To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS WEST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monett, in the county of Barry and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Alarms, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to alarms and more particularly to burglar alarms of that type adapted to be attached to a door or window, and which will be set off by the movement of the door or the window to which it is attached.
An object of my invention is to provide an alarm of this nature which shall have means by which it may be connected to any door or window, said fastening means being adjustable.
A further object of my invention is to provide an alarm of this character which shall have an operating lever adapted to come into contact with the door frame or window sash, which alarm will be released by the movement either of the door or sash, said alarm and operating mechanism being of novel construction.-
A still further object of my invention is to provide an alarm of the above nature which shall be cheaply and easily constructed and being simple can not readily get out of order but which at the same time may be quickly connected to a door or window by an unskilled person.
With the foregoing and other objects in view my invention results in such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views and, in which Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the preferred form of my invention showing it applied to a door. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken through the door and door frame of Fig. 1 looking down upon the alarm edgewise. Fig. 3 is a detailed view showing one end of my improvedattachment. Fig. 4; is a detailed view of a portion of the base plate of the device showing the alarm mechanism. Fig. 5 is a detail side view illustrating the connection of the operating lever with the alarm mechanism, Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view illustrating the operating lever Specification of Letters Patent.

with the alarm mechanism, Fig. 6 is a sectlonal view similar to Fig. 2 showing a modified form of clamping mechanism. Fig. 7 shows another modification of my invention, and Fig. 8 illustrates one form of my device applied to a window frame.
In reducing my invention to practice, I construct a suitable base plate 1 which may be applied in any desired way to a door B which cooperates with the jamb A. Erected upon the base plate 1 is a rack bar 2, this being clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Between the rack bar 2 and one end of the plate before mentioned is a leading screw 3, this screw being journaled in the plate 1 in any desired manner or supported thereon, the other end of said screw being provided with a thumb nut or handle 4i. An angularly bent clamping plate 5 having an aperture 6 therein, through which is adapted to pass the rack bar 2, is operable upon the leading screw 3 through the medium of a nut 7 connected to said clamping plate and in screw threaded engagement with a headscrew. The plate is adapted to pass around the edges of the door between said door and the j amb A and has an inwardly turned end 8, adapted to contact said door upon the side opposite to that on which the alarm is connected. The end of the clamping plate 5 is slotted as at 9 and extending through this slot, is a tubular rod 10 in the end of which is received an angular operating arm or lever 11 which is adapted to be positioned against the jamb A when the door is closed. The tubular rod 10 is journaled in suitable brackets or straps 12 carried by the base plate 1. In the other end of said rod is a member having an upturned angle arm or end 13, which upturned end is adapted to engage a laterally extending arm 14 carried by a rockable or partially rotatable shaft or movable device 15 near the other end of the base plate 1. Said tube 10 and angle arms 11 and 13 form what might be termed, the actuating device of the alarm mechanism. Said shaft 15 is a portion of a clock work mechanism which will be hereinafter described, and said shaft carries an escapement member or tappet having escapement claws 16 and a clapper 17 both of which are of the usual construction. The tappet is operated through the medium of an escapement wheel 18, which is mounted upon a suitable shaft which shaft also carries a pinion 19 as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4:. The pinion is in turn operated by a gear 20, said gear being controlled and rotated by a clock spring 21, one endof which is connected to the bar 22 upon which a suitable casing may be supported, the other end being fixed to the shaft 23 upon which is carried said gear 20. Said shaft also carries a ratchet wheel 24 which is pawl controlled in a well known manner. The shaft 23 furnishes a medium through which the spring 21 may be wound and said. shaft also carries the bell .25, and the thumb nut 26 which serves a double purpose of holding the bell in place and also permits'the shaft 28 to be easily rotated by the fingers. The foregoing is the preferred form'of my invention. It will be seen-that the thumb screw 4 is turned so as to adjust the clamping plate 5 in order to adapt it to pass over the swinging edge of a door of any thickness. The clamping plate should not be 1 made of such heavy material as to cause the door to bind in any way when shut.
The toothed 'rack 2 furnishes means for guiding the end of the clamping plate 5 epposite to the end'just mentioned and permits the clamping plate to be readily adjusted and fastened in any desired position. When the door, is closed and the thumb screw 4 adjusted so as to-hold the device firmly in place,it' will be noted that the lever 11 abuts against thedoor jamb and is nearly in a vertical position as seen in Fig. 3. In this position the upturned andis is in contact with the arm 14; which through the medium of the associated parts maintains the spring 21 which has beenpreviously wound from unwinding, so as to prevent the alarm mechanism from operating. As soon asthe door is swung inwardly a slight distance, end 18 40' disengages arm 14' and spring 21 thereupon unwinds, causing the end of the lever 11 to turn to a slight extend to the dotted line po- .sition in F ig.; 3,: and thereafter permitting I actuation of the clapper 17 to ring the bell,
thus sounding the alarm. The fact will be appreciated that buta very slight movement of the door is necessary to cause the actuation of the alarm. r InQFig. 6 I show a modification of my clamping means. However where the alarm is used in connection with a window, the operating lever must be bent angularly as shown at 28 in order to bring it into contact with the window pane. The means of operation is the same in each case.
A still further modification of my invention is illustrated in Fig. 7, in which the base plate 1 is provided with spaced apart apertures 29 through which are inserted screw eyes 30 which may be passed into the door or the window frame so as to hold the alarm in place.
I find it preferable to insert some material between the base plate 1 and the door or window frame, in order to prevent the latter 'from being marred. In Figs. 2 and 6 I have shown resilient cushions 31 but it will be uning the same purpose may be employed if desired, such for instance as felt or the like.
I desire it to be understood that slight changes in the construction and in the ar rangement and combination of the several parts may be'resorted to without departing from the spirit of myinvention, provided such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
