To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM A. PEEK and W'ALLAoE E. DUNKERLEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Helena in the county of Lewis and Clark and state of Montana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pressure Regulating and Equalizing Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a pressure regulating and equalizing valve for hot water heatin systems, designed for use in the relief pipe extending between the boiler and the expansion tank.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a valve which will operate to hold the pressure in the boiler and system to any desired degree, and which, when such pres sure is exceeded, will open and allow the water to flow to the expansion tank, the valve also operating upon a reduction of pressure in the boiler or system to a degree less than the pressure due to the head of the water in the expansion tank to connect the portions of the system between which the valve is arranged to secure an equalization of pressure.
A further object of the invention is to provide a valve for the purpose described which operates as a combined pressure regulating and equalizing check valve, which may be readily and conveniently cleaned, repaired and adjusted to vary the working pressure, and which is composed of comparatively few parts not liable to easily get out of order.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement or parts herein fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a view in elevation showing the valve arranged in the relief pipe of a hot water heating system. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the valve.
In carrying our invention into practice, we provide a valve casing 1 having internally threaded inlet and discharge ports 2 and 3, respectively, and an intermediate partition 4 provided with a port or passage 5, and sub-dividing the interior of the casing into influx and efflux chambers. The port or passage 5 is controlled by an annular regulating valve 8 having a seat flange 9 movable upwardly against a seat 10 formed upon the partition 4-, and having a depend- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing retaining flange 11 which extends intothe upper end of a conical pressure regulating spring 12, whereby the valve is normally held against its seat. The passage in the downwardly opening pressure regulating valve member 8 is controlled by an upwardly opening equalizing check valve 13 which has a beveled face 1 1 arranged to close against a seat 15 on the said valve member 8, the check valve being provided with a stop boss or lug 16 arranged to abut against the boss or lug 17 on the valve casing whereby the upward movement of the valve member 13 is limited.
The spring 12 seats at its lower end upon a supporting and adjusting head 18 carried by a stem 19 having an externally projecting angular end 20 to receive a wrench or like tool, whereby said stern may be turned or rotate. The stem is threaded as at 21, to engage internal threads on a stufling box 22 having a guide chamber 23 in which the adjusting head moves and having adjacent thereto an annular flange 24 fitting within a groove or recess in a threaded depending portion 25 of the valve casing, whereby the stuffing box is fitted in operative position. A threaded retaining nut 26 engages the threaded portion or extension 25 and the flange 24 and detachably holds the stuffing box in position, the lower end of the stufling box being threaded to receive a gland or packing nut 27 retaining suitable packing 28, whereby leakage of water is prevented.
The valve is arranged in practice between the sections 29 and 30 of the relief pipe of a hot water heating system, the section 29 constituting a pressure pipe leading from the boiler and the section 30, a relief and equalizing pipe leading to the expansion tank, between which pipes the valve 1 is arranged. In the pipes cut-off valves 31 are also placed on opposite sides of the pressure regulating and equalizing valve 1, so that when it is desired to clean or repair the valve 1 the valves 31 may be closed, whereupon the nut 26 may be removed and the internal parts of the valve disconnected and detached for cleaning, repairs or renewal as occasion may require.
It will be understood. that the valve memher 8 may be adapted by regulating the pressure of the spring to retain any desired pressure within the boiler and system, it being understood that said valve will be held closed by the spring until the determined pressure in the boiler and system is exceeded, whereupon the valve 8 will open under the excess pressure on the boiler side and allow the water to flow to the expansion tank, whereby relief is afforded, the valve however closing after affording such relief in order to maintain the proper working pressure. This pressure may be increased o-rvdiminished by adjusting the tension regulating member 18 up or down to vary the resistance of the spring 12 to the opening movement of the valve, as will be readily understood. 7 V
Then at any time the pressure in the boiler or system is reduced to a degree less than the pressure resulting: from the head of the water in the expansion tank, it will be evident that the Water in the tank will force open the valve member 13 allowing the water to flow from the expansion tank side or section of the relief pipe to the boiler side thereof, by which the pressures on opposite sides of the valve will be equalized and the water permitted to fill up the boiler and system. As soon as the pressure is equalized again, the valve member 13 will close by gravity and the pressure upon the boiler side, thus tending at all times to maintain substantially uniform working pressures and conditions.
