TOTAL-PRIN TIN G' CASH-REGISTER.
Application filed April 9, 1910. Serial No. 554,399.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HAAKON A. MARTIN, a subject of the King of Norway, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Total- Printing Cash-Registers, of which I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to accounting machines and more particularly to the printing mechanism thereof, and its-principal object is to provide mechanism for printing the total as well as the items upon'a record strip.
Another object of this invention is to provide a plurality of impression means for taking impressions from item and total type carriers, the total impression means being normally inoperative but constructed to be placed in operative condition upon the operation of a total manipulative device.
Another object of the invention is to provide a couple for feeding the record strip,
one member of which is operated to feed the strip when an item is recorded and the other member operated to feed the strip when the total is recorded.
Another object of this invention is to ,provide counters for registering the number of different classes of transactions that may be entered in the machine.
Another object of this invention is to provide novel combined transferring and resetting devices for the registering wheels of the counters.
With these and incidental objects in view, the invention consists in certainnovel features of construction and combinations of parts, the essential elements of which are set forth in appended claims, and a preferred form of embodiment of which is hereinafter described with reference to the drawings which accompany and form part of the specification.

key banks of the machine showing the total v lever and connections for releasing the operating mechanism by the operation of said total lever. Fig. 6 is an end elevation of the operating gearing and lock for the operating mechanism. Fig. 7 is a sectional view taken alongside of the special counters for recording the different classes of transactions entered in the machine. Fig. Sis aview similar to Fig. 7 but looking in the opposite direction. Figs. 9, 10 and 11 are different views of the counter construction showing the actuating, transferring and resetting devices for same.
Described in general terms the machine comprises several banks of manipulative devices which control the diflerential movement of actuating segments or devices, the latter in turn operating the indicating and registering mechanisms. These actuating segments set up item type carriers from which an impression is taken by the further operation of the machine. The registering mechanism is constructed to accumulate the items indicated and recorded, and connected with this registering mechanism or totalizer is a series of total type-carriers from which may be taken an impression whenever desired. The machine is also rovided with a series of counters for recor ing the number of different classes of transactions entered in the machine and these counters are provided with novel combined transferring and resetting devices.
The improvements have been shown ap plied to a machine employing the English monetary system for indicating, totalizing and recording transactions, but it is to be understood that this type of machine has been used simply for the sake of illustration and that any other monetary system may be employed.
Manipulative devices such as keys 1 are arranged in groups or banks and when depressed against the tension of their springs 2 are latched by a detent 3. The operation ofany of these keys 1 elevates its detent 3 and this detent is provided with a stud 4 which engages with the forward end of an arm 5 secured to a shaft 6 so as to rock said shaft. This shaft 6 extends horizontally through the machine and is provided at its right hand end with a rearwardly extending the inner ends of the depressed keys.
arm-7, see Fig. 6,- which has atv its extreme rearward end an upward extension 8 which enters into a recess 9 formed on the outer edge of a disk 10 secured to a gear 11. From this description it will be seen that the gear 11 and an operating handle 12 connected thereto will be locked until one of the keys 1 is depressed' The operating handle 12 is provided with a pinion 13 which meshes with a large gear 14 which in turn-meshes with the gear 11. The gear 11 is secured to one end of a transverse shaft .15 and this gear 11 meshes with a similar gear l6which is secured to the right hand end of a shaft 17 extending horizontally through the machine. Upon the release of the operating handle 12 by the operation of any one of the keys, said handle may be rotated and it will be seen that the shafts 15 and 17 will also be rotated. This shaft 17 has an arm 18 secured thereto, see Fig. 1, and to the free end of this arm is secured one end of a link 19, the other end of said link being attached to the free end of an arm 20 secured to a shaft 21. Upon the rotation of the shaft 17 by the crank handle 12 the shaft 21 will be rocked, and secured to this shaft 21 are segments 22, one' for each bank of keys. These segments, upon the first movement of the shaft 21, will be rocked forwardly and downwardly, and shoulders 23 formed on said segments will be engaged by latches 24 pivoted to actuators 25 of the banks in which keys are depressed. Upon the return movement of the segments 22 the actuators 25 carrying the latches 24 of the banks in which keys are depressed will also be. carried rearwardly distances determined by the value of the keys depressed. These actuators 25- are loosely mounted upon the transverse shaft 21 and are disconnected from the segments 22 by pawls 26 of the latches 24 engaging with This construction is well known in the art and is fully shown and described in thebefore mentioned patent of Cleal and Reinhard.
The actuators 25 are provided with teeth 27 upon their outer edge which mesh with gears 28, these gears in turn meshing with smaller gears 29 secured to indicators 30' which are mounted loosely upon a transverse rod 31. The gears 28 also mesh with gears 32 loosely mounted upon a transverse rod 33 and these gears have secured to their sides, see Fig. 4, smaller gears 34. Adjacent to the gears 34'are similar gears 35 which are connected by sleeves 36 to registering wheels 37 of the totalizer. The gears 34 and 35 are normally disconnected and just previous to the rearward movement of the actuators 25 they are connected by a pinion 38 for each pairof gears 34 and 35 so that the rearward movement of the actuators will be conveyed to the wheels 37 of the totalizer through gears 28, 32, 34, 35, and pinions 38. These pinions 38 are mounted in the upper ends of arms 39 secured to a shaft 40. This shaft 40 has a. downwardly extending arm 41, the lower end of which is connected to the for Ward end of a link 42, the rearward end of the latter being forked so as to straddle the shaft 17. A pin 43 extending from the link 42 projects into a cam groove 44 in a disk 45 secured to the shaft 17 adjacent to the link 42. The shape of the groove 44 in the disk 45 is such that just before the actuators 25 move rearwardly the link 42 will be moved forwardly to carry the pinions 38 into engagement with each pair of gears 34 and 35 to connect them for movement together. The actuators are returned to their normal position at the beginning of each operation of the machine by extensions 46 of the segments 22 which engage with the actuators and thereby carry them to their normal positions. During this movement the pinions 38 are out of mesh with the gears 34 and 35.
The gears 28 are fast to the inner ends of nested sleeves 47 which surround the shaft 15 and the'other ends of said sleeves carry printing segments 48 for recording tems upon a record strip 49, see Figs. 2 and 3. This strip is fed from a supply roll 50 over a platen 51, thence over a second platen 52, the latter for recording the total, as hereafter described, and thence to a storage roll 53. The platen 51 which is for taking impressions from the item type carriers 48 is mounted in a movable frame 54, the latter having extending therefrom a pin 55 which projects into a cam groove 56 of a disk 57 secured to the left hand end of the shaft 15. The shape of the cam groove 56 is such that upon the rotation of the shaft 15 by the operating handle 12, the frame 54 carrying the platen 51 will be first lowered to feed the record strip and ink the type-carriers 48, as hereafter described, and then be raised to take an impressionupon a check strip after which it is lowered to permit the ejection of the check and is finally raised to take an impression upon the record strip 49. The previously mentioned check strip 58 is fed from a suitable supply roll, not shown, between feed and impression rollers 59 and 60, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 and thence over the impression roll-er or platen 51. As previously described, the first elevation of the frame 54 carrying the platen roller 51 will take an impression upon the check strip 58 from the item type carriers 48 and by this movement of the frame 54 a portion of the check strip will be severed so that a check ejector 61 may grip the check and eject it as the platen frame 54 is lowered. A guide plate 54 suitably secured to the frame 54 guides the severed check between the total platen 52 and the total type carriers hereinafter described, and into a ing wheels 73, the end of the shaft 72 suitable check receptacle (not shown) from which it may be removed and handed to the customer as a receipt. Previous to the printing and ejecting of the check an ink pad 62 will be moved into position to ink the adjusted types and then move out of the path of the platen 51. This ink pad 62, see Fig. 3, is carried in the lower end of an arm 64 which is pivotally supported at its upper end in the outer end of an arm 63, loosely mounted upon the outermost one of the nested sleeves 47. This arm 63 is pro-* vided with a collar to which is fastened a sleeve 640. This sleeve has an ear 165 projecting rearwardly therefrom and to which is connected the upper end of a link 66, the lower end of said link being forked to straddle the shaft 17. Extending from this link 66 is a pin 67 which projects into a cam groove 68 formed in a disk 69 secured to said shaft 17 and the shape of this groove is such so as to rock the ink pad to ink the type, previous to the elevation of the platen frame 54 by its cam disk 57.
The operation of the machine so far described is the same as that shown and described in the above mentioned Cleal and Reinhard patent and now will be described the improvements applied to this type of machine, but it is to be understood that these improvements are not to be limited to the particular style of machine to which for illustration they have been shown as applied.
Meshing with each one of the gears 35, see Figs. 1 and 4, is a'similar gear 70 which is fast to the inner end of one of a series of nested sleeves 71, with the exception of the gear 70 in mesh with the gear 35 of the farthings or lowest value wheel which is rigidly secured to a shaft 72 upon which the sleeves 71 are loosely mounted. The three left hand registering wheels 37 shown in Fig. 4, are not actuated directly by the actuators 25 as is the case with the four right hand registering wheels, but are arranged to receive their movement by suitable transfer devices not are well known in the art. These wheels have gears 35 connected thereto and these gears in turn mesh with gears similar to the gears 70 which in turn are connected to the ends of their respective sleeves 71. At their other ends thesleeves 71 and the shaft 72 have secured thereto total printbeing extended and supported by a bracket 74 secured to the printer frame 75.
The total type carriers 73 are inked by a roller 7 6 carried in the lower end of a frame 77 which is pivoted at its upper end as at 78 to a frame 79 loosely pivoted upon the end of the shaft 72. .A spring 80 coiled about the, pivotal point 78 holds the roller in contact with the type of the total type carriers shown, but which 73. Projecting from the frame 79 is a stud 81 which enters into a recess 82 formed in a slide 83. This slide is provided with elongated slots 84 and 85 through which pass the shaft 72 and a stud 86 respectively, the latter projecting from the bracket 74. The
slide is also provided with a cam slot 87 into which projects an anti-friction roller 88 extending from the arm carrying the previously described ink pad arm 64. By reference to Fig. 3 it will be seen that as the arm 64 carrying the roller 88 is rocked downwardly it will cam the slide 83 forwardly and by the stud 81 riding in the recess 82 of said slide rock the frame 79 and thereby the frame 77 carrying the roller 76 to 111k the total type carriers. This roller 76 will be withdrawn from the type of the total type carriers that are in printing position upon the return of the arm 63 carrying the ink pad 62 for the item type carriers.
The total platen 52 previously described is mounted in a bracket 90 secured to the frame 54 carrying the item printing platen 51. Normally the total platen 52 is in such position that when the frame 54 and bracket 90 are elevated the said platen will not contact with the total type carriers 73 but whenever a total is desired to be recorded this platen 52 is slightly elevated relative to the bracket 90 by means hereafter described so that when the frame 54 is ele vated by the cam disk 57 the said platen will contact and take an impression from the total type carriers 73.
A total lever or manipulative device 91 is pivoted upon the side frame of the machine and has projecting therefrom a flange 92 which -normally rests against the outer edge of a lever 93 which is pivoted as at 94 to the side frame of the machine and held in the position shown in Fig. 2 by a coiled spring 95, the ends of which are fastened to an extension 96 of the lever 93 and to a plate 124 hereafter described. This lever 93 is provided with a pin 98 at its upper end which rests against the forward edge of a downwardly extending arm 99 fast upon a rod 100 mounted in the bracket 90. Secured to this rod 100 and extending upwardly therefrom are cam plates 101, only one of which is shown. In depressions 102 ofthese cam plates normally rests the sup porting rod 103 of the platen roller 52. From this it will be seen that when the total lever 91 is pulled downwardly the lever 93 will be rocked rearwardly about its pivotal point 94 and by pin 98 rock the arm 99 man wardly and the cam plates 101 forwardly thereby camming the platen roller 52 upwardly. in recesses 104 of the bracket 90 so that when the said bracket is elevated with the frame 54 the roller 52 will contact with the type carriers 73 to record the total. The arm 99 is provided with a pin 105, which,
when the said arm is rocked rearwardly upon depressing the total lever 91, will be moved in the rear of a flange 106 of a plate 107 secured to the forward end of a bell crank lever 108, see Fig. 5, the latter being pivoted upon the side frame of the machine. Upon the operation of the crank handle. 12, the shaft 17, as previously described, will be rotated and a cam 109 secured thereto will engage with a roller 110 projecting from the upwardly and rearwardly extending portion of the bell crank 108 and rock said bell crank in a clockwise direction thereby carrying the flange 106 in front of the pin 105 soas to prevent the return of the arm 99 and the cam plates 101. The first upward movement of the platen frame 54 under this condition will bring the roller 52 into contact with the total type-carriers 73 to record the total upon the record strip 49. During this upward movement of the platen frame the lever 93 will be released as hereafter described and the pin 105 on the arm 99 will pass above the flange 106 of the plate 107 and be returned toward its normal position by a spring 111, the ends of which are fast to a pin 112 projecting from one of the cam plates 101 and to the side'of the bracket 90. The arm 99 and the cam plates 101 will be prevented from being fully returned to their normal position by the pin 105 on the arm 99 contacting with a second flange 206 of the plate 107. In this position the cam plates 101 still hold the platen roller 52 in position to take an impression from the type-carriers 73. This flange 206 is slightly in advance of the flange 106 so that when the platen frame 54 and the bracket 90 are lowered the pin 105 will pass from behind the flange 206 and in front of the flange 106, thus freeing the arm 99 so that the spring 111 may return said arm and the cam plates 101 to their normal position. From this it will be seen that as the platen'frame 54 and the bracket 90 are raised the second time, as previously described the platen roller 52 will not contact with the total type carriers 73, the supporting rod 103 of said platen roller 52 being then in the depressions 102 of the cam plates 101.
It will be recalled that the operating handle 12 is normally locked, so that to take a total some means must be provided to release said handle. To this end the left hand bank of keys as shown in Fig. 5 is what is known in the art as a divided bank, that is, one in which a key of each division may be depressed during a single operation of the machine. The five upper keys 1 of I this bank represent amounts and the four lower keys 113 different classes of transactions such as no sale, received on account, charge, and paid out. The five upper keys 1 of this bank actuate a detent plate 3 in the same manner as previously described, while key pins 114 of the four lower keys are arranged to be engaged by a detent plate 115 and latched in their depressed positions. These key pins 114 also engage with inclined slots 116 in a segmental plate 117 and elevate said plate. The detent 115 and plate 117 are suitably mounted upon the side frame of the machine and the plate is provided with a rearwardly extending arm 118, which, when the said plate 117 is elevated by the depression of any of the lower four keys, will contact with the arm 5 projecting forwardly from the rod 6 and co'ciperating with this bank of keys, and rock said rod to release the crank handle.
Projecting from the lever 93 is a pin 119 which when said lever is rocked by the operation of the total lever 91 willengage with inclined slots of the detent 115 and plate 117 and elevate said detent and plate in the same manner as the key pins 114. When the lever 91 is fully depressed the detent plate will be returned to its normal position by a spring. 120 and latch lever 93 in its rocked or adjusted position. The elevation of the plate 117 by the pin 119 will, through the arm 118 engaging with the arm 5, rock the rod 6 so as to release the machine in the same manner as if one of the special transaction keys were operated J l The detent 115 is provided with a downwardly extending arm 121 which has projecting therefrom anti-friction roller 122. This roller normally rests in the forward end of an inclined cut away portion 123 of a plate 124 slidably mounted upon the frame work of the machine. At its rear end this plate is provided with an anti-friction roller 125 with which a cam plate 126 secured to the rock shaft 21 engages, upon the oscillation of said shaft, to move said plate124 forwardly and by the incline 123 elevate the detent 115 to release the depressed key 113 or the lever 93 operated by the total lever 91. This divided bank construction is well known in the art and is fully shown and described in Patent No. 897,575 issued to F. H. Bickford, September 1st, 1908, andfor a further description thereof, reference may be made to said patent. a
The next feature of the invention to be describedis the feeding mechanism for the a record strip. This mechanism is constructed so that a greater extent of the strip is fed when the total is recorded than when the items are recorded in order to print the total at the bottom of the listed items.
The supply roll 50 and the storage roll 53 for the record strip are suitably mounted upon the platen frame 54 and adjacent to the storage roll 53 is a ratchet disk 127 loosely mounted upon a stub shaft 128 which also carries the storage roll 53. Attached to the side of the ratchet disk 127 is a pawl 129 which is held into engagement with the teeth of a pinion 130, also loosely mounted upon the stub shaft 128, by a spring 131. Meshing with this pinion 130 is a rack bar 132 secured tothe side of a frame 133, which is provided with an elongated slot 134 through which the stub shaft 128 extends. This frame 133 near its forward edge is also providedwith an elongated slot 135 which near its upper edge has a rearwardly extending recess 136 in which projects a pin .137 extending from an arm 138 suitably secured to the side frame of the machine. By reference to Fig. 2 it will be seen that as the frame 54 is lowered by its cam disk 57 the pinion 130 will be rotated as it travels over the teeth of rack 132 and as said pinion is rotated it- Will also rotate the ratchet disk 137 and the storage roll 53 by the pawl 129. A pawl 139 engages with the teeth of the ratchet disk 127 ,to prevent any retrograde movement of said disk and the storage roll 53. It will be seen by reference to Figs. 2 and 3 that the item type carriers 48 are in the rear of the total type carriers 73 and in order properly to feed the record strip 49 in the taking of a totalso that said total will appear at the bottom of the recorded items additional devices other than those just described must be provided to feed the strip the proper distance. Such devices will now be described.
By the operation of the total lever 91 the lever 93 will be rocked, and extending rear- .wardly from said lever is an arm 140 which is provided with a roller 141 that extends in the upper end of the slot 135 in the frame 133 and this roller 141 will carry the said frame 133 rearwardly with the stub shaft 128 of the storage roll 53 acting as a pivot for said frame. This frame is provided with a recess 142 which passes around a roller 143 projecting from a lever 144 when the frame 133 is rocked rearwardly upon the depressing of thetotal lever 91. The lever 144 carrying the roller 143 is pivoted to the side frame of the machine as at 145 and is provided wit-h a cam slot 146 into which projects a roller 147 extending from the cam plate 126 which is secured to the rock shaft 21. It will be recalled that this rock shaft 21 is rocked in the direction of the arrow, seeFig. 2 during the first part of an operation of the machine and as the roller 147 rides in the cam slot 146 the forward. end of the lever 144 will be elevated carrying with it the frame 133 which, as previously described, has been connected thereto. As this frame 133 is elevated by the rocking of the lever 144, the rack bar 132 will rotate the pinion 130 and by pawl 131 rotate the ratchet disk 127 and the storage roll 53, so as to feed the strip 49 far enough to bring the last recorded item in advance of where the total is to be printed upon the record strip. The return movement of the lever 144 will carry the frame 133 and rack 132 to its normal position. during which movement the pinion 130 will idly rotate about the stub shaft 128, the storage roll 53 carrying the record strip being held in its advanced position by the retaining pawl 139. When the detent 115 is released as previously described, the arm 93 will be returned to its normal position by the spring 95 and through the roller 141 projecting from the arm 140 of the lever 93, the said frame 133 carrying the rack l32 will also be returned to its normal position as shown in Fig. 2.
From the above description it will be seen that the pinion 130 and the rack bar 132 comprise a couple, one member of which, pinion 130, is 'moved to feed the record strip a certain extent, the other member, rack bar 132, being moved ,to feed the strip a greater extent than that fed by the movement of the first mentioned member. It is to be understood that this form of feeding mechanism is not to be limited to total printing machines but may be employed on any machine using a record strip which it is desired to feed variable extents.
During the operation of the machine to record items the pin 143 will pass directly in the rear of a portion of the frame 133 which is out upon an arc of a circle struck from the pivotal point of the frame 144 so that the frame 133 cannot be rocked rearwardly and consequently the total lever 91 will be locked from operation.
It will readily be understood that the feeding mechanism just described, may be employed to advantage in constructions wherein a single set of type carriers-is employed to record both items and totals, and certain of the claims are intended to cover such construct-ions and are not to be limited to the form shown and described. 7
The next feature of the invention to be described is the counters for registering the number of the different classes of transactions and also the total number of all transactions.
Referring now to Figs. 7 and 8 the special counters 148, 149, 150, 151 and 152 represent respectively paid out, charge, received on account, no sale, and the total or customer counter. These counters are mounted in a frame 153 which is" suitably secured to one of the frames of the machine between two of the banks of keys and adjacent to one side of the counter frame 153 is a plate 154 provided with elongated slots 155 through which extend pins 156 secured to the frame of the machine. At its forward edge this plate 154 is provided with inclined slots 157 arranged at different angles and with which cotiperate the key pins 114 of the special transaction keys 113. From the angles of the slots as shown in centrally pivoted arms 159 the rearwardly extending portions of which are arranged to contact upon the opposite sides of a pin 160 projecting from the plate 154. The forwardly extending portion of each arm 159 is upon the opposite side of the pivotal point 158 from that of the rearwardly extending portion of the arms and they are connected at their extreme forward ends by a spring 161, "a pin 162 projecting from one of the sides of the frames 153 limiting the movement of the arms 159 byv the spring 161. From this it will be seen that after the key pins'114 adjust the plate 154 and the keys are released the said plate will be returned to its normal central position by the spring 161 and the arms 159. The differential movement of the plate 154 is imparted to an actuating plate or device 163, see Fig. 8, by a link 164 the upper end of which is connected to the plate 154 at the point where the pin 160 projects therefrom, thelower end of said link 164 being fastened to the rear end of an arm 165, the. forward end of which is secured to one end of a short rod 166 which is mounted in the sides of the frame 153. At its other end the rod 166 has secured thereto an arm 167 similar to the arm 165. The rear end of the arm 167, see Fig. 8, is secured to the lower end of a link 168, the upper end of which is provided with a pin 169 that projects through an-elongated slot 170 of the actuating device 163. This .pin 169 also projects through a circular slot 171 formed in one of the sides of the frame 153, this latter slot acting as a guide for the pin 169. From this it will be seen that any movement of the plate 154 by the key pins 114 will be imparted to the actuating device 163. This actuating device 163 is provided with extensions 17 2 for operating the various special counters. All of these extensions, as will be seen from Fig. 8, are normally out of position to engage with rollers 173 carried by the operating plates 174 of the various special counters with the exception of the projection 172 which co5perates with the roller 173 of the total or customer counter 152, this projection, no matter to what position the actuating device 163 is moved, being always in position to engage with its roller 17 3 when said actuating device 163 is moved forwardly. Theangles of the slots 157 formed in the plate 154 are such that upon the operation of any special key 113 its pin 114 will move said plate and the actuating device so as to bring one of the proj ections 17 2 into coiiperation with the roller 173 of the corresponding counter. The bot- I tom four projections are so located upon the wardly at the beginning of the operation of i the machine by a roller 175 which projects into a cam slot 176 formed in the rearward end of the actuating device or slide 163. This roller 17 5 is carried by the upper end of an arm 177 which is secured to the rock shaft 21. After the slide is returned to its normal position and the special keys 113 are released the readjusting device comprising the arms 159 and the spring 161 will return the said slide 163 and the plate 154 to their normal positions.
Each of the counters 148 to 152, inclusive, has an operating plate 174 which is pivoted upon the counter supporting shaft 178, see
180 with a star wheel 181, see Fig. 10, to
which is pivoted a combined transferring and resetting pawl 182. Secured to the counter shaft 178 and in the same plane as the pawl 182 is a combined transfer and resetting disk 183. This pawl 182 projects beneath the flange of the tens counter wheel and said flange is provided with projections 184 which extend inwardly toward the shaft 17 8, as shown in Fig. 11. In the figure just mentioned the units counter wheel 185 carrying the pawl 182 shown in said figure, stands at eight and at the next movement of said wheel the forward end of the pawl Will engage with the camming projections 186 of the disk 183 and elevate the tens and the hundredth wheel is identical with that just described it is thought that no further description is necessary.
Each of the rollers 173 on the plates 174 project through openings 189 in one of the sides of the frame 153 and the movements of said plates are limited by the contact of the rollers with the ends of the slots or openings 189, each of the plates being returned to its normal position after being 0perated by its actuating device 163 by a spring 190 which is secured to the lower end of the plate 174 and to the frame 153.
Each of the counter shafts 178 has secured to one end thereof a knurled wheel 191 by which the said shafts may be rotated. Each of these shafts is flattened upon one side so that when the shaft is rotated by its wheel 191 it will carry the disk 183 therewith. During the rotation of the disks 183 the projections 186 will engage with the head of the pawls 182 and carry the same and the wheels to which they are connected until zero appears. Each of the knurled wheels 191, see Fig. 7, is provided with a V shaped notch 192 with which prongs 193 projecting from a segmental plate 194 engage so as to prevent any movement of said wheels. The segmental plate 194 carrying the prongs 193 is held in this position by a coiled spring 195 and is elevated to release the wheels 191 by lifting the projection 196 which extends toward the front of the machine. Vhen any of the wheels 191 is started the plate 194 will be held in'its elevated position by one of the prongs bearing upon the periphery of the corresponding wheel 191 but as soon as the V shaped notch 192 presents itself the plate carrying the prong will be lowered by its spring 195 to bring the prong into position positively to arrest the wheel 191 at the end of the rotation thereof at which time the counter wheels 185 are returned to zero position.
A suitable hinged cover 197 partially shown in Fig. 7, is provided for the special counters and this cover has a lug 198 which normally rests above the forward end of the projection 196 of the slide 194. When the slide 194 is elevated to enable the resetting of any or all of the special counters the forward edge of the projection 196 passes in the path of the lug 198 and prevents the complete closing of the cover 197 until the counters are reset and the slide returned to normal position.
