To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ABRAHAM J. says, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Kettle-Cover, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention appertains to kettle covers and relates more particularly to an improvement over the kettle cover disclosed in my Patent No. 850,677 issued April 16, 1907.

This invention contemplates the provision of an adjustable kettle cover having improved details to enhance the utility and efficiency thereof, and whereby the device will be comparatively simple, substantial and inexpensive in construction, as well as being convenient, practical and serviceable in use. 7 M

It is also the object of the invention to provide an adjustable kettle cover of a form which can be most inexpensively manufactured, and the parts of which may be readily assembled and separated for purpose of demonstration and compact storage or shipment, the parts being assembled merely by the use of a hammer. or similar implement.

IVith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In carrying out the present invention the cover is formed from a circular blank or plate of sheet metal 1, which has a central aperture 2, and a radial slot 3 extending from the aperture to the periphery or circumference of the blank or plate 1. The corners between the aperture 2 and slot 3 are cut away as at 4:, wherebythe aperture 2 will be of such form that it will prevent the cover breaking or buckling at the central portion as the cover is expanded and contracted.

In forming the cover from the blank or plate 1, the. edge portions formed by the slot 3, are overlapped, the outer overlapped portion being provided with a tongue or tab 5 projecting from the periphery of the cover and bentback under the inner overlapped portion, to properly guide the overlapped portlons and control the working or action I of the cover when the cover is contracted and expanded.

The outer and inner overlapped portions are provided with wooden knobs 6, which are attached to the cover in a peculiar manner. Thus, the cover is provided with upstruck bosses 7 upon which. the knobs 6 rest, and rivets 8 are engaged through the knobs 6 and the bosses 7, 'to clamp the knobs upon the bosses. The rivets 8].each embody an inner socket section 9 having a head 10 fit ting within the corresponding boss 7 flush with the interior of the cover, and an outer section 11 telescoping into and adapted to bind within the socket section 9, the section 11 having an outer head 12 engaging the outer or upper end of the knob 6. When the sections 9 and 11 of the rivet 8 are clamped together, they will firmly engage each other, to prevent the accidental loosening or detachment of the knob. The heads 10 at the inner ends of the rivets 8 lying within the sockets or counter-sunk portions provided by the upstruck bosses 7, will render the interior of the cover flush, to prevent the wash cloth from catching in the same, when the cover is cleaned or washed. The boss 7 of the outer overlapped portion also enables the head 10 of the corresponding rivet 8 to clear the inner wing or portion of the cover, to avoid scratching'the surface of the under wing or portion.

As will be obvlous, when the cover is in proper form, the same will be of conical shape, with the aperture or opening 2 at its a ex. In order to close the aperture 2, and to properly hold the upper ends ofthe overlapped portions in operative relation, and to prevent the upper ends of the overlapped portions from separating, the following device is employed. A convexed washer or disk 13 is disposed below the apex of the cover, and is provided with a peripheral or circumferential rounded rib 14L bearing upwardly against the apical portion of the cover, and a convexed or cup-shaped washer or disk 15 is mounted over the apical portion of the cover and has its rim or periphery seating upon the apical-portion of the cover above the rib 14. The washer or disk 15 is dished to a greater convexity than the washer or disk 13, whereby a space is provided between the washers or disks 13 and 15 for receiving the apical portion of the cover. The disks or washers 13 and 15 are secured together to clamp the apical portion of the cover between the rims or peripheries of the washers or disks, and to this end a bifurcated rivet 16 is engaged centrally through the Washers or disks 13 and 15 and passes loosely through the aperture 2.

In use, when it is desired to apply the cover to a kettle or other vessel, the knobs 6 are grasped in the hand and moved toward each other, which will contract the cover, so that the cover may readily set Within the mouth of the kettle, and then when the knobs 6 are released, the cover will expand byits own tension, and hold itself firmly in place within the kettle. Conversely, to remove the cover, the knobs 6 are drawn together, to contract the cover, so that the cover may be readily lifted out of the kettle. It is to be noted that the cover in being contractible may be applied to various diameters of kettles, with equal propriety and success.

The upper washer or disk 15 presents a pleasing and neat appearance to the apical portion of the cover, and furthermore, the two disks or Washers l5 and 13 will close the aperture 2, and will also hold the upper ends of the overlapped portions in place, whereby they cannot become separated or improperly displaced as would be liable to cause a leakage,'or a breakage or rupturing of the cover when it is expanded and contracted. The disks or washers 13 and 15 being connected by the rivet 16 will cause the apical portion of the cover to be clamped between the rims or peripheries of the disks or washers, whereby the overlapped portions of the cover will be held snugly in contact with each other, and furthermore, the said disks or washers prevent the inner overlapped portion from moving upwardly, under the outer overlapped portion, as would be liable to break or injuriously bend the cover, and which has not infrequently been a source of Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each,

The central portions of the disks or washers 13 and 15 being spaced apart enables the apical portion of the cover surrounding the aperture 2 to move upwardly and downwardly, as the cover is expanded and contracted. The present device avoids sharp corners, and is of such a construction as to be most inexpensively manufactured, whereby the present device may be inexpensively sold. The parts of the present device may bereadily assembled and disassembled, so that the parts may be attached and taken apart by a demonstrator or other person, with only the use of a hammer or similar implement. The device being of the knockdown type, may be readily disassembled for the purpose of compact storage or shipment. It is also preferable to so form the upper wing or overlapped portion of the cover having the tongue 5, that the intermediate portion thereof tends to bend downward between the respective knob 6 and the center of the cover, to avoid the unsightly gap between the two wings or overlapped portions when the cover is contracted. Thus, when the cover is contracted, should the under wing or portion be bowed downwardly, the downward curvature of the upper wing or portion will fill up the gap.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A kettle cover of conical form having overlapped portions and an aperture at its apex, a convexed washer below the apex of the cover and having a peripheral rounded rib bearing upwardly against the apical portion of the cover, a convexed washer mounted over the apical portion of the cover and having its periphery seating upon said portion above said rib, and a securing element connecting the central portions of the washers and passing through said aperture to clamp the cover between the washers, the convexed sides of the washers being disposed uppermost and the central portions of the washers being spaced from the apical portion of the cover.
