CQNQBETE POST.
specificat ibn of Letters Patent. Patented J ne 29 1916 Application filed November 16, 1914. Serial No. 872,432.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR P. BAsHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Owensboro, in the county of Daviess and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful. Concrete Post, of which the following is a specification.
One object of the present invention is to provide novel means whereby a fastening device, such as a staple or a nail, Wlll be deflected by direct contact with a concrete body within the contour of a fastening binder embedded directly in the body.
Another object of the invention is to improve the construction of the binder.
It is within the scope of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 shows in front elevation, one form of the invention; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, but showing the fastening element and the part held thereby as added details; Fig. 1 is an elevation showing a modified form of the invention; Fig. 5 is a section On the line 5-5 of Fig. i;
Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 4.
In carrying out the invention, and referring specifically to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, there is provided a concrete body 1. Embedded directly in the concrete body 1 is a fastening binder 2 in the form of a strip. The fastening binder 2 is curved transversely as shown at 3, so that a portion of the binder is disposed out of parallelism with respect to one exterior face t of the body, whereby the binder contacting part 5 of the body will act as a fastening deflector coiiperating with the binder. As shown at 6, the concrete body 1 is extended across the forward edge of the binder. Fastening receiving openings 7 and 8 are formed in the body and are disposed opposite to the binder 2.
The openings may be of circular form, as shown at 7, or they may be elongated as shown at 8. The material which is assempasses into the opening 7, engages the binder contacting part 5 of the body and is deflecied thereby into the binder as shown at 1.
In Figs. 4c, 5 and 6 of the drawing, there is shown a concrete body 12 in which a fastening binder 14 is directly embedded. The fastening binder 14 is in the form of an angle membenand the flanges of this angle member are disposed out of parallelism with one exterior face 15 of the body 12 whereby the binder contacting parts 16 of the body will act as a fastening deflector cooperating with the binder. As shown at 19, the concrete body 12 is extended across the forward edge of the binder 14:. In the body 12 openings 17 are formed, the openings 17 being disposed opposite to the binder 14. The openings 17 lie upon opposite sides of the. line 18 representing the angular forward edge of the binder defined by the diverging flanges thereof. The openings 17 further, preferably lie upon opposite sides of a line extended at right angles to the edge 18.
The fastener 20 may be in the form of a staple straddled across a wire 21, the legs of the staple entering the openings 17 and being deflected by the binder contacting parts 16 of the concrete body 12 into the fastener 20.
In all forms of the invention, the binder, represented by the element 2 in the one instance and by the element 14: in the other instance is penetrable and preferably is fashioned from tarred paper. Although a material other than tar-red paper may be used, tarred paper will be found peculiarly efficient. It does not rust; it does not absorb the moisture out of the concrete; it does not rust the fastener; and it retains a firm hold on the fastener.
The binder is embedded in the concrete body at the time the latter is made and serves to shape the reflecting elements whereby the fasteners'are turned or clenched into the binder. It is to be observed that this clenching of the fastening elements is not brought about by a separate element inserted into the concrete body but is brought about by shaping the concrete body itself to bend or clench the fastening elements.
' fiector codperating with the binder, the concrete body being extended across the forward edge of the binder, and there being a fastening receiving opening in the body and disposed opposite to the binder.
2. In a device of the class described, a concrete body; and a penetrable fastening binder embedded directly in the body, a por tion of the binder being disposed out of parallelism with respect to one exterior face of the body whereby the binder contacting part of the concrete body will act as a fastening deflector cotiperating with the binder; the
binder being fashioned from tarred paper, the body being provided with a fastening receiving opening cotiperating with the binder.
3. In a device of the class described, a concrete body; and a penetrable binder embedded in the body, the binder being in the form of an angle member embodying flanges defining an edge, that portion of the body which lies in front of the flanges being provided with fastening receiving openings coacting with the flanges and located upon opposite sides of said edge.
4. In a device of the class described, a concrete body and a penetrable binder embedded in the body, the binder being in the form of an angle member embodying flanges defining an edge, that portion of the body which lies in front ofthe flanges being provided with fastening receiving openings coacting with the flanges, the openings being located on opposite sides of said edge, and upon opposite sides of a line at right angles to said edge.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature. in the presence of two witnesses.
