IRONING B OARD.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J AMES H. HAnTznLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Linwood, Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Boards, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to ironing boards, and the object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this character whereby the board may be conveniently clamped upon the edge of a table, so as to support the device firmly in position for ironing thereon.

Another object of the invention is to provide improved means for locking the board when applied to a table or like support, so as to prevent accidental loosening thereof.

A still further object of the invention is to provide the leg of the table with a triangular shaped eccentrically connected foot adapted to provide a series of bearing faces whereby the height of the device may be readily adjusted.

With these and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of an ironing board constructed in accordance with the present invention and illustrating the same in applied position upon the edge of a table. Fig. 2 IS a similar view showing the board folded. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the ironing board in position upon a table. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the same taken through the leg 3 directly below the supplemental ironing board 5. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the device showing the same in its folded position.

In the accompanying drawings the numeral 1 designates the main board, which is of any preferred size and. preferably of the usual or common shape. The board 1 has its under face provided with a pair of spaced longitudinally extending cleats or members 2, and the rear end of board is cut away longitudinally a suitable distance adjacent the inner faces of the cleats 2 to provide for the reception of the leg 3. The leg 3 is pivotally secured between the cleats 2 adjacent one of its edges as indicated by the numeral 4. The leg 3 is of a width corresponding to the distance between the walls provided by the slot or cut away portion of the board 1 and is of a Specification of Letters Patent.

slightly lesser thickness than the distance between the cleats 2. The upper portion of the leg 3 is provided with a pivoted supplementaryironing board 5. This board 5 is hingedly connected with the leg 3 as indicated by the numeral, 6, and the board 5 is provided at its rear end with a longitudinally extending cut away portion of a width equaling that of the thickness of the leg 3 which it is adapted to engage. The leg 3 has its inner edge provided with an offset or cleat 7, which is adapted to contact the under face of the board 5 when the board is in operative posi tion, as illustrated in l 1 of the drawings.

The edge of the leg 3 opposite that provided with the cleat or offset 7 is provlded with a beveled recess or cut away portion 8, and this cut away portion is ada ted to engage with the edge of a table, as 0 early illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. When the leg is thus positioned upon the edge of the table, the board 1 is adapted to have its rear upper face engaged with the under face of the table edge, thus securely retaining the device upon the table. In order to provide a rigid connection between the board and table, the leg 3 is provided. with a transverse bar or lip 8, and the under face of the board 1 is pivotally provided with a toothed bar 9 adapted to engage with the offset or lip 8 to firmly compress the board 1 and the cut away portion of the leg 3 upon the edge of the table.

The lower end of the leg 3 is provided with a triangular shaped foot 10. This foot 10 is pivoted eccentrically to the leg 3, to provide three separate bearing faces, each arranged a different distance away from the point of pivot so that by rotating the foot upon its pivot the height of the board may be readily regulated and at the same time a fiat bearing face is provided by the foot.

From the above description, taken in conneeti on with the accompanying drawings, it will be noted that I have provided an extremely simple, cheap and effective foldable ironing board, one which may be easily and quickly attached to the edge of a table and one which may be readily removed therefrom and folded into small compass when not in use.

Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new is:

1. In an ironing board, a board proper having its rear end provided with a longitudinally extending cut away )ortion, spaced cleats extending longitudinally beneath the board and adj acent the edges of the cut away portion, a leg member pivotally connected adjacent one of its edges between the cleats, a lip upon the leg member, a bar pivotally connected to one of the cleats and having one of its faces provided with inclined teeth for engaging the lip of the leg member, said leg member adapted, when in set up position, to extend above the top of the ironing board, said extending portion being provided with an engaging cleat upon its outer face and having its opposite face provided with a recess, a supplementary board having its end provided with a cut away portion adapted to be positioned upon the extension of the leg and to be pivotally connected therewith and to rest upon the cleat, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In an ironing board, a board proper having its rear end provided with a longitudinally extending cut away ortion, spaced cleats extending longitudinal. y beneath the board and adjacent the edges of the cut away portion, a leg member pivotally connected adjacent one of its edges between the cleats, said leg member having its lower extremity provided with an eccentricallypivoted triangular foot, a lip upon the leg member, a bar pivotally connected to one of the cleats and having one of its faces provided with inclined teeth for engaging the lip of the leg member, said leg member adapted, when in set up position, to extend above the top of the ironing board, said extending portion being provided with an engaging cleat upon its outer face and a recess in its innerface, and a supplemental board having its end provided with a cut away portion adapted to be positioned upon the extension of the leg and to be pivotally connected therewith and to rest upon the cleat, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
