|mpr0vem e nt I No. 118,765 w UNITED STATES JUNIUS F. WHITING AND ELAM FISHER, OF EATON, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN SCHOOL-DESKS AND SEATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,765, dated September 5, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J UNIUS F. VVHITING an ELAM FISHER, of Eaton, in the county of Preble and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in School-Seats and Desks; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawin g and to the letters of reference marked thereon which forms a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a combined schooldesk and seat, as will be hereinafter described.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its c011- struction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side view, showing the desk open for use. Fig.2 is a similar view, showing it folded. Fig. 3 is an inside view of the standard. Fig. 4 is a rear view of the desk, and Figs. 5 and 6 are views of the desk-board and leaf.
A is the arm-brace, which is fastened to the arm 13 by means of a bolt. A and B are both attached to the standards, B operating on apivot and A in an elongated slot or groove. 0 (J are the lugs by which the standard-brace X is fastened to the casting. D is the permanent part of the desk-board fastened to the standards by means of screws, and to which is attached, by means of the hinges s s, the leaf E, which is supported in its position, when raised, by the slides F F. G is the back, which may be divided in pieces, and is fastened by screws to the standards Y Y. H, I, and J are the seat-boards, which may be divided into pieces, and are fastened by screws to the arms B. K is the place for the book-shelf. L L are the bolt-holes by which the standardbrace is fastened to L L in the standards. M M are the bolt-holes through which the bolts M pass and fasten the arm B to the armbrace A and the standard, and which said boltholes may be changed for the pm'pose of lowerin g or elevating the seat. N is the bolt-hole through which the bolt N passes and fastens the arm-brace A to the standard. 0 is a rub her that may be fastened to the back of the seat to prevent noise. P is the slotted end of the arm-brace A, carrying the pin which slides in the elongated groove W or slot in the standards. It R are the clamps which hold the slides F F in place. Suitable pieces of rubber are used to prevent noise is closing the leaf. U is a thumband-finger piece, for the purpose of moving the the slides F F.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The within-described combined school-desk and seat, consisting of standards Y Y, arms B B, arm-braces A A, top D, semicircular brace X, foldingleaf E, and slides F F, all arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
