. invention refers, more specifically, to a type of such mechanism wherein a differentially operative jdevice, such as a coin register adapted for use in registering banks, is actu ated to an extent corresponding to thew d enomination, or more accurately speaking. to the dimensions, of any particular coin' inserted.
One object .of the invention'is to provide a simply constructed coin actuated mechafnism by means of which coins of different denominations may besuccessively inserted, throu h the same coin opening, to actuate a difl rentially operative mechanism, such as a,coinregister, to an extent corresponding with the denominations of-the coins, respectively, inserted. I
Another object of the invention is to so construct the device thatfcoins of different denominations may be inserted in any order or succession, and the: differentially operative device will. be actuated once ,to the proper extent or degree for each such coin, except that for coins of a predetermined value,'for example one cent pieces, the differentially operative device will not be actuated after each such coin-is inserted, but will only be actuated once after a given number of such coins, for example to the value of the coin next higher in value, say a five cent piece, have been inserted.
A further object of the invention is to so combine and coordinate the several parts of the device as to insure efliciency of operation combined with compactness and sightliness of appearance. 1

Referring to the drawings, 10 denotes the cover or casing of my improved coin actuated mechanism, which in the present case has been shown as being embodied in a registering savings bank. Formed in the upper part of thecover 10 is the coin admission slot 11, through "which coins of'various denominationsmay' be successively inserted.
The structure here illustrated is adapted to slot 12, through which the handle 13 of an operating lever, more fully hereinafter described, projects and-in which it may be moved back and forth. The front of the casing is provided with-openings or windows '14, through which the indicating ordinalsonthe register are visible. The base 10 of the casing 10 is provided with a pivoted oor 15 having an upwardly projecting catch or arm 16 designed to be engaged by a pivoted latch 17 under the tension of a spring 18. As will be more fully hereinafter described, the latch 17 is tri pedwhen the bank contains coins of a pre etermined aggregate value, whereby the door 15 is released and the contents of the bank are made accessible;

is a substantially U-shaped supporting frame comprising the base portion 19 and the lateral arms 20 and 21, the former being preferably shorter than the latter. The arms 20 and 21 serve to support the differentially operative device which includes the re ister. wheels 22 and 23, loose on the stud s aft 24, which has its opposite ends bearing in said arms. A spring spider 25, centered on the shaft 24, tends to force the Wheel 23 toward the wheel 22. The Wheel 22 is the units wheel, while the wheel 23 is the tens wheel. In the device shown registration up to ten dollars is provided for, and for each complete revolution of the wheel 22 about the shaft 24, the wheel 23 is moved one step, or the distance represent-- ed by the'space between one ordinal and the next higher ordinal on the wheel 23. Secured to one side of the wheel 22 and concentric with the shaft 24 is a. pinion 26 through the medium of which this. wheel is positively rotated, by means to be described. In order to move the wheel 23 one step at the completion of each revolution of the wheel 22 I- provide the following instrumentalities2- Bearing in the arms 20 and 21 closely ad jacent'the peripheries of the Wheels 22 and 23 near their lower part, is a stud shaft 27, having fixed thereon intermediate its ends a pinion 28 projecting into the space between the inner faces of the wheels 22 and 23. The periphery of the wheel 22, adjacent the ordinals thereon, is smooth and ate point opposite the number is slotted as at 29 to clear the pinion 28, and fixed to the wheel 22 immediately adjacent the slot 29 is a forked stud 30 which is adapted to rotate the pinion 28. The inner face of the wheel 23 is toothed at 31, these teeth meshing with the pinion'28. When the wheel has been revolved, as the result of the insertion of coins, a sufficient extent to have 957 visible through the right hand window 14, the forked stud 30 will just take over one of the teeth of the pinion 28. Upon the next .movement of the wheel 22 thepinion will be rotated,'thereby rotating'the .wheel 23 one step and causing it to show the number next higher the preceding one, through the left handl-wvindow 14.
Supported by clips 32 at one side of the lateral arm 21 and near the top-thereof, is an annular casing 33, peripherally slotted at 34 for the insertion of coins, and again at 35 for the ejection of coins into the interior of the casing 10. One lateral wall of the annular casing is formed by the arm 21 and its other wall (lateral) is provided with an irregularly shaped recess or opening 36 (Fig. 5), for a purpose to bedescribed. Passing approximately centrallffthrough the annular casing, and through the arm 21,
is a stud shaft 36 which serves to pivotally support a cup shaped member 37 (Fig. 7.),
at substantially a rightangle to the plane of the carrier to prevent rearward escape of inserted coins. Rigidly mounted on the stud shaft 36= is an operating lever 47, the operating handle of which rojectsthrough the slot 12 and has hereto ore been designated 13. This op erating lever has its lower edge formed as a toothed segment 48, (Fig.5),which is designed to be engaged, in its back and forth travel, b a two-armed pivoted pawl 49, held against the teeth 48 by the spring 56 secured to the outer face of the arm 21. The
segment 48 is provided with a projection 51 at each end thereof, these projections serving to cant the pawl 49 into the proper position as the lever 47 reaches the end of its rotary travel in either direction. The action of the pawl is'such that the lever 47 must be moved completely to' the end of its path in either direction, before its movement may be reversed. Struck up from the. body-of the lever 47 near its edge 48 is a lug 52, which engages and fits into a recess 53in the cup. 37, whereby the latter is positively moved with the lever 47. The cup 37 is also provided with a struck up lug or spur 54, so arranged to the rear-of the edge 41 of the coin carrier, that as the cup 37 is rotated by the operating lever, the spur 54 engages and pushes against-the edge 41 causing the carrier 38 to participate in the rotary movement of the cup 37 about its pivot 36*.
Pivotally mounted at 55 on the inner face of the cup 37 is a dog 56 under control of a retractile spring 57. having a normal tendency to draw the .dog upwardly. This dog is provided with an elongated slot 59 taking over a pin 60 projecting outwardly from the carrier 38. At its forward end the dog is formed with a toe 61 serving to actuate selective mechanism, more fully hereinafter imaeei described, which causes operation of the difi'erentially operative device or register above referred to.
Loosely mounted for revolution with a sleeve 62, which embraces the stud 36, is a disk 63 provided near its edge with the seg mental, curved, slot 64 through which the actuating movement; when a dime is in-,
serted toe 61 enters slot 66; when one cent is inserted toe 61 enters slot 67; when a nickel is inserted toe 61 enters slot 68, and when a quarter is inserted the toe enters slo't69. Carried likewise by the sleeve 62, forrevolution about the stud 36, is a second selective disk 70 immediately adjacent disk 63 and which disk 70 is operated only when coins of a predetermined denomination, such as one centpieces, are inserted in the mechanism. The disk 70 is -mutilated to provide the engaging surface 71, and the toe 61 is sufficiently long to project beyond theed'ge of the disk 63 through slot 67 and'abut against the surface 71. r
The disk 63 is rovided with an extension v or prolongation (2 at its periphery, and-on this extension is pivotally mounted at 73 a pawl 74 spring pressed into engagement with the teeth of a gear wheel 75 fixed to the stud 36' and by means of the idler 76 designed to rotate the pinion 26 fixed to the wheel 22, to an extent corresponding to the coin inserted. A spring dog or pawl 77 is provided to revent accidental reverse rotation of the arge gear wheel 75.
The disk 70 is rovided with a prolongation or extension 8, upon which is pivotally mounted at 79, a wheel or disk 80 having an upturned edge :81 provided with four undercut grooves 82 inclined toward the differentially operative device. The wheel" 80 is also provided with a-finger 83 projecting from the periphery of said wheel, said finger being designed to pass under and act against the beveled ed e 84 of the extension 72, causing the dog 4 to turn the gear wheel 75 to the extent of one tooth. Secured to the extension 78 of the disk 70 is a spring mm 85 which serves to raise the wheel 80, at each movement of the disk 70, the distance between two grooves 82 and upon each such advance a second spring arm or pawl 86 secured to the arm 21 engages in one of the under cut grooves 82 and holds the wheel in advanced position when the disk 70 returns to initial position. It
will be obvious from the construction just the coin inserted. \Vhen the leverv In the foregoing description of the construction of my device I have indicated, in amore or less general manner, the operation of certain elements and combination of elements which form parts of the invention, and in order to make the operation of the whole mechanism entirely clear, I will now give a detail description thereof, it being understood that the function of the device is to receive coins of various denominations, viz:one cent pieces; five cent pieces or nickels; ten cent pieces or dimes; twentyfive cent pieces or quarters; to register, after the insertion of each of the three large nomination coins referred to, the total amount contained in the device, but as to one cent pieces, to register only after the fifth one cent piece has been inserted, irrespective ofthe order or sequence in which coins of the various denominations are inserted.
Let it be assumed that the bank is empty, and the several parts occupy the positions indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. Assume further that a dime is inserted in the slot 11 and pressed down until the periphery of the coin is justabout flush with the upper edges of the slot 11. B the insertion of the coin, pressure is app ied against the shelf 40, the carrier 38 is depressed and the curved pawl edge 42 thereof engages in one of the teeth 44 of the spring 45. By the depression of the carrier, the dog 56 has been moved about its pivot 55, against the tension of the spring 57 and the toe 61 properl positioned to enter the slot 66 in the se ective disk 63. The operating lever 47 is now moved to the right (direction of Fig. 3), and in this movement the lever and the coin occupy the several positions, respectively, shown in dot-.
carrier 38 and pivoted dog 56 will be rotatedabout the stud 36 as a center, when the lever is moved as suggested. Shortly after the several .parts start their rotary motion the pawl edge 42 releases engagement with the teeth 45, but the carrier 38 is prevented from being drawn back to initial position, by the inserted coin which retains its position between the intact part of the periphery of the casing 33 and the shelf 40 on the carrier. By the continued movement of the lever 47 the toe is caused to enter the slot 66 thereby moving the disk 63 about the stud 36" a suflicient extent to cause the pawl 74 to move the gear wheel two teeth, transmitting a corresponding amount of motion through the idler 76 to the pinion 26. In this movement the wheel 22 is moved to show the numeral 10 in the right hand window 14. When the toe 61 has acted against the slot 66 in the manner described, the coin 46 has just reached the slot 35 and falls out therethrough into the bank casing, thus permitting the carrier 38 to reassuine its initial vertical position. As the lever 47 reaches its extreme forward movement one of the projections 51 strikes, and cants, the two armed pawl 49 and the lever may then be moved back to initial position for another operation. In its return movement, which is effected by hand, the spur 54 strikes the left hand end of the curved slot 74 and returns the disk 63 and appurtenant parts to initial position. It will be understood that the carrier is positively moved by the cup 37, owing to the fact that the lower edge 42 of the carrier projects through a slot in the cup. When nickels and quarters are inserted the action is similar to that above described in connection with a dime, the differences being in the extent of depression of the coin carrier, the different slots acted against by the toe 61 and the different ex tent to which the wheel 75 is moved, it being understood that the latter is moved a distance of one tooth for each five cent value inserted.
\Vhen ,a one cent piece is inserted, the operation of the lever 47, coin carrier 38, dog 56 and toe 61, as well as of the cup 37 is the same as above described in connection with the in serted dime. however, when a cent is inserted the toe 61 hits against the surface of the disk 70, rocking the latter about the stud 36 as a pivot. This rocking movement causes the spring arm 85 to raise the wheel 80 a dis? LDCQ equal to the space between two adjacent grooves 82, and after each such advance the spring arm 86 engages a groove 82, and as the disk is moved back to initial position by the spur 54 acting against its upper edge, the wheel 80 is held in its advanced position by said arm 86. No registering movement is effected, however, until the fifth cent has been inserted, and then the projecting finger 83 acts against the beveled edge 84 of the disk 63, thereby causing the pawl 74 to move the gear wheel one step, which motion is transmitted through the gear train 7(3 26 to the units wheel 22. Upon insertion of a coin' (other than a one cent piece, unless it be the fifth) into the mechanism when the units wheel indicates 95, and suitable operation of the mechanism, the forked stud 30 revolves the pinion 28, moving the wheel 23 one step and causing it to show through the left hand window 14 the number next after the one which was pre cedingly visible.
On the left hand side (Fig. 3 of the 5 bodying therein a slidably mounted'coin' carrier adapted to receive coins of different denomlnations and depressible to an extent delivered thereto, means for temporarily retaining said coin carrier in the position to which it may be depressed by a coin delivered thereto, differentially operative mechanism operable to an extent dependent upon the denomination of a coin delivered to said coin carrier, selective mechanism adapted to assist in the actuation of said diflerentially operative mechanism, and means for rotating said coin carrier to move the same into operative relation with said selective mechanism, whereby said coin carrier is released from said retaining means and in its movement from the latter to the selective mechanism the coin serves to retain the carrier in depressed position.
2. A device of the character described embodying therein a slidably mounted coin carrier adapted to receive coins of different denominations and depressible to an extent corresponding to the denomination of a coin delivered thereto, means for temporarily retaining said coin carrier in the position to which it may be depressed by a coin delivered thereto, differentially operative mechanism operable to an extent dependent upon the denomination of a coin delivered to said coin carrier, selective mechanism adapted to assist in the actuation of said differentially operative mechanism, means depressible with said coin carrier for operatively engaging said selective mechanism, and means for rotating said coin carrier to move the en gaging means depressible therewith into engagement with said selective mechanism, whereby said coin carrier is released from said retaining means and in the movement of the coin carrier away from said retaining means said coin serves to retain the carrier and said engaging means in depressed position.
3. A device of the character described, embodying therein differentially operative mechanism, a depressible rotatably mounted coin carrier, means whereby an inserted coin cooperates in retaining said carrier depressed during part of its rotary travel, selective mechanism embodying a loosely pivoted disk corresponding to the denomination of a coin having graduated slots therein corresponding to the several coins adapted to be delivered to the coin carrier, means governed bysaid selective mechanism for actuating said differentially operative mechanism to an extent dependent upon the denomination of the coin delivered to said carrier.
4. A device of the character-described, embodying therein differentially operative mechanism, a depressible rotatably mounted. coin carrier adapted toreceive coins of dif-.
ferent denominations, means whereby an inserted coin cooperates in retaining said carrier depressed during part of its rotary travel, a pivoted dog movable with said depressible coin carrier, selective mechanism adapted to he engaged by said dog at a point dependent upon the denomination of the coin delivered to said coin carrier, said selective mechanism comprising a loosely pivoted disk having graduated slots therein and means for actuating said differentially operative mechanism to an extent dependent upon the point at which said dog engages said selective mechanism.
5. A device of the character described, embodying therein differentially operative mechanism, a depressible coin carrier, a pivoted dog movable with and slidable on said coin carrier and provided with a projecting toe,"selcctive mechanism comprising a disk having slots adapted to be engaged by said toe, and means for operating said difi'erentially operative mechanism to an extent governed by the position of the slot engaged by said toe.
6. A device of the character described, embodying therein differentially operative mechanism, a' coin carrier adapted to receive coins of different denominations and depressible to an extent dependent upon the denomination of the coin delivered thereto, a pivoted dog depressible with and slidable onsaid coin carrier and having a projecting toe, selective mechanism comprising a disk having a series of slots adapted to be engaged by the toe, means for rotating said carrier to move said toe into the slot determined by the denomination of the coi-n delivered to the carrier, and means for actuating said differentially operative mechanism to an extent dependent upon the position of the slot engaged by said toe.
7. A device of the character described, embodying therein differentially operative mechanism, a depressible rotatably mounted coin carrier adapted to receive coins of different denominations, means whereby an inserted coin cooperates in retaining said carrier depressed during part of its rotary travel, selective mechanism adapted to be actuated to an extent dependent upon the denomination of thecoin delivered to said coin carrier, said selective mechanism comprising a loosely pivoted disk having gradu-l ated slots therein, means for actuating said differentially operative mechanism, and
means carried by said selective mechanism for operating the means adapted to actuate said differentially operative mechanism.
8. A device of the character described, embodying therein differentially operative mechanism, a coin carrier adapted to have coins of difierent denominations delivered thereto and depressible to an extent dependent upon the denomination of the coin delivered thereto, selective mechanism comprising a rotary disk having slots therein corresponding in size and position to the denomination of the several coins adapted to be delivered .to said coin carrier, means carried by said coin carrier and adapted to enter the slots in said disk, means for rotating said coin carrier to move the means carried thereby into the slot in said disk dc 'termined by the denomination of the coin delivered tot he carrier, means whereby an inserted coin cooperates in retaining said carrier' depressed during part of its rotar travel and means operable from said disc [to actuate said differentially operative mechanism to an extent dependent upon the denomination'of the coin delivered to said carnor. a

12. A device of the character described, embodying therein differentially operative mechanism, a coin carrier adapted to receive coins of different denominations and depressible to an extent dependent upon the denomination of the coin delivered thereto, operating means for said differentially operative mechanism, selective means adapted to be actuated through .the agency of said coin carrier, said selective mechanism comprising a loosely pivoted disk having a series of graduated slot-s therein, means carried by said selective means for actuating said operating means each time a coin of a certain denomination is delivered to said coin carrier, additional selective mechanism actuated only when a coin of a predetermined denomination is delivered to said coin carrier, and means carried by said second named selective mechanism for actuating said operating means only after a given number of coins of said predetermined de nomination have been delivered to said coin carrier.

A device of the character described, embodying therein differentially operative mechanism, adepressible coin carrier adapted to receive coins of different denominations, a casing surrounding said coin carrier and having a coin admission slot and a coin emission slot, a pivoted dog movable withand slidable on said coin carr er, selective mechanism comprising a loosely mounted disk having a plurality of slots adapted to be selectively engaged by said dog, means for rotating' said carrier and said dog whereby the latter is moved into one of said slots upon the delivery of a coin to said carrier, and means for operating said differentially operative mechanism to an extent governed bv the position of the slot which said dog enters.
14, A device of the character described, embodying therein a supporting frame ineluding a pair of lateral arms, a cup-shaped member pivotally carried by one of said arms, a coin carrier depressible in said cup by the delivery of a coin thereto, means for temporarily retaining said coin carrier in depressed position, means for rotating said cup and said carrier whereby the latter is released from said retaining means, means whereby the coin delivered to the, carrier acts to retain the same in depressed position after its release from the retaining means and during a part of its rotation and means for operating said differentially operative mechanism to an extent dependent upon the denomination of the coin delivered to said carrier.
15. A device of the character described, embodying therein a supporting frame including a pair of lateral arms, a cup revolubly mounted in one of said arms, a depressible coin carrier reciprocal in and revoluble with said cup, said coin carrier being adaptedto receive coins of different denominations, a dog movable with said coin carrier, said dog having a projecting toe, selective mechanism comprising a disk having a plurality of slots adapted to be selectively engaged by said toe, means for rotating said cup and said carrier whereby said toe is moved into one of said slots, operating means for said differentially operative mechanism, and means carried by said selective mechanism for actuating said operating means to an extent dependent upon the denomination of the coin delivered to said coin carrier.
16. In a device of the character described, the combination with differentially operative mechanism, of operating means therefor, a depressible coin carrier adapted to have coins of different denominations de livered thereto, anioperating lever for notating said coin carrier, selective mechanism adapted to be actuated by the rotation of said coin carrier, said selective mechanism comprising a loosely pivoted disk having a series of graduated concentric slots therein and means carried by said selective mecha nism for actuating said operating means to an extent dependent upon the coin delivered to said coin carrier.
17. In a device of the character described, the combination with a supporting frame comprising a pair of lateral arms, of dif ferentially operative mechanism revolubly mounted between said arms, gearing for operating said differentially operative mechanism, a depressible coin carrier' rotatably supported in one of said arms, selective mechanism adapted to be actuated to an extent dependent upon the denomination of the coin delivered to said coin carrier, and means carried by said selective mechanism for actuating said gearing to an extent dependent upon the denomination of the coin delivered to said coin carrier, said selective tion have been delivered to said coin carrier,-
and a pivotally mounted member movable with said coin carrier and having a projec-- tion adapted to operatively engage both of said selective mechanisms.
19. In a device of the character described, the combination with difierentially operative mechanism, of gearing for operating the same, a depressible coin carrier adapted to receive coins of diflerent denominations, a pivoted dog movable with said coin carrier, a slotted disk adapted to be actuated by said dog to an extent dependent upon the denomination of the coin delivered thereto, and a pawl pivotally carried by said disk an ,1 adapted to move said gearing to an extent determined by the denomination of the coin delivered to thecarrier.
20. In a device of the character described,
the combination with difi'erentially operative mechanism, of a gear train for operating the same, a rotatably mounted depressible coin carrier adapted to receive coins of different denominations, a dog pivotally mounted adjacent said coin carrier and movable therewith, said dog being provided with a projecting toe, a slotted disk adjacent to said coin carrier, means for rotating said coin carrier to move the toe of said dog into one of the slots in said disk, and a pawl carried by said disk and movable upon rotation of said carrier to act against said gearing to an extent dependent upon the denomination of the coin delivered to the carrier.
21. In a device of the character described,
the combination with. differentially operative mechanism, of a gear train for operating the same, a depressible coin carrier adapted to receive coins of different denominations, selective mechanism for coins of certain denominations, said selective mechanism comprising a slotted disk, a pawl carried by said disk for actuating said gear train, a second selective mechanism comprising a slotted disk, and means carried by said second disk for actuatingsaid pawlafter a given number of coins of a pre determined denomination have been delivered to said coin carrier.

In a device of the character described, the combination with diflerentially operative mechanism, of gearing for operating the same, a depressible coin carrier adapted to receive coins of different denominations, selective mechanism adapted to be actuated upon the delivering of coins to said coin carrier, said selective mechanism comprising a disk having a plurality of slots, a dog carried by said coin carrier and having a projecting toe adapted to selectively engage said slots, a second disk having an engaging surface adapted to be engaged by said toe, and a pawl carried by said first named disk and adapted to move said gearing to an extent dependent upon the denomination of the coin delivered to the coin carrier.
In a device of the character described, the combination with differentially operative mechanism, of gearing for operating the same, a depressible coin carrier, a pawl for actuating said gearing, selective mechanism comprising a disk adapted to be actuated upon each delivery of a coin of a predetermined denomination to said coin carrier, and a wheel carried by said disk and having a projection adapted to act against said pawl after the insertion of a given number only of the coins of said predetermined denomination.
