The present invention relates to the equipment of an adding and listing machine for doing what is commonly-termed split work. which meansmulticolumn work with the paper in one position so far as its lat eral adjustment is concerned Grdinarily the so called splitting an adding machine is accomplished by ..er-- rupting or suspendin,- the cooperative action between elements of the printing mechanism. The numeral 291 designates the usual amount keys which operate in the familiar manner to set stops for limiting the descent of the segmental racks 610. 'lhe latter are mounted as usual upon the front ends of levers 611 through a sl t-pin-spring connection to permit one-step movement of any rack relative to its supporting lever and vice versa. Levers 611 carry the usual type plate 618 their rear ends for striking against a roller platen 3 under actuation by hammers 715. Hammer latches or detents 717 normally restrain the hammers as usual, and pawls 718 individually trip said latches provided associated levers 611 have moved far enough to present digital types at the printing line; otherwise tails of the pawls encounter shoulders of the levers and the pawls are rocked thereby so as to miss the latches. The latter however have the usual overlapping tails so that one may trip an-x other from left to right throughout theseries. All of this is old and well known and it need merely be noted at this point that in the normal position of the type carriers the uppermost types, which are the cipher types, are below the printing line and the plates carrying these types are below the paths of movement of the hammer heads so that releaseand discharge of hammers with the type carriers so held would not resuit in any printing. I mention this here because in carrying-out my invention, 1 take advantage of this condition to prevent the printing of ciphers beyond the point of split. The first thing to be noted as to change in form of familiar parts of this machine is that each of the levers 611 near its ront end is formed with an upstanding arm lill having the character of a hook in that its upper extremity is undercut at the rear. Upon one of the cross rods 200 under the keyboard which ordinarily supports the key operated bell cranks 217, there are loosely hung depending pawls 10, one for each hook 611 (see Fig. 9), the laterally turned terminal portions or feet of these pawls being adapted to engage said hooks for the purpose of blocking the usual one-step move- Inent of the levers-611, which movement ould result in bringing the cipher types to the printing line. It will be seen by reference to Fig. 3 that when the handle 14.- has been so thrown rearward, the cam projec tions 13 will have passed so far orward ot the studs that, in the absence of restraining means, the pawls 10 would immediately swing back to normal under the action of their retracting springs 11. However the pawls are caught and held in their forward position by special latching devices, one of which appears in perspective in 7. Referring to the matter of transferring or carrying tens, which in a machine of the character here shown comes about as a re sult of onestep up vard movement of racks 6 .0 (pl iissible by reason of the same connection between these racks and the lovers that provides esthe one-step advance of the latter to set up ciphersyp-special provision is made for preventing any interference with the transfer action on account of the presence of the pawls which, if engaged with the levers though not obstructing the actual transferring rise or" the rack, would prevent restoration of the transferring racks to normal. Thus, in addition to a release of pawls 10 through depression oi the amount keys, they may be released through the rise of racks 610 in effecting transfers. it will be understood. in this connection that when establishing one or more splits in the ordinary uses of an adding machine it is customary to provide leeway ior accumulation of totals one or more orders beyond the highest order of the dillerent divisions into which the machine has been split. in carrying out my invention l: have provided a special device for releasing the type carrying lever of a higher order into which a total may be extended. whenever the rack of such order rises to effect the transfer or carry. Thus I pivot upon the key-stop guide-plates 210 a series of similar bell cranks, a descrip tion of one of which willsuflice for all. it comprises a forwardly extending" arm 22 .lgs. E2 8, 5, and 8) having a laterally turned end portion extending through a slot Ell in one of said guide plates so as to be struck by the rack when the latter rises to effect a transfer; and an upwardly projecting arm 22 which has a laterally turned portion extending in front of a branch of the left side piece of the associated latch bail. The two arms 22 and 22* are united by a transverse portion 22 which works between stop shoulders on one of the plates 210 (Fig. 5) whereby the movement of the bell crank is limited. It will be obvious from the above that when the rack rises and rocks tbebellcranlz, the latter (will displace tie latch yoke and thereby release the asso ciated pawl 10, so that in the next operation of the machine the associated type carrying lever may move downward one step and re store the rack to the normal position, in which it is held by the usual transfer pawl. Referring to the matter of restoring the machine to a normalposition it will be understood that in a series of operations under a split adjustment, some of the type carrlers may remain latched, and in fact this is likely to be the case since ample provision is usually made for extending the totals and so certain type carriers may not be unlatched even as a result of carrying or transfor operations. I provide for the unlatching of any such type carriers by the act 01? throwing forward the handle lei. ' Referring next to the matter of totaling operations, (see Figs. 1, l 1 it will be understood that the totaling system is the familiar one employed in Burroughs ma chines. The numerals 265 and 265 designate respectively the total and subtotal keys which operate through familiar connections to so affect the accumulator controlling devices as to either keep the pinions.

Referring again to the automatic action of the latch yokes when permitted to swing down by reason of the pawl studs 10 riding ed the cam fingers if and into the recessedlatch yoke to latching position,'and other latch yokes to the left will be similarly affected by reason of engagement between thelaterally turned ears 15 of successive latch yokes and shoulders 16*- of neighboring coupleis 16. As to an extreme right hand division of latch yokes which of course would not be adected by the setting of a slide 17, a special spring is provided (see Fig. 8), which spring connects the extreme right hand latch yoke with a fixed stud 25. This spring streets the yokes throughout the entire series when the handle 14 is thrown forward and no slides 17 have been moved rearward so that whetheror not one or more slides have been set for splits before the handle it is swung forward to put the machine in splitting condition, there will be some spring" tension tending to engage the latch yokes with the pawls and acting in aid of the gravity ofthe latch yokes whereby to insure a latching of the pawls in their forward positions. The spring pressure however is so light in any case as to add no apreciable resistance to depression of amount eye when this is to result in displacement oi latch yolzes.
It will be seen that the above described construction is well calculated to carry out the object primarily Stated but it must be understood that this construction is susceptible of considerable modification within the scope of my invention. In a machine of the character described, the combination with manipulative amount-determiningdevices, a prime mover, register wheels, type carriers, racks thereon, the type carriers and racks being relatively movable for setting up'ciphers, and totalizing means; of normally retracted pawls adapted to engage said type carrying levers; a handle-equipped cam structure to act collectively upon said pawls for moving them to engaging position; a series of normally retracted latches adapted upon such movement of said pawls to engage the same and take up positions in operative relation to-the key connections; couplers movably mounted upon said latches respectively, a coupler on one latch engaging the next adjacent latch; one or more handleequipped slides having portions adapted to act upon the couplers to displace the same; and pawl-setting devices carried by the totalizing means and adapted tobe acted upon by other portions of said slides upon extreme movement thereof whereby to move said devices into operative relation with the pawls.
