Description

- FENCE POST.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 29, I914. 1,1 87,280. Patented June 13, 1916.
WILLIAM DODDS, 0F KIT'IANNING, PENNSYLVANIA.
FENCE-POST.
Specification of Letters latent.
Patented June 13, 1916.
Application filed May 29, 1914. Serial No. 841,889.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM Donns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kittanning, in the county of Armstrong and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fence- Posts, of which the following is a specifica= tion.
The invention relates to a fence post, and has for its primary object the provision of a post wherein the longitudinal fence wires or boards after being connected to the said post can be accurately adjusted relative to each other for positioning the same parallel or spaced the required distance from each other.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a post wherein the runner wires or boards of the fence can be quickly and easily fastened thereto or removed therefrom, the post being of novel form to insure strength and longevity.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a post which is simple in construction, reliable and efficient in its purpose, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view,-the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawing :Figure 1 is a side elevati on of a post constructed in accordance with the invention, showing the runner wires at-l tached. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view on an enlarged scale therethrough. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view through the post. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view through the post, showing a slight modification of a fastener for the runner wires.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates the longitudinal runner wires of a fence, which are of the ordinary wellknown construction, B the fasteners therefor, and C the post hereinafter fully described.
The post comprises a body, preferably made from fiat material bent to form a medial rib 10, and laterally extending flanges 11 on opposite sides thereof, the lower end of the body being outwardly tapered to form a pointed tip 12, so that the post can be conveniently driven into the ground for the anchoring of the same in vertical position to support the runner wires of the fence. The rib 10 forms a recess or channel 14: which tapers toward and-opens through one face of the post C between the flanges 11, and passed transversely through this channel 14 are the fasteners B hereinafter fully described. i
Each fastener comprises a shank 15 having a threaded end 16 and a hook 17 at its opposite end, the latter being adapted for detachable engagement with the runner wire A, while adjustably engaged on the threaded end 16 is an ordinary jam nut 18, the same being designed to work against the medial portion of the rib 10 which is formed with an elongated slot 19 longitudinally disposed in the rib and through which is passed the shank 15 of the fastener B so that the latter can be adjusted vertically on the post to position the runner wires A parallel with each other or in spaced relation-to each other.
Surrounding the shank 15 of the fastener 3 contiguous to the hookend 17 thereof is a bearing plate or washer 20 against which rests therunner wire A, the said plate or washer 20 being formed with a slot21 to accommodate the hook end17 of the fastener B so that on the tightening of the nut 18 the hook end 17 of the said fastener will firmly clamp the runner wire and 'frictionally hold the bearing plate or washer 20 against the flanges 11 of the post to prevent the slipping thereof. Of course it is to be understood that in lieu of the runner wires A boards can be substituted for the construction ofthe fence, and any suitable form of fasteners can be employed which may be adaptable for adjustment in the slots 19 in the post.
In Fig. 4 there is shown a slight modifica tion of the fastener wherein the shank 22 is formed with a transverse opening 23 in which is engaged a counter pin 24:, the latter serving to secure the fastener in the post B, which is of a construction identical to the. post hereinbefore described.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of use of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a having the sides disposed in diverging relathereof disposed in said slots and said tion to provide a restricted channel, the'sides channel. 10 of the rib then extending outwardly in op- In testimony whereof I afliX my signature posite directions at right angles to provide in presence of two Witnesses.
