Of said drawings, Figurel a transverse sectional view through a machine of well known type to which this invention has been taken adjacent to one of the banks of numher or special keys. Fig. 7 is a plan view oi the mechanism cooperating with the number keys and showing two banks of said keys in section. Fig. 8 is a detail view of the total manipulative device and mechanism controlled thereby for restoring the total type carriers to normal or zero position. Fig. 9 is a detail view of the mechanism for operating the consecutive numbering device.
Described in general terms the improved machine comprises a plurality of banks of amount keys which control item and total printing type carriers, and a plurality of banks of number keys which control type carriers for listing numbers or other special characters as an accompaniment to the lis ing of totals. When a key of either set is operated, the keys of the remaining set are rendered inoperative. provided for temporarily rendering either set of keys inoperative. T he item and total type carriers are of diilerent diameter and means is provided for imparting a variable throw to an impression mechanism so'as to list upon a record strip the items or totals as may be desired. In the listing of totals, the item type carriers, which are of larger diameter than the total type carriers, are positioned so as not to interfere with the taking of the totals. Mechanism is provided for restoring the total type carriers to normal position as an incident to the listing of the :total and also for operating a. consecutive numbering device. Both the item and total sets of type carriers are provided with duplicate characters so as to record the items and totals thereof upon an inserted slip, as wellas uponl a permanent record St p.-

Cooperating with each of the puvvls is a spring pressed pawl 55% which tends to hold each pawl i its normal or adjusted position. The pawls 32 are pivota-lly mounted upon the transverse rod 3.5, While the pawls 84 are mounted upon a rod 35. l lo transfer mechanism. hes been shown for elements 31 of the grand accumulator, but it is to be understood said elements may be provided with any of the Well known forms of transfer mechanism.
, The number 38, Fig. 6, have, coeperating therewith. actuating segments 3, "which are driven by members in the same manner as the segments 3 which cooperate with amount banks of keys. These segments it cooperating with the number keys drive indicators appeuri' t the front and back oi the machine in identically the same manner as the amount segments. As is intended that these. number keys should simply record and indicate, no disks 2 lere provided for actuating the sub and grand accumulators.
In the particular embodiment of the invention herein shown, the number keys con". trol the type carriers for printing suitable identifying characters as an accompaniment to the listing of totals and in order to prevent the operation of any of the amount keys, suitable interlocking mechanism is provided between the amount and number keys, which will. now be described.
Cooperating With each bank of amount keys 1,- as shown in Fig. t, is a cam plate 3? which .is arranged to be moved downwardly upon the depression of any of the amount keys from one to nine by the pin 38 ot' the depressed key engaging with the incline 39 of the plate 87; At rearward end. the
plate is suitably attached to a cross rod supported at the extreme lower end of arms t0, which in turn fastened at the upper "to move down under the kev oins oi the number ke s 36 so as to prevent the depression of the latter keys. The locking pie tes 4-2, cooperating with the number keys 36 heve inclines 414-.
runnin in an opposite direction from tie inclines 39 of the plates 3?. Fromv this it Will be seen that when one of the number keys 36, is first depressed the plate co operating therewith will be moved rear- 1y and through cross rod 39 carry the 37, coopei mg with the amount banks of keys so to bring the upper lockoi the plates 37 and respectively have radial walls so as to permit the actuation of a key another bank of the to which the depressed key belongs.
Fest to the rock shaft -11 is an upwardly extending arm 4:55 which carries at its upper end a plate 416 having inscribed thereupon the words amount and number, Fig. 7 which Words are brought beneath the opening t7 formed in the cabinet 48 of the matchine so as to indicate the set to which thb operated key belong. The plate 46 is provided with notches es'into which the end of a lock bolt 50 is arranged to be projected when it is desired. to lock for any length of time any section of the key board. The plate so is hcl d its normal positiom as shown in '4", by a coil spring 51, Fig. 6, the ends or" which connected to the cross rod 39 and to a pin 52 projecting from one of the frames the machine.
Cooperating with each bank of number keys 36, is a second plate having inclines 5% with. which the key pins li'l are arranged to cooperate. Upon the depression of one of the number keys, the plate 5r, cooperating therewith will be moved downwardly and an extension 55 of said platewill engage with an arm 56 secured to shaft 57 and rock said shaft in a clockwise direction. As shown ig. 7", there is one of the arms 56 for each of re plates The shaft 57 has secured thereto, directly beneath the amount banks of keys, a plate 58 having a hook portion 59, which hook portion, when a number key is depressed, is'in position to engage with the flip pawls 1'! of the segments 3, cooperating with the amount banks of keys when said segments moved to their almorinal or beyond zero positions by the cross rod 8 as previously described. The object of lately ing these segments 3 coi'ipereting With the amount banks of keys in their abnormal position is to permit the taking of a total as er more :t'ully described.
tionloft the type, carriers in listingitems,
is slightly in advance of the printing posi tion occupied by the total type carriers, which necessitates a variably movable mech anism in order to take impression from both the item and total type carriers, As

This movement is suiiicient to bring the platens 88 end 87 into contact with the total type carriers 69 and the number type carriers 80. it may be well to state here that the total manipulative device 99 con trdl the latching plate 58, as shown in Figs 1, mid in the same manner as previously de :ribed in. connection with the number heys and that said total manipulative device mu y be operated with said number keys independently thereof. It will be recalled that by positioning of the latching plate 58, to engage with the dip pewls 17 the segments 3, cotiperating with the amount banks of keys, the said segments will be latched in their abnormal position, and these segments being connected to the item au'iei's will consequently rotate said fers beyond Zero position to bring away portions adjacent the platens t to interfere Willil tllb taking of one by the platens 8i) and 87 from the tot 1. type carriers 69 and the number typeczu'riers 8 After the total is listed the total manipulativedc ice released, the latch plate 58 is restoredto its normal position by a spring 105, which permits the segments 3 cooperating with the amount banks of keys to return to their normal or zero positions where they are arrested by the zero ireys. it is to be understood that a suite is inking ribbon, not shown, may be in rposedbetween the platens and type mirrors so that the impressions on the record strip and the easily be read. the total is recorded, the accumulating oinions and total type carriers 69 connected thereto, restored to hi normal or zero position by the following described mechanism,
Eruitebly connected to each of the pinions 2'? of the suh-accumulator is c heart-shaped com 10%, 1
A consecutive numbering device, comprising the three type wheels 122 of the samediameter as the total type wheels 69 and the number type wheels are suitably mounted upon the shaft 82. A multi-prong pawl 123, Figs. 3 and 9, carried at, the upper end'by a lever 124, engages with the type wheels,
so as to feed said wheels when the lever 1241 is rocked a proper distance. This lever,.st its lower end, has an elongated slot 125, in which projects a pin 126, extending from the lower rearward end of a centrally pivoted lever 127. The upper end of this lever 127 is provided with an elongated slot 128 into which extends a pin 12%), projecting from the 86/ lnthe listing of items, the platen 86 is not moved a Sufficient distance to carry the pawl 123 in engagement with the next the latter will be easily distinguished from the listed items, but it is to be understood tooth of the units; type wheel 122 of the consecutive numbering device, but upon the printing of totals the platen 86 is given a' movement, which is, suf
