Description

`lune 21, 1949. N, s, SHUMWAY CONCRETE MOLD Filed July 3, 1946 INVENTOR.
Patented June 21, 1949 NITED STAT ATENT OFFICE CONCRETE MOLD Newell S. Shumway, Phoenix, Ariz.
Application July 3, 1946, Serial No. 681,297
4 Claims. l
This invention pertains to cement molding devices.
More particularly my improvements concern molds for casting irrigation headgates from hydraulic concrete.
Heretofore, headgates have been made partially from concrete and partially from sheet metal. I have found however that they can be made in unit form from concrete, with all parts, including the gate slide ways, made from concrete.
The objects, therefore, are, rst, to provide a mold adapted to form a head on a length of concrete pipe so as to provide an entrance area, a gate face, and slide Ways on each side of the gate face.
A second object is to provide a mold having take-down side piates a contoured 'bottom and slidably removable slot forming elements removable thru one of the side plates; and
A third object is to provide a form box for casting gate heads having a metal base contoured to form a face for a gate head, and a boss for positioning a pipe on which the head is to be formed provided with notches to receive groove forming bars, and a peripheral rabbet adapted to position side plates; together with hinged removable enclosing side plates, and removable groove forming bars.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
I attain the foregoing objects by means of the devices shown in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the assembled mold with a conduit pipe in place, and portions of the sides broken away to show interior construction;
Figure 2, a sectional elevation of the mold and pipe taken substantially on line 2 2, Figure l, with concrete added;
Figure 3, an elevation showing the face of a gate head after being cast in the mold;
Figure 4, a section thereof taken on line 4 4, Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a plan thereof with the gate sectioned substantially in line 5 5, Figure 3;
Figure 6, a front view of a type of gate adapted for use in the head;
Figure 7, a side view thereof; and
Figure 8, a fragmentary view one corner of the mold box showing a side plate locking means.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts in the several views.
In general the mold box 2 is composed of a base plate 3 of aluminum, a removable boxing A and sliding groove forming bars 21 and 28.
The rectangular base plate is contoured by a raised boss l0 to provide a gate face area recess l! adjoined by an outer face forming area or ange I2 on each side and at the bottom. A rabbet I4 is formed around the outer edges of the mold to position the side plate members iii and 26 of the boxing 4. The ends of these members are joined at three corners by exible metal plates ll, and at the fourth corner by a hinge latch I8 having a removable pin I9 as shown in Figure 8. Bevel forming strips 2D are fastened along the upper and lower inside edges of plate members I6.
Side plate member 26 abutting the side of base 3 which forms the top of the head is pierced to receive groove forming at bars 2l and 2B.
The side edges of boss l0 are rabbeted as indicated by numeral 30, Figure 2, to receive the inner half of these bars as shown particularly in Figure 2. The bars, when in position for molding extend along the side edges of the boss I0 with the outer half of their edges protruding outward from each respective edge.
Near the bottom forming ledge of the boss abutments 29 are added to form clearance areas 3| at the bottoms of the edges of the gate face. All edges of the boss may be smoothly rounded or beveled, as desired. Likewise llets may be added.
In use, a pipe 32 is set in the middle of boss lli on a secondary or positioning boss 33.
The sides of the mold are assembled and bars 2'! and 28 inserted into position as shown in Figure 1. The lower end of the pipe is then surrounded by a channel space on both sides and at the back which is to form the bottom of the head 35. This channel is then filled with concrete 36 which is Well tamped and troweled along the top which forms the inner face Ilz of the gate head 35.
After the concrete has set the mold is dissembled by rst removing bars 2l and 28. Then pin i9 is removed to release the side plates it?. These are sprung outward slightly and raised over the top of the pipe 32. After the concrete is cured the head may be removed from base 3 and is ready for use. When cast the head has the form shown in Figures 3, 4 and 5. It is a rectangular block encasing the end of the pipe. The gate face 31 is set back from the outer face 38, and its enclosing sides 39 are provided with grooves 40 adapted to receive the flat gate il shown in Figures 6 and 7.
Having described my invention I wish to be limited only by the following claims.
I claim:
