WIRE-HOOP FASTENER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARTIN MoVoY, citizen of the United States, resident of Minneapolis, county of Hennepin, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ire-Hoop Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive device by means of which a wire can be tightened around a pail, tub, or similar receptacle and locked thereon.

Other objects of the invention will appear from the following detailed description.

The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described .and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a table, illustrating the preferred manner of mounting my wire hoop fastening device thereon, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is a detail side view of the clamp and cutter, Fig. 4 is a detail side view taken on the opposite side from the View shown in Fig. 8, Fig. 5 is a front view of the device ready for use, Fig. 6 is a similar view, partially in section, showing the wire cut off and the ends bent, ready for clamping the wire around the pail, Fig. 7 is a view, similar to Fig. 6, showing the wire put under tension and the ends in position to be twisted to form a lock, Fig. 8 is a sectional view on the line g of Fig. 7,

In the drawing, 2 represents a suitable,

bench or table, having an upright post 3 mounted thereon.

4 is a bar mounted on the post 3 and proj ecting horizontally therefrom over the forward edge of the table.

5 is a depending rod or hanger having a crosshead 6 at its upper end that is slidable on the bar 4 and may be moved back and forth thereon. At the lower end of the rod 5 is a reduced extension 6. Loosely mounted or swiveled on this extension is a plate 7 adapted to oscillate in a horizontal plane and having a depending part 8 terminating in an upward extension 9 that is spaced from the part 8. Pivoted at 10 between the parts 8 and 9 is a bar 11 having a handle 12 at its Specification of Letters Patent.

outer end. The bar 11 is provided with a recess 13 near its pivot and also with a cutting and bending edge 14. The downwardly turned portion 8 of the plate 7 has a slot 15 therein and the upwardly turned end portion 9 is provided with a similar slot 16 in alinement substantially with the slot 15 and provided with a cutting edge 17. On the opposite side of the rod 5 the plate 7 has a pivoted connection at 18 for alever 19. The

lower end of this lever is provided with a downwardly extending portion 20 terminating in an upwardly extending part 31 corresponding substantially to the parts 8 and 9 of the plate 7 and also spaced apart. Pivoted at 22 between the

20 and 21 is a bar 23 having a handle 24. Near this pivot in the bar 23 is a recess 25 and a bending edge 25. The part 20 is also provided with a slot 26. A pin 27 is provided in the lower end of the extension 6 for holding the plate 7 in place thereon. The

11 and 23 and the parts cooperating therewith form the jaws or clamps in. which the ends of the hoop are gripped and held.

Mounted on the table 2 and projecting outwardly therefrom, parallel substantially with the bar 4, is a bracket 28 adapted. to receive a pail 29 having annular grooves 30 formed therein extending transversely of the staves entirely around the pail. A reel 32 is preferably mounted on the table, adapted to support a coil of wire within convenient reach of'the operator standing in front of the pail.

The operation of the device is as follows: A pail is placed on the bracket 28 and the operator, picking up the end of the wire 31, fits it within the groove in the pail and turns the pail around until the wire completely encircles it. The loose end of the wire is pushed into the slot 26 and the bar 23 is depressed. The edge 25 will force the wire into the recess 25 and clamp it securely. A similar operation is performed by the bar 11, except that the

14 and 17 operate to sever the wire from the coil on the reel. The ends of the hoop now being clamped securely, the lever 19 is pressed toward the rod 5, thereby drawing the hoop into the groove in the pail and putting it under tension, as indicated in Fig. 7. When the hoop has been properly tensioned, the jaws are reversed on the supporting hangerby rotating the plate 7 thereon, and this reversal of the jaws operates to twist the ends of the hoop together, as shown in Fig. 9. This reversal of the device will form

32 and 33 in the ends of the hoop. W hen the ends have been twisted together, the bars are released and returned to their normal position. The bent ends of the hoop at the extremities of the loops 32 and are then driven into the wood to bring the loops down substantially flush with the wall of the tub or pail and hold the interlocked ends of the hoop firmly in position. The device may then be moved on its support to another part of the pail and the operation described repeated.

While I have shown the application of my invention to a pail, it will be understood that it can be used with equally good results in applying the hoops to a tub or other receptacle.

In various ways the details of construction herein shown and described may he modified and still be within the scope of my invention.

1 claim as my invention:

1. A wire hoop fastener comprising a hanger, a clamp having jaws adapted to receive the ends of a hoop, one of said jaws having a severing means, said jaws having means for bending the ends of the hoop and swiveled on said hanger for reversal thereon to twist the crossed ends of the hoop together.

2. A wire hoop fastener comprising a hanger, jaws swiveled thereon and having means for severing a wire hoop and clamping and bending the ends thereof, one of said jaws being mounted for stretching or tensioning the hoop, said jaws when rotated twisting the crossed ends of the hoop to lock them together.

3. A hoop fastener comprising a hanger, jaws mounted rotation and provided with a hoopforming means, one of said jaws being mounted for tensioning the hoop, the rotation of said jaws twisting the crossed ends of the hoop together.

4;. A wire hoop fastener comprising a hanger having a horizontal movement, jaws carried by said hanger and having means for clamping and bending the ends of the wire hoop, one of said jaws having means for stretching or tensioning the hoop and said jaws being capable of rotation for twisting the crossed ends of the hoop together, the

movement of said hanger permitting the adjustment of said fastening device from one operating point to another.

A wire hoop fastener comprising hanger, a plate swiveled thereon, a clamping and severing jaw for one end of the hoop mounted in said plate, a lever pivoted on said plate, a second jaw carried by said lever and having means for clamping the other end of the hoop therein, the movement of said lever in one direction operating to separate said jaws and tension the hoop.

6. A hoop fastener comprising jaws hav ing means for clamping and bending the crossed ends of a hoop, one of said aws having a severing means and the other aw having means mounted to swing said other jaw away from said first-named jaw for clamping the hoop so formed around a pail or like article, said jaws being mounted for reversal in position to twist the crossed ends of the hoop together.

7. A hoop fastener comprising jaws having means for clamping the crossed ends of a hoop and bending the extremities of said ends, and means for swinging the clamping means at one end of the hoop away from the clamping means at the other end of the hoop to tension it around a pail or like article.

9. A hoop fastener comprising a support for a pail or like article, a hanger suspended above said support, and jawsswiveled on said hanger and having means for hendi the ends of the hoop and tensioning the same, said jaws oscillating on their pivot on said hanger to interlock said ends with one an other.
