Description
UNITED STATES MARVIN OVEN ROYCE, OE EAST CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN MlTER-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,748, dated September 5, 1871.
To all whom it may concern: g
Be it known that I, MARVIN OVEN ROYCE, of East Cambridge, Middlesex county, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Miter-Boxes; and I hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this speciiication.
My invention consists, rst, in hinging the guide to the revolving standard 5 second, in adjustable stops to arrest the revolution of the iudex, and also in other improvements.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a back-side view of my improved lniter-box. Eig. 2 is a top view of the saine. Fig. 3 is an end view. v
In the construction of my improved miterbox the bed A is made of iron, which will not warp or spring. In this bed a socket is made to receive the guide-stand B, which is iitted into said Socket with a perfect joint, so as to revolve with ease. This standard B carries the swivel-guide C, which may be adjusted to any desired angle at pleasure. The bed is provided With a graduated scale, D, and the revolving standard carries an index, E, which shows upon the scale the ex` act distance or number of degrees which the swivel-guide is revolved upon the bed. The index is provided with adjustable stops E for checking the revolution ofthe swivel guide when several cuts ofthe same kind are to be made. The
revolving standard B is fixed or released at pleasure by means of the ca1n-lever G. The swivelguide C, as already mentioned, is hinged to the standard B and swings freely up and down, the distance to which it may fall being` limited by the slotted and adjustable stop H upon the side ofthe standard. By this means, in connection with the adjustable stops I on the back side of the standard B, the distance to which the saw may descend is iixed at pleasure.
The saw being placed in the sliding guide K, and also between the guides L, both ends of the saw are accurately guided. As the cutting proceeds the guide K descends, and the depth of the out is limited by the back of the saw striking against the top of the guides -L and also against the stops I. y
On the bed of the miter-box are two graduated and adjustable guides, M, which may be set to any desired width of molding, at pleasure, by means ofthe thumb-screws N. The 1niter-box is fastened to the bench by means of the clamp O, which is hinged to the box and provided with a set-screw, l), in the usual manner.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. The guide C, when hinged to the revolving standard B, substantially as set forth.
2. The stops F, in combination with the standard B and swivel-guide C, substantially as set forth.Y
MARVIN OVEN ROYCE.
