THOMAS J. POLSON Improvement in Motive Powe-r.
Witnesses:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS J. POLSON, OF KILMIOHAEL, MISSISSIPPI.
IMPROVEMENT IN MOTIVE POWERS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. POLSON, of Kilmichael, in the county of Montgomery and in the State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Motive Power; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference be in g had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a lever motive power for running cotton-gins or other machinery, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side view, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of my machine.
A represents the framework necessary to contain my machinery. B is an upright shaft, to the lower end of which is attached a large co g-wheel, 0, provided with the usual sweep for attaching the horses. The cog-wheel 0 gears with a smaller idle cog-wheel, D, and this with a pinion, E. Upon the same shaft which holds this pinion is a crank-wheel, G, connected by a pitman, H, with the long end of a lever, I. This lever is pivoted at a suitable point on the frame A, and the shorter end of the same is, by another pit-man, J, connected with a crank-wheel, K, upon a shaft, L. The shaft L is provided with apulley, M, to be connected by a belt with the machinery to be driven.
By this arrangement a considerable amount of power is gained for the propulsion of any machinery. It is also advantageous in that it can be placedin any position desired. I have special ly designed this power for running cotto-ngins, but it may be used for any kind of machinery.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement of the shaft 13, cog-wheels G D, pinion E, crank-wheels G K, pitmen H J, lever I, and shaft L with pulley M, all substantially as shown and described, and for the pun poses herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of August, 1871.
Witnesses: T. J. POLSON.
