To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN WV. Panrrnxrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belt-Buckles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in belt buckles.

One of the objects of the invention is to provide for maintaining the buckle and belt in proper relation with the band of the trousers or other garment supported thereby so as to prevent the garment from slipping below the belt at-the point where the buckle is applied.

Another object of the invention is to provide, in a buckle of the quick detachable type, means for readily and quickly releasing the clamping lever for the buckle end of the belt.

Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the buckle. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. 4% is a section on the line 44: of Fig. 2, showing, however, the buckle and free ends of the belt in position therein.

There is illustrated in the drawings a buckle of the quick detachable type; that is, a buckle which has means for attaching the buckle-end of the belt in such a way that itcan be readily disconnected from the buckle for the purpose of shortening the belt.

In the drawings, 1 represents the main frame of the buckle, to one end of which is pivotally connected a main clamping lever 2, having a convex clamping flange or pro jection 3 for clamping the free end i of the belt. The free end of this main clamping lever 2 has pivotally connected therewith an auxiliary clamping lever 5 having a series of teeth 6 arranged in line with the pivotal point thereof for the purpose of clamping the buckle end 7 of the belt.

The arrangement thus far described is one which is well known in the art and illustrates one type of buckle to which my improvement has been applied, although the improvement is especially applicable in one respect to this particular type of buckle.

My improvement consists in providing a tongue 8, preferably integrally formed with the auxiliary clamping lever 5. Thistongue is connected to the free edge of the lever, centrally the width thereof, and is bent rearwardly and thence in a direction parallel with the plane of the lever but spaced therefrom and has its free end provided with an upwardly extending projection 9. One of the purposes of this tongue and its projection is to engage the upper button or other form of securing device usually found on trousers waistbands, such as metal keepers, or in the button hole, so as to hold the trousers and belt from slipping up or down relative to each other. This is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 in which it will be seen that the tongue is engaged under a button 10 on the waistband 11, the edge of the garment being inserted between the lever 5 and the tongue 8. By having the tongue arranged centrally of the lever 5, the belt and trousers band will be caused to assume a more correct position relatively to each other. For this particular purpose, the tongue 8 may be applied to other forms of buckles, such as a tongue buckle having a clamping lever for the buckle end of the belt or also to a tongue buckle in which the buckle end of the belt is sewed thereto. A further purpose of this tongue 8 is one which is particularly applicable to the type of buckle shown in the drawings; that is, a buckle which employs a clamping lever for securing the buckle end of the belt. Heretofore, when it is desired to release the buckle end of the belt it has been necessary to employ some tool for prying the auxiliary clamping lever away from clamping position, as the free end of this lever, when in clamping position, lies well within the housing formed by the side walls of the main clamping lever 2. With my improvement,however, when it is desired to release this clamping lever, this can be readily done by pressing upon the free end of the tongue 8, which readily swings the clamping lever 5 about its pivotal point to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. This function of the tongue 8 is also applicable to a device wherein a clamping lever for the buckle end of the belt is ivotally connected to the frame of a tongue buckle, it being common in buckles of this type to pivotally mount the clamping lever proper in a housing which is pivotally connected to the buckle frame.

' 2. in a belt buckle, a buckle frame, means for securing the buckle end of a belt to said frame, separate means for securing the free end of a belt to said frame, a projecting tongue 1n addition to said securing means for securing the free end of a belt thereto, a clamping lever connected with said frame 1 for securing the buckle end to said belt, a tongue connected with the free end of said lever for securing the free end of a belt thereto, an auxiliary clamp ng lever connected with said main clamping lever for securing the buckle end of said belt, and a ton ue connected with the free end of said auxiliary clampmg lever and extendlng 1n a plane parallel therewith but spaced apart therefrom, and an upwardly extending projection on the free endof said tongue.
