MOLDING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 13,1916,
Application filed January 5, 1916. Serial No. 70,504.
To all whom it may concern:
'Be it known 'that 1, JOHN B. Barns, a .citizen of the United States, residing at Anniston, in the county of Calhoun and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molding Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in molding apparatus and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character wherein a flask is employed and it is an object of the invention to provide an apparatus of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the flask may be applied to or removed from operative position with convenience and facility.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character wherein the flasks when removed may be maintained in superposed relation whereby a plurality of flasks may be employed at one pouring of metal.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved molding apparatus whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. p
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claims. I In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a view in top plan of a molding apparatus constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View taken longitudinally through the device as disclosed in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is horizontal sectional View taken through the device as herein enibodied; Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken transversely through my improved molding apparatus as herein included; Fig. 5 is a view in elevation of the side face of the hinged stripping plate as herein em bodied; Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional view taken through the device as herein disclosed with the flask removed and the movable partsin an open position; and Fig. 7 is a View in perspective, detached, of the flask herein embodied.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes the bottom of a container of predetermined configuration but herein disclosed as rectangular in plan and having extending upwardly adjacent its opposite ends the side walls or .plates 2, and said side plates adjacent their opposite end have disposed across their outer faces the ribs 3, extending beyond the oppositevertical edges of the side plates or walls, the rearwardly extending portion being reinforced by the ribs 4 overlying the outer face of the rear or fixed stripping plate 5.
The stripping plate 5 as herein embodied, is provided with the elongated vertically disposed slots of predetermined configuration, through which the patterns P carried by the inner face of the back plate 6 are adapted to extend, said patterns being herein disclosed as of a type to produce sash Weights.
The back plate 6 as herein disclosed, is prov ded at its upper and lower ends with the oppositely directed lugs adapted to underlie the rearwardly extended portions of the ribs 3 and pivotally engaged as at '8, with one set of vertically alined ribs 3, while the second set of ribs or more particularly the rearward extensions thereof are provided with perforations 9 through which the pins 10 may be disposed to maintain the back plate in closed adjustment.
11 denotes a second stripping plate provided along one vertical margin with the extensions 12 pivotally engaged with the for ward extensions of the adjacent ribs 3, while the opposite or free vertical edge of the second stripping plate 11 is provided with extensions 14 adapted to extend across the forward extensions of the ribs 3 at the side opposite to the hinged connection of the stripping plate 11, and the outer extremities of said last named extensions of the ribs 3 are provided with the perforations 15, through which the locking pins 16 are directed for a purpose which is believed to be the front being provided with the extensions 19 pivotally engaged with the forward extensions of the-first mentioned ribs 3.
The second .stripping plate 11 is also provided with the elongated vertically disposed slots or openings 20 through which extend the patterns P carried by the inner face of the front18.
It is also to be observed that-the inner face of the second stri ping plate 11 is "provided with a pattern whereby means is provided fortthe requisite pouring of the metal.
F denotes the flask which, as herein-disclosed, includes the bottom plate 21, the upstanding side plates 22 and the upper transverse tie plates 23, whereby it is to be noted that the upper end of the flask F is open for the proper application of the sand. At this time it may be well to state that my improved apparatus may be employed in connection with any preferred style of arrlng machine.
One of the side-plates adjacent its opposite ends and at its vertical marginal portions is provided with outstandin lugs 24, one vertical set of lugs being provided with the opening or perforation 25 to receive the inwardly disposed pins 26 carried by the" stripping plate '5, while the second. vertical set of lugs 24 is provided with the outstanding pins 27 for a purpose to be hereinafter more particularly referred to. Both of the side plates. 22 are provided at substantially their transverse centers and intermediate their length, with the elongated ribs 28 which serve as the medium for-the proper manipulation of the flask when removed. A molding apparatusconsisting of a container having its front and back open, swinging closure members for the front and back, said members being provided on their inner faces with patterns, a fixed stripping plate overlying the back of the container and provided with an opening through which the patternof the back closure member extends, a hinged stripping member overlying the front of the container and arranged inwardly of the front closure member, a flask insertible within the container and having its front and rear faces open, lugs "projecting outwardly from a side wall of the flask, certain of said lugs being perforated, and pins carried by the remainder of said lugs.

5. A molding apparatus consisting of a container having its front and back open, swinging closure members for the front and back, said members being provided on their inner faces with patterns, a. fixed stripping plate overlying the-back of the apparatus and provided with an opening through which the pattern of the back closure member extends, and a hinged stripping member overlying the front of the apparatus and arranged inwardly of the front closure member.
6. A molding apparatus consisting of a container having one of its faces open, a swinging closure member for said open face, said member being provided on its inner face with a pattern, and a stripping plate overlying the open face of the container and provided with an opening through which the pattern of the closure member extends.

A molding apparatus consisting of a container having one of its faces" open, a swinging closure member for said open face, said member being provided on its inner face with a pattern, and a stripping plate overlying the open face of the container and provided with an opening through which the pattern of the closure member extends, said stripping plate being capable of movement.
