To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. HOLLO- WAY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Austin, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Coin-Controlled Registering Mechanisms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in coin-controlled registering mechanisms.
One object of the invention is to provide a mechanism which will register the values of coins of various denominations when the same are dropped into the case or bank, and which is comprised of few parts, compactly arranged, and which willnot easily get out of order.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide aregistering mechanism for coins of different value. having register-wheels, the
one in the lower order of which is provided with a ratchet, a manually operable, oscillatabledisk having a pawl carried by the disk and bodily movable thereon, said pawl assuming predetermined positions on the disk in accordance with the values of the coins being registered, whereby the pawl is caused to operatively engage the ratchet and rotate the register-wheel amounts corresponding to the values of the coins.
The invention furthermore consists in the improvements in the parts and devices and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown, described or claimed.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a coin-controlled registering mechanism embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the structure shown in vFig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse, vertical secconstruction. Fig. 7 is a horizontal, sectional view, taken on the line 7'-7 of Fig. 3
and Fig. 8 is a detail, sectional view, taken substantially on the'line 8-8 of Fig. 5.
.thereon a casing or shell 11, the latter being provided in its front face with a window 12 through which the numerals on the register Wheels, hereinafter described, may be seen. Mounted within the outer casing are a plurality of partitions 13, 14 and 15, the partitions 13 and 15 serving as a suitable supporting framework for parts of the mechanism. Mounted in said partitions 13'and 15 and extending through the intermediate partition 14 and out through the shell 11, is an oscillatable-shaft 16, to the outer end of which is secured a small hand Wheel 17, by means of which the values of the coins are registered, as hereinafter described. Loosely mounted on the shaft 16 and intermediate the partitions 13 and 14, are a pair of register-Wheels 18 and 19, the former being provided with a gear 20, and the latter having a peripheral ratchet 21 and an annular slotted as at 28 to slide over the hub- 24.
The plate .27 at its upper end is provided with a supporting shelf 29 on which the coins are caught and rest as the same are dropped through a slot 30 in the upper face of the shell 1, the coins being deflected as they fall through the slot by means of an offset ledge 31 formed in the partition 14, to thereby properly position the coins on the shelf 29.
The plate 27 is normally held in the position shown in Fig. 3, by means of coiledspring 32, secured at one end to a projection 33 'on the plate 27, and at its other end to a projection 34 on the disk 23. Pivotally mounted on the plate 27 in struck-up lugs 35 is a pawl 36, having an active bent end 37 extending through a cut-out portion 28 in the disk 23 and normally pressed against the partition plate 14, as by means of coiled spring 39 positioned between the tail piece of the pawl and the slide plate 27. When the disk 23 is oscillated bymeans of the hand wheel 17 without any coin being dropped through the slot 30, the active end of the pawl will ride over the partition 14 along an inner path and will remain inoperative. lVhen, however, a coin is dropped through the slot onto the shelf 29, and the disk 23 rotated, an offset flange 40'on the disk 23 will engage the coin and carry the same with the disk, and as the movement is continued the coin will engage a cam plate 41, thereby causing the slide plate 27 to be moved against the tension of the spring 32, which in turn will cause the active end of the pawl 36 to travel in a path of a radius greater than that of the path which the active end of said pawl normally traverses, thereby causing the end 37 of the pawl to travel over one of the slots 42, 43, 44, 45, formed in the partition 14. Said slots 42, 44, 43 and 45 are of different lengths and are arranged concentric to the axisof rotation of the shaft 16 and disk 23, and all extend overthe annular ratchet 22 on the registerwheel 19. As soon as the end 37 of the pawl comes into position over one of said slots, it will be immediately projected therethrough and will engage the ratchet 22 and thereby rotate the register-wheel. The different lengths of the slots correspond to the different valuesof the coins being registered, the shorter one, 42, corresponding to a nickel, the slot 43 to a dime, the slot 44 to a quarter and the slot 45 to a fifty cent piece. The end'edges of said slots serve as controlling means which differently determine the duration of the driving action. The plate or partition 14 with its said slots constitutes a preferred form of controlling means for the pawl or pivoted member 36, whereby the duration, and registering value, of its driving action on the registerwheel is determined. The register-wheel 19 is provided with numerals indicating values from zero to a dollar in parts of a nickel, the register-wheel shown in the drawing being provided with three such series of numerals, and for each series, the register wheel 19 is provided with a radially extending arm 46, having two teeth 47 thereon, alinedwith a recess 48 in the periphery 49 of the register-wheel 19. Each time that a dollar has been registered on the wheel 19, the teeth 47 on one of the arms 46 will engage one of the short teeth 50 on a carrying gear 51,
the latter being provided also with a plurality of elongated teeth 52, the latter extending over the periphery 49 of the carrierwheel and normally prevented from rotation thereby except when one of the recesses 48 passes by the gear 51. There are half as many of the elongated teeth 52 as there are of the shorter teeth 50 and they are alined with alternate ones of the teeth 50. As one of the radial arms 46 passes by the gear 51, the latter will be rotated an amount corresponding to two teeth, and said teeth oscillatable about the 53 is provided, which engages a segmental ratchet 54 formed on the disk 23, the pawl being reversed at each end of a complete stroke of the oscillation by means of trips 55, 55 on the disk 23, this pawl and rack acting in a manner well known in this art. In order to prevent overthrow of the register-wheel 19, a spring-actuated pawl 56 is provided which engages with the teeth of the peripheral ratchet 21, and which has also an offset arm 57, movable in the slot 58 formed in the partition 14 and which is engaged by a cam faced extension 59 formed on the disk 23 to positively force the pawl into engagement with the ratchet 21 and thereby also positively terminating the forward stroke of the oscillatable disk 23. In order to prevent coins from falling into the actuating mechanism between the disk 23 and the partition 14 when the bank is turned upside down, the disk 23 is provided with a rib 60 and the partition with another rib 61.
I claim 1. A registering mechanism of the character described comprising, in combination: a manually operable, oscillatable member; a register-wheel having a ratchet; a pivoted member carried by and movable bodily with said first named member, one end of said pivoted member normally having an inner path of travel, a portion of which is concentric to the axis of rotation of the oscillatable member, when no coin is being registered; means, governed by the size of the coin being registered, for causing said end of the pivoted member to travel in paths, portions of which are concentric to said axis of rotation, of greater radii than the radius of said normal path of travel and controlling means for said pivoted member at different distances from the said axis of rotation which differently determine, according to the denomination of the coin, the duration of the register-whee] driving actionof the said pivoted member. I 2. A registeringmechanism of the character described comprising, in combination: a register-wheel having a ratchet; a member same axis as the register-wheel and adapted to carry a coin therewith during a part of an oscillation; a spring-controlled pivoted member having an actuating end and carried by and movable bodily with said first named member; and means, dependent. upon the size of the coin being registered, for causing said actuating end of the pivoted member to travel in paths at different radii from said axis of rotation to engage said ratchet, substan tially as specified.
3. A registering mechanism of the character described comprising, in combination: a register-wheel; an oscillatable member including a disk; a pivoted pawl mounted 011 one side of said disk and bodily movable therewith, said pawl having a bent end .projecting through the disk to the other side thereof and serving as an instrumentality for actuating the register-wheel, the bent end of said pawl being movable back and forth in a plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the disk toward and from said axis and also movable parallel with said axis means, interposed between the pawl and register-wheel, to complete the operative actuating connections from the pawl to the register-wheel; and means, dependent upon the size of the coin being registered, for determining the distance from said axis at which the bent end of the pawl is caused to travel, the amount registered being governed by the position of said bent end'of the pawl during the oscillating movement, substantially as specified.
4. A registering mechanism of the character described comprising, in combination: register-wheels; an oscillatable member including a disk; a pivoted member bodily' movable with and carried by said disk and mounted on one side thereof, said pivoted member having an actuating end movable perpendicular to the axis of the disk and also movable parallel with said axis and adapted to engage with means for rotating one of the register-wheels, said end having an inner normal path of travel when no coin is being registered; and means, when a coin is being registered, for causing said end to travel in a path outside of said normal path of travel to thereby place it in active position, substantially as specified.
' 5. A registering mechanism of the character described comprising, in combination:
a register-wheel having a ratchet; an oscil- Q latable disk; at slidable plate carried by said disk; a pivoted pawl mounted on the plate and bodily movable therewith 'and having an actuating end movable perpendicular to the axis of the disk and also movable parallel with said axis, and means adapted to govern the position of the plate on the disk, when a coin is being registered, whereby said pawl will engage the ratchet to thereby actuate the register-wheel when the plate is displaced from its normal position on the disk, substantially as specified.
6. A registering mechanism of the character described comprising, in combination: a register-wheel having a ratchet a coincarrying member movable in a plane parallel to the plane of the register wheel; a pivoted member mounted on said coin-carrying member and bodily movable thereon toward and from; its axis of rotation; and means for permitting said pivoted member to engage the ratchet and thereby actuate the register-wheel when a coin is being registered, substantially as specified.
7. A registering mechanism of the character described comprising, in combination: a register-wheel having a ratchet on one side thereof;a disk rotatable about an axis coinciding with the axis of the register-wheel; a pawl carried by said disk and bodily movable thereon; a partition interposed between the disk and the ratchet and having slots therein through which the pawl is adapted to project to engage the ratchet when the pawl is moved into alinement with said slots; and means for moving the pawl bodily relatively to the disk when a coin is being registered, substantially as specified.

means whereby the coins respectively shift the said pawl to different positions relative to the register-wheel; according to the size of the coin; pawl controlling means at each of said positions arranged to determine the duration of engagement, according to the denomination of the coin, of the pawl while the coin-carrying member is performing its register-actuating movement, and an actuating shaft forming the axis of rotation of the register-wheel and the axis of oscillation of the coin-carrying member and connected with the latter for turning the same.
13. A coin register-mechanism comprising, in combination: a register-wheel and means for rotating the same; a pawl adapted to be engaged with the rotating means of the register-wheel; means whereby the'coins respectively determine the position of the said pawl prior to its actuation means for actuating the pawl bodily to drive the register-wheel; and a slotted plate interposed between the pawl and the rotating means of the register-wheel, through which slots the pawl passes to act on said rotating .means, the slots of which plate are arranged respectively along" diiferent paths. to be followed by the pawl when in its said different positions, and said slots being of different lengths according to the denominations of the various coins to be registered.
