My invention relates to sanitary drinking fountains, and the invention comprises a combined drinking and water delivery device adapted to be used with a basin cock or other water distributing device, substantially as herein shown and described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The objects of the invention are, to pro.- vide a separate article of manufacture and sale comprising a combination water delivery device and overflow cup wherein the water will pass through the spout to a drinking outlet and into the cup and out again through the spout, thus permitting the device to be used as a drinking fountain and also as an ordinary faucet; to furnish concealed means which can be adjusted to give any desired flow of water under any pressure; to make a simple arrangement of parts to prevent the lips of the drinker from com ing into Contact with the water outlet; to supply a fastening screw sleeve for the overflow cup which will permit the cup to be made of metal, porcelain, rubber, glass or other material and be held in place with a minimum of strain and danger of breakage; to build a unitary structure of the least number of parts which on the whole makes change of adjustment and tampering of the concealed parts diiicult to persons unfamiliar with the device; to procure a novel grouping of elements adapted to immediately drain all the water from the cup or bowl after individual use thereof; and to produce a practical combination of parts proportioned and particularly constructed to be attached to the bod=y of basin cocks, bibbs, valves, or like devices.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section centrally of my improved drinking and discharge member attached to a basin cock shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the overflow cup, and Fig. 3 a similar view of the outlet member. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the regulating cap, and Fig. 5 a similar view of the spout.
The invention comprises a'delivery member 2 threaded at one end for attachment to a basin cock or other water distributing device. This member 2 differs, however, from the ordinary spout in that it is provided with a wall 3 near its curved front end to sub-divide the discharge passage 4 into two separate channels, and in that a circular enlargement 5 and a projecting nipple 6 is provided as a top part of the spout, whereby lan overflow cup 7 and a water outlet member 8 may be detachably secured to the spout to direct the flow of water upwardly and then downwardly on opposite sides of said division wall 3. The flanged portion of enlargement 5 is internally threaded to receive. a metal screw-sleeve 9 for the reduced lower end of overflow cup 7, the said parts being united by cement, porcelain, solder or otherwise, and the cup being made either of metal, porcelain, glass, rubber, oi other material. The screw-sleeve has a knurled portion 10 adapted to give a good hand grip in removing and replacing the cup 7, and the strain necessarily comes upon said screw-sleeve and not upon the cup,-a desirable feature when the cup is made of fragile or thin material. If preferred, portion 10 may be constructed for wrench engagement, compelling the use of a tool to remove the cup and making it more diflicult for unauthorized persons without the proper tools to gain access to and tamper with the adjustments of the internal parts which comprise the member 8 and a regulating cap 12.
lvlember 8 is tubular, bulb-shaped, or tapering, preferably made of vitreous material, and rigidly secured within the upper end of a metal tube 15 by cement or other'- wise. The tube 15 has threaded engagement with the eXternally-tlneaded base 16 of nipple 6 and covers and conceals cap 12 with a slight annular space 14 between the walls of said tube and cap. Nipple 6 has a central bore 17 communicating with the main water passage 4 in the member 2, and the upper end of this nipple is reduced and of cone-shape, whereas its middle portion is of slightly larger diameter and threaded to engage the threaded portion of cap 1Q which has a tapered or closed conical seat within its upper reduced portion adapted to co-act with the cone end of the nipple in determiningl the amount of water passing through the device. A spreading film of water may thus be caused to issue downwardly from the nipple end into the annular space 18 within the cap from whence it is permittedY is preferably made with a cross groove 19V in its top end adapted to receive a screwdriver blade, whereby the cap may be rotated to regulate the pressure and the amount of water passing to outlet member 8.' Now it will be noted that the cup 7 is flared outwardly to catch the overflow, and is provided with a rounded edge 20 projected to a higher plane thanthe outlet vend of member 8. This relationship of parts, and the fact that the cup at its top is purposelyk made of a predetermined diameter, makes it practically impossible for the lips of a drinker to come into contact with the outlet member 8, the edge 20 offering obstruction to both the chin and the nose.
The water that overflows from outlet member 8 passes down through the cup or bowl 7 and is `immediately discharged through the opening 21 at the front of division wall 3 and out of the curved end of the spout. When the water is shut off at the cock A, all the water that may have been contacted by the lips isdrained 0E through opening 21.
A very small drain opening 22 is provided in division wall 3, and a similar opening 23 is made in the lowerend of tube 15, whereby all the water in the various passages and chambers may be permitted to escape after the main passage is closed at cock A. Il owever, no limitation is intended by this disclosure as the device is effective without the openings 22 and 23, particularly where the installation is indoors or protected from freezing conditions. This drinking and discharge member may be made part of any kind of a stop-cock or shut-off device, and the flow of water may be continuous or turned on and olf vat will. The spout 2 with its enlargement 5 and'nipple 6 may also be an integral part of a faucet body, but as shown, it is a separate part adapted to be marketed and used with cocks or faucets in general use.
lVhat I claim is:
A spout for faucets and basin cocks having a horizontal passage with a vertical division wall at its front, a flanged seat substantially flush with the horizontal top surface of said spout and a projecting discharge nipple centrally within said seat having an open conical upper end, a portion of said nipple below said conical end being screw threaded, said nipple and seat having openings communicating with said divided water passage, a perforated regulating cap screwing onto said nipple,` said cap having a closed conical end co-acting with the conical end of the nipple to form a passage, a tubular water-column forming member surrounding said cap and detachablv connected with the base of said nipple, and an overflow cup detachably secured to said flanged seat and surrounding member.
