PACKAGE SEAL.
APPLICATION FILED :uugzs. 1913.

ll AS7396.
Original application filed March 12, 1913, Serial No. 753,749.
Serial No. 775,641.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, W iLLLiM; \V. Fnnscnn, a citizen of the l 'nited States, and a resident of lelham, in the county of lv'estchester and State of New York, have invented new and useful improvements in Package- Seals, of which the following; is a spec1fi cation, reference being had ,to the accompanying d1a \'ings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pack age wrapped and sealed with a device embodying my improvements; Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the seal; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank before it is folded into position for use, and Fig. l shows the seal in folded and clamped position.
My invention relates to devices for sealing packages, in which a cord, rope or wire is employed. and my improvements consist n mechanism for protecting the knot in the cord,-'rope or wire, thereby preventing the package from being opened by untying the cord, rope or wire. To this end I provide a seal which will inclose the knot and which may be used with cords, ropes or wires of varying characters.
My innn'oved seal is of simple and cheap construction and provides a closure for containing the knot and also serves to indicate whether or not the package or its contents have been tampered with.
The foregoing, and Other objects of my in vention are hereinafter more specifically described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, the seal A is preferably formed of a single piece of sheet metal, which may be of any suitable shape but which I prefer to be substantially of circular form when completed. The seal A is comprised of two sides 2, 2 having a connecting piece 3. The connecting piece 5 has suitable apertures 4.- through Which the ends of thecord may be inserted. Upon the edges or lips 5 of the side 2' are integral projections or studs 6, and the lips 5 of the other side 2 have orifices 7 for the reception of the studs 6. The sides 2, 2' have outwardly bowed portions 8, 8' which, when riveted or secured together, form a chamber 9 for the reception of the knot 10 to be tied in thecord 11.
My device is applied as follow- The package is tied in the usual manner Wit/Kl a cord 11 and is knotted, preferably Specification of Letters Patent.
sides 2, as
as indicated Patented June 20, 1915. Divided and this application filed June 25,
at 12. The loose ends of the cord 11 may then be passed through the apertures 4 and a hard knot 10 tied adjacent the inner face f the connecting piece 3, and the loose ends may then be trimmed off, if desired. The folding of the blank A over the knot 10 may then be completed, thus causin the studs 0 to pass through the orifices 7, and any suitable tool may be used to upset or clench the studs (3 upon the lips 5 of t e is shown in Fig. .2. Th" knot will then be inclosed in the chamber and will be inaccessible, since the lips 5 5' of the sides 2, a will be held in close a! ti firm contact by means of the upset studs or rivets U. Any tampering with the studs 6 after they have been upset will be readily ascertained upon inspection, and will indicate whether or not anyone had tried to loosen the seal and thereby untie the knot.
The present application is a divisional of my eo-pending application Serial Number 753,740, liled March 12, 1913.
it is obvious that various modificationsmay be made in the form of seal which I have shown and described herein without departing from my invention, since What I claim is:
l. in a package seal, a one piece metal sheet apertured for the ends of a' cord, a dish-shaped chamber formed between the folded sides of the metal sheet adapted to completely inclose and protect a knot in the ends of the cord and locking means for the chamber comprising a plurality of studs integrally formed upon a lip of one of the l'ohled sides of the metal sheet and adapted when the folded sides are brought into contact to pass through openings in the lip of the other side and to be upset and expanded.
2. A closure fonpackages consisting of a string passed around the package and a bendable metal sheet having perforations near its center of symmetry, through which the ends of the string are passed and knotted, the :Said sheet being folded along the line of the perforations thus inclosing the knot in a dish-shaped metal chamber, the edges of which are riveted together.
