Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 29, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES A. CHAN- NELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mop-Heads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and GXflCtClG- scription of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved form of mop head adapted to receive thereon the well known fabric mop, such as the O-Gedar type, that is one wherein the fabric is provided with a hem or channel through which a wire extends to clamp the fabric into a suitable groove around the mop head.
It is an object of this invention to construct a mop head wherein certain parts are hingedly mounted to permit the same to be swung out of alinement with one another for easy attachment of a mop to, or removal from, the mop head.
It is also an object ofthis invention to construct a mop head wherein certain parts are adjustably mounted, 'so that the mop may be easily removed from, or attached upon, the mop head, as the case may be, and when the parts are moved into normal alined position the insertion of a handle into the device, together with latching means provided for the purpose, acts to securely lock the parts in such position.
It is also an object of this invention to construct a device comprising a base portion of a mop head having a segment hingedly connected thereto, adapting the segment to be swung out of the plane of the baseportion to permit removal of the mop therefrom, and with latching means associated with the base portion and said movable segment to hold said segment in alined position with the base portion of the mop head.
It is also an object of this invention to construct a device, one portion of which is adjustably connected to the other, and associated therewith in a manner whereby insertion of a handle into the device serves to lock said adjustable portion in proper operating position.
It is furthermore an object of this inven tion to construct a device wherein a hinged portion is held in normal position for use by latching means, and also by means of a handle inserted into the device.
It is finally an object of this invention to construct an extremely durable stamped metal mop head consisting of few parts, ingeniously associated with one another to permit easy adjustment and locking thereof for the purpose of removing or attaching a mop thereto, as the case may be. I
The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a top plan View of a mop head embodying the principles of my invention with a part of the fabric attached thereto, shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a central section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig.
' 2, with the mop omitted, and with the adjustable segment of the device shown in a position for attaching or removing a mop. Fig. 4. is a view similar to Fig. 2, with the mop omitted, illustrating a modified form of device. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary section taken substantially on line 55 of Fig. 4:. Fig. 6 is a similar fragmentary section taken substantially on line 6-6 of Fig. 2.
As shown in the drawings: The device consists of a sheet of metal stamped to afford a base plate 1, having apertures 2, therein, and formed with a peripheral an;
gled flange 3, extending upwardly there-' around, thus providing an outwardly facing groove. Said base plate and flange, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, form a large segment of a circle, and stamped therethrough adjacent the straight edge of its outline are slots 4. A small segment shaped plate 5, provided with an integral upstanding flange 6, similar to the flange 3, already described, is attached to the base plate 1, through the slots 4, by integral extensions 7 which are bent through said slots, affording a hinge connection. Said segment portions 1 and 5, when assembled and in alined position, form a circular mop head, the respective flanges 3 and 6, registering with one another to afford a continuous peripheral flange. A socket member 8, is rigidly secured upon the base plate 1, in any suitable manner, with the inclined internally threaded socket aperture directed radially of the mop head, and at right angles to the line of hinge connection between the respective sections composing said head. The mop, which is composed of a pluralityof strands of fabric, is denoted by the reference numeral 11, and is provided with a tubular or channeled portion 12, through which a wire or cord 13, extends, which, in the completely assembled condition of the device, holds the channel portion of the mop tightly into the peripheral grooved flange of the, mop head.
In the modification of my device illustrated in Figs. 4:' and 5, a pair of resilient indented members le are secured upon each side of the socket member 8, and are adapted to engage over small projections 15, formed on the side walls of the socket member 9, to releasably hold the respective segments of the mop head in proper alined position.
The operation is as follows: When it is desired to attach or remove a mop from the mop head the handle is unscrewedfrom the respective alined socket members 8 and 9, and the hingedly connected bail is swung upwardly out of engagement with the socket member 8. This permits the small segment 5, to swing downwardly with respect to the main base plate 1, of the mop head, thus relieving the tension on the cord or wire 13, and permitting the mop to be detached from the flange of the device. Of course when it is desired to attach the mop, the operation is exactly similar except that the reverse procedure takes place, that is the mop is loosely engaged in the groove of the main portion 1, and the groove of the small hinged portion 5, which is in a lowered ad justed position, and upon elevating the hinged section'into alinement with the main portion, tension is exerted on the wire within the mop, and themop is then held se-' curely upon the mop head.
7 It is obvious that any latching means other than the yoke 10, or the sprin members 14, may be provided for releasa ly retaining the respective mop head segments in locked, relation, and it is also obvious that they may even be dispensed with and merely hingedly connected the handle or the wire 13, used to hold the same thus positioned with respectto one another. r
I am aware-that various details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention. I therefore do not pur pose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
, I claim as my invention:
1. A sectional mop head comprising members movably connected to one another, adapted when in register to receive a mop therearound,.and cooperative means on said members adapted to receive a handle inserted therein acting to maintain said members in alinement with one another.
2. In a device of the class described sections, registering flanges on each thereof adapted to receive a mop attached therearound, a handle socket on each of said sections, and means locking said sockets and sections in registeringposition. o
8. In a deviceof the class described a plurality of hingedly connected sections adapted when in register to hold a mop securely attached thereon, and when out of register to permit release of the mop therefrom, and registering means on eachthereof adapted to receive a handle therethrough, said handle acting to hold said sections in register with one another. o r
4. In a device of the class described a plurality of sections, means connecting the same together, registering socket members on each of said sections adapted to receive a handle therethrough to lock said sections together, and auxiliary means adapted to lock said sections together independently of said handle.
5. In a device of the class described hingedly connected sections, registering flangeson each thereof, said flanges adapted to receive aimop therearound, said mop acting to hold said sections in registering position.
6. In a device of the class described a mop head comprising a plurality of sections, projecting means on each of said sections adapted to register with one another to receive a mop therearound to hold'the mop attached thereto, and means attaching a mop' on said projecting means of said sections whereby the stress exerted on said project- 8. In a mop head of the class described comprising a segment plate and a section hingedly connected thereto, outwardly grooved peripheral flanges on said segment plate and on said section adapted to register With one another When said section and segment plate are in a certain position, a mop adapted to be attached on said mop head around said flanges and held tightly thereon under tension when said section and segment plate are in register with one another, and means locking said section and segment plate rigidly in register with one another.
9. A mop head comprising a plurality of sections, flanges integrally formed thereon adapted to receive a mop attached therearound, and mechanisms on said sections adapted to receive a mop handle therein for maintaining said sections in a position With said flanges registering With one another to hold the mop attached thereon under tension.
10. As an improvement in mops, a mop head consistingof a plate formed of tWo sections hinged together, each section comprising a bottom and an upstanding marginal flange.
