Description

P. S. HARVIN.
TOBACCO STRINGER.
APPLICATION FILED AuG.2o, 19|5.

shown PAUL SPARKS HARVIN, OF SUMTER,*SOUTH CAROLINA.
ToBAcco-sncfnrt.
Application filed August 20, 1915.
To all whom it may concern.' 4
Be it known that I, PAUL SPARKS HAnvrN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Sumter, in the county of Sumter and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco- Stringers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had t0 the accompanying drawing.
This vinvention relates to devices for hanging articles separately or in separate bundles or bunches and, more particularly, to devices for hanging tobacco to be cured.
The objects of the invention are to provide a tobacco-Stringer which will permit the tobacco'leaves to be readily placed therein and removed therefrom; to provide a tobaccostringer which will clasp the leaves by the stem without injury t0 the leaves; to provide a tobacco-Stringer which will automatically compensate for the shrinkage of the stems as they dry out, and which, consequently, will not allow the` leaves to fall from the clasp; to provide a simple, cheap and efficient tobacco-Stringer.
lVith these and such other objects in view as may hereinafter more fully appear, my invention consists in the novel arrangement and construction of parts set forth in the following description, more particularly pointed out in the claims, and which are in the accompanying drawings, wherein:-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device, the same being shown broken. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the device showing another form of resilient clip. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the same.
Referring to said drawings by numerals, a stick 1, of any suitable shape and material, is provided with a longitudinal groove in each side thereof. Fastened to each side of the stick 1, in any suitable and convenient manner as by the binding wires 3, are resilient clips. The clips are, preferably, formed of resilient wire bent upon itself to form a Specification of Letters Patent.

double strand, one end of which is bent to form the substantially circular gripping portion 4, adjacent which is a curved shank 5. The strands are then divided and rolled to form the spiral spring 6 from which eX- tends the strand ends 7, the tips 8 of which may be bent to an angle' and driven into the stick 1, as shown most clearly in Fig. 1.
In the modified form shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the 'resilient clips are formed of strips of resilient metal bent topform the substantially circular gripping portion 4 adjacent which is the curved shank 5. The straight portion 7', of the clip, may be fastened to the stick in any suitable way, as by the staples 3, and may have its end 8 bent at an angle and driven into the material of the stick.
As will be readily understood, the stems of the tobacco leaves may be readily placed in or removed froml the' clips by grasping the curved end 4 or 4 of the clip and drawing the same away from the stick 1. As the tobacco dries, the clip, the end of which is allowed to enter the groove 2, will automatically draw closer to the stick 1 and continue to grasp the stems firmly. The chances of injury to the leaves are at a minimum as the same are pressed against a flat surface and there are no sharp edges which could cut the leaves or otherwise injure them.
IHaving described my invention, what I lclaim as new and desire to secure'by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a stick, and a resilient clip carried'by the stick, said clip comprising separate strands engaging the side of the stick, a curved shank, a 'gripping portion at the end of the shank, and a coiled.
spring between the shank and the strands.
2. The combination of a stick provided with a groove, yand a resilient clip secured to said stick, the said resilient clip comprising a curved shank, and a circular gripping portion adapted to enter the groove.
3. The combination of a stick provided with a groove, and a resilient clip carried by the stick, the said clip comprising a straight Silient Clip carried by the stick, the said clip Stick engaging portion, a. curved shank, and the stick, a curved' shank, and :l circular a Circular gripping portion adapted to enter gripping portion, for the purpose Speoiied. 10 the groove. In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my 4. The combination of a stick, and a resignature in the presence of two witnesses. PAUL SPARKS HARVIN. comprising a straight stick engaging porlVitnesses: tion, an angularly disposed end on said por- H. R.' VAN DEVENTER, tion and adapted to enter the material of Joslin PINsoN.
