the mechanism to feed a fresh portion. The shelf 11 is supported by spring side brackets 12 and a series of guiding tongues 13 projecting into corresponding circumferential grooves 14 of a roller 15, so that the shelf pivots through sidebrackets 11a about the spindle-ends of this roller. An upper roller 16, for metering and severing a length of towelling equal in length to its circumference, is geared to roller 15 through pinions 15a and 16a at both ends. The web of towelling is led from a supply-roll 19, Fig. 3, occupying the lower part of the cabinet beneath a tensioning bar 18 around an auxiliary roller 17 and delivered between rollers 15 and 16 on to the shelf 11. When the shelf 11 is depressed by the user removing a portion of towelling resting thereon, a bracket 27 on the under side of the shelf thrusts on a spring plunger 26 having a pawl 25 engaging in the set of teeth 24, which rotates the shaft 22 to operate a switch and energize a motor 20, causing the rollers 15 and 16 to revolve so that a metered portion of towelling is delivered on to the shelf 11 for the next user. A rotating arm 29 moves in correspondence with the metering roller 16 to open the switch when the roller has completed its rotation. During the rotation of roller 16, the web is severed or partially severed by a blade 30, Fig. 5, mounted within the roller 16 in a longitudinal slot 35, being urged to project by compression springs 36 around guide pins 37 extending from the back of the blade across a bore 38 of the roller into slideable engagement in holes 39. Automatic projection and retraction of the blade in conjunction with the rotation of the roller is effected by a cam device at each end of the roller assembly, consisting of a pin 40 projecting from the end of the blade through a radial slot 41 of the roller and into engagement with a fixed internal cam plate 42 contoured to hold the blade normally retracted against springs 36 but permitting it to snap out at the appropriate time followed by return to its retracted position. Alternative operation of the switch can be effected by means of an electric eye located in a side wall of recess 10.
