WEB-FOLDING MACHINE;
Specification of Letters latcnt.
Patented June 20, 1916.
Application filed November 29, 1913. Serial No. 803,735.
1 b all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Cons'r m'r T. CUN- DALL, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Stonington, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in ob-Folding Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide manual means for controlling the surface speed of one or more of the web feed rolls of the web feeding mechanism so that all of the web sections may be driven at the desired speeds to insure the proper association of the web sections without interfering with the operation of the machine.
A practical embodiment of my invention is representedin the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a section through so much of a web folding machine as will give a clear understanding of the invention, Fig. 2 is a View in front elevation of the same, Fig. 8'
is an enlarged detail section showing the manual means for expandmg and contracting the web feed roll to vary its surfacespeed, and Fig. 4 is a detail cross section taken in the plane of the line A-A of Fig. 3.
Two wide webs 1 are shown as passing over the slitting roll 2 where they are separated into a plurality of superposed web sections by the slitters 3. The plurality of su-' perp'osed web sections are then passed around the single turners 4 and as they leave the points of the said turners the superposed web sections pass between the pairs of rolls 5, 6. The superposed web sections then pass around a plurality of feed rolls 7 on their way to the pair of rolls 8, 9, where they are associated. In the present instance I have shown two of these intermediate feed rolls 7 acting upon each pair of superposed web sections as it passes from the pair of rolls 5, 6, to the pair of rolls 8, 9. A cross shaft 10 is driven from the vertical drive shaft 11 through the bevel gears 12, 13.
Each pair of rolls 5, 6, is driven from the cross shaft 10 through the bevel gears 14:, 15, and intermeshing spur gears 16, 17.
The slitting roll 2 is driven from the shaft 10 through the train of gears 18, 19, 20, 21,
F The means for driving the web feed rolls 7 for each pair of superposed web sections is herein shown as the train of gears 28, 29, 30, 31, I will proceed to describe the structure of one of these feed rolls 7 and the manual means for expanding and contracting the same for varying its surface speed, it being understood that the other feed rolls 7 are similar in construction and operation.
The shaft of the feed roll 7 is denoted by 83, which shaft is mounted to rotate in suitable bushings 84, 35, fixed against rotative movement in the machine frame.
The feed roll itself comprises a cylindrical shell 36 divided longitudinally as shown at 37 to permit the expansion and contraction of the shell. This shell is provided with split contracting rings 38, 39, surrounding its ends.
End blocks 40, 41, are keyed to the shaft 33 to slide lengthwise thereof, which end blocks are provided with tapered'portions 4:2, 43,- respectively. These tapered portions enter the opposite ends of the shell 36. Manual means are provided for moving these'end blocks 40, 41, toward and away from each other for expanding and contracting the shell 36, which means is shown herein as comprising yokes 44, l5, having oppositely arranged pairs of shoes 46, &7, located in circumferential grooves 4:8, 49, in the end blocks 40, 41. These yokes have a screw threaded engagement with the bushings 31 as shown at 50, 51, and are also provided with gears 52, 53, which mesh with pinions 5 1, 55, fixed on a cross shaft 56 mounted in the machine frame. This shaft 56 is provided with a suitable handle 57. The turning of the handle 57 in one direction will force the end blocks l0, 11, toward each other and thereby expand the shell 36 of the roll, increasing the diameter of the roll and increasing its surface speed. By turning the handle 57 in the other direction, the end blocks4cO, 11, will be moved away from each other permitting the shell 36 of the roll to contract and thus lessen the diameter of the roll and thereby decrease its surface speed.
For supporting the shell on the shaft intermediate the ends of the shell and for keying the shell to the shaft, I provide a centrally arranged interior collar 58, diametrically through which collar and shaft a pin 16 5 9 is passed, one end of which pin extends into the shell 36 opposite the slit 37 and the other end of which pin projects into the said slit.-
1 It will be seen that the spring'contracting rings 38', 39, not on'ly serve to assist in the ycon'trac-tion ofthe shell 36 of the roll when the end blocks 40, 41, are moved outwardly away from each other,-but also serve to reinforce the endsof the shell and prevent the distortion of the shell when the end blocks are moved inwardly toward each other.
7 'From the abovedescription, it will be seen that one or more of the feed rolls may be adjusted to the desired surface speed without interfering with the main drive of the machine and rolls, thus insuring the proper driving effect upon the web section or sections to properly adjust the sections by accelerating and retarding their speed so as to bring all of the web sections into exact'register at the assembling rolls 8, 9.
While I have shown and described the feeding and slitting of two wide webs into a plurality of superposed'web sections, it is to be understood that the invention 'may be 7 used in connection with one or more wide webs and sections slit therefrom. What I claim is 1. Web 1 feeding mechanism including Y i meansffor feeding a a plurality of web sectlons, assoc ating means therefor, web feed 'rolls for each ;.of said" sections, and manual meansfor independently expanding the rolls to change their respective surface speeds for insuringthe' proper feeding and association contracted'web feed rolls for 7 sectionsahd 'manual means for independa of the web sections.
2. Welo feeding mechanism means for feeding a plurality of tions, associating means therefor, normally ently expanding the rolls to change their respective surface speeds for insuring the Y proper feeding and association of the web sections.
'3. l/Veb feeding mechanism including meansfor feeding a plurality of web secmeans for feeding a plurality of web secv tions, associating means therefor, longitudi- 'nally' divided web feed rolls for each of said sections and manual means for independently expanding the rolls to change theirre- 'spective surface speeds for insuring the proper feeding and association of the web sections. p
4. WVeb feeding mechanism including tions, associating means therefor, normally contracted longitudinallydivided web feed rolls for each of said sections and manual 7 Copies or this patentmay be. obtained for including web sec-' each of said shaft having oppositely tapered portions engaging the ends of the shell and manual means for moving the end blocks in opposite directions for expanding the shell to change its surface speed.

7 In web feeding mechanism, a web feed roll including a shaft, a cylindrical shell divided longitudinally, means for supporting the shell on the shaft intermediate the ends of the shell and for keying the shell to the shaft, end blocks movable along the shaft having oppositely tapered portions engaging the ends of the shell, fixed bushings, yokes loosely engaging the end blocks havscrew threaded engagement with the said bushings and a hand wheel geared to said yokes for turning them to move the end blocks in opposite directions for expanding the shell to change its surface speed.
8. Inweb feeding mechanism, a web feed roll including a cylindrical shell divided longitudinally, end blocks having oppositely tapered portions engaging the ends of the shell, split spring contracting rings surflve cents each, by addressing the "Commissioner of latents, Wuhing'tol, D. G."
