FOLDING mourns-TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
7 Application filed October 29, 1915. Serial No. 58,653.
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK KoHNE, a citizenof the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Ironing- Tablcs, of which the following is a specification. 1
This invention relates to an ironing table of the foldable type which may be connected with a support when the foldable leg of the table is moved to a vertical position. The primary object of-the invention is to provide an ironing table with converging bars which serve to attach the table to a support, the clamping ends of the bars being spread apart and caused to engage with .theside walls of notches in the support 1 adjacent the side edges of the bars to prevent movement of the table when the supporting leg of the table is moved to a vertical position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a bar actuating leg provided with a recess, the side walls of which engage the sides of the converging clamping bars and maintain the ends of said bars distant from the clamping portions thereon, in contact when the bar actuating leg is moved to a vertical position.
A further object of the invention is to provide the bar actuating leg with a recess in which are disposed the converging portions of the clamping bars, said recess having beveled side walls adapted to engage with the sides of the bars and move the ends of the bars disposed in the recess in contacting relation.
With the above and other objects in view, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of the improved ironing table constructed in accordance with the invention, the clamping bar actuating leg of the table being shown in a folded position. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View on the line 22 of Fig. 1 showing the bar actuating leg in a raised position. Fig. 3 isa view looking at the underside of the table and showing the same attached to a support, the bar actuating leg of the table being shown partly in section. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4.-4 of Fig. 1.
Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views. m
The ironing table as constructed in accordance with the invention, comprises a top 1,clamping bars 2 and a bar. actuating I leg 3. Rigidly secured to the underside of the top lacljacent the enlarged end thereof is a cleat 4: which extends transversely be? tween the sidewalls of the top 1. The remaining end of :the'top adjacent the small end thereof has secured thereto arcleat 5. The cleat 5v has mounted thereon for rotary movement a lockingmember 6 adaptedto Patented June 13, 191

engage with the bar actuating leg 3 when the same is in a foldedcondition.
Hingedly connected to the top 1 intermediate the cleat 1 and cleat 5 and in .spaced relation thereto is the bar-actuating leg 3,
one end of which isrecessed', as at 7 to provide spaced feet 8 whilethe remaining end of the bar actuating leg 3 is recessed, as at 9, for a purpose which will be hereinafter described. The side walls 10 of the recess 9 are beveled for a portion of their length, as indicated at 11. Extending transversely of and secured to one face of the leg 3 at the end of the leg containing the recess 9 is a bar 12 to which hinges 13 secured'to the top 1 are connected to allow swinging movement of' to provide a chamber 15 in which are disposed the contacting ends of the clamping bars 2, when the leg 3 is in a folded position. The clamping bars 2 are pivoted between their ends to the cleat 1 in spaced relation by means of screws 1 and the ends extending beyond the cleat and toward the larger end of the top provide clamping portions adapted for an engagement with a support when said barsare in clamping position. The remainingend portions of the bar are beveled, as at 16 and 17, the'beveled portions 17 being adapted to abut when the bar actuating leg is moved to a vertical position, while the beveled portions 16 of said bars underlie and contact with the inclined walls 14 of the chamber portion 15 in the leg 3 when the leg is folded so that the end of the leg containing the feet 8 contacts with the table top.
When it is desired to attach the ironing table to a support indicatedby A in Fig. 3 in the drawing and having a depending flange B provided with notches b, a portion of the support is positioned between the clamping ends of the bars and the table top with theclamping ends of the bars dis posed inthe notches b. The locking member 7 is now moved out of contacting engagement with the leg 3 whereupon said leg moves by gravity to a vertical position with the cleat thereon acting as a cam for depressing the portion of the clamping bars disposed within the recess 9.
It will now be seen that the support A is secured between the clamping portions of the bars and a portion of the table top while during the downward movement of the leg 3 the beveled portions 11 of the side walls 10 of the recess 9 have caused the beveled portion 17 adjacent the ends of the clamping bars to be moved into contact so that the clamping portion of the bars will contact with the side walls of the notches in the support A.
With reference to Fig. 3 of the drawing it will be seen that the beveled portions 11 of the side walls 10 of the recess 9 now contact with the sides of the clamping beveled ends of the bars and maintain the bars in contacting relation so that the disengagement of the clamping ends of the clamping bars with the support or the removal of the clamping ends of said bars from within the notches I) will be impossible unless the leg 3 were moved to a folded position.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the simplicity of the device, as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains with out further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is: Y i
In combination, a support having a depending and notched flange, an ironing table provided with pivoted and converging clamping bars adapted to have the clamping portions thereof inserted within the said notches, and means connected with the table and bars and operable to cause the sides of the clamping portions of said bars to engage with the above mentioned notches to prevent longitudinal movement of the table with relation to the support.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK KOHNE.
