HY PODERMIC STERILIZER.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented June 6, 1916.
Application led April 22, 1915. Serial No. 23,149. i
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED OWEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Maplewood, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Hypodermic Sterilizer, of
which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improved sterilizing device and has for an object to provide a simple effective arrangement whereby unused needles may be continually maintained in a 'sterilized condition, while one that is in use may be readily sterilized.
Another object of the invention is to provide a receptacle formed with a plurality of attachments, one of which is adapted to receive a syringe with its needle and the other of which is adapted to receive a number of spare needles.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective View of an embodiment of the invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through the structure shown in Fig. l, the same being on a slightly enlarged scale; Fig. 3 is a section through Fig. 2 approximately on line 3 3; Fig. 4 isa detail fragmentary sectional view through a needle holder, the same being taken approximately on line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
' Referring to the accompanying drawings by numeral, l indicates a container of refractory material, as for instance, glass, porcelain or the like. This container is adapted to contain a disinfecting medium 2 of any suitable kind, which preferably fills the container to near the top, as shown in Fig. 2. A cap or lid 3 is provided having suitable turned-down sides and ends for producing a flange, said cap being formed preferably -of metal. The cap is provided with an opening 4 adapted to receive the lid or covering member 5 of the spare needle holder 6. The needle holder 6 is provided with a handle member 7 so that the same may be applied and removed at any time. The lid or covering member 5 is preferably formed with a flange 8 overlapping the cover 3 somewhat, as shown in Fig; 2, so as to make a reasonably tight lit and to support the device in position. The needle holder 6 is also provided with a comparatively long depending stem 9 having a base 10 preferably formed as a disk and provided with a plurality of bores 11 merglng into slots 12, as shown Amore clearly in vFig. 4. The spare needles may be mounted in the disk l0 and maintained sterilized by continuous contact with the sterilizing matter 2 and are always in condition for ready access whenever desired.
Arranged preferably adjacent one end of the lid 3 is a tubular vmember 13 which is provided with a pressed-out annular flange 14 and a turned-over end portion or flange 15, whereby the tubular portion is firmly clamped to the lid 3 as shown in Fig. 2. This tubular portion is intended to receive a syringe 16 of any desired kind, said syringe being supported by the usual finger members 17 so that the needle 18 will be submerged or brought into contact with the sterilizing matter 2.
What I claim is 1. In a device of the character described, a container, a needle supporting member provided with a depending stem, and a disk arranged adjacent the bottom of the stem, said disk being provided with a plurality of openings and slots merging into said openings, said slots extending from the periphery of the disk to' the openings, said openings being adapted to receive needles, and means for supporting said needle supporting member so that the disk will sustain the needles carried thereby above the bottom of the container.
2. In a device of the character described, a container for receiving a disinfecting matter, a lid therefor formed with a pair of openings, a tubular member fitted into one of said openings and upstanding therefrom, said tubular member being adapted to receive a syringe, and a needle supporting member arranged in the other of said openings.
3. In a device of the character described, a container for receiving sterilizing material, a lid for the-container, said lid being formed with an aperture, and a needle supporting member coacting with said lid, said needle supporting member being formed with a covering disk fitting said aperture, said disk being formed with means overlapping the aperture whereby the same is supported, a handle extending from one side of said disk and a depending member extending from the other side of said disk, said depending member being formed with an enlargement having apertures, said enlargement being arranged at an appreciable distance from said disk whereby the needles carried in Said apertures will be spaced from seid lid and will be` suspended above the bottoni of the container.
e. ln e sterilizing device of the character ldescribed, a. container, e covering member therefor formed with en upstending tube open at the top and bottom for receiving e syringe and Supporting the seine so that ythe lower part of the syringe will' extend below the covering nieinber and with an opening through which articles nitty be placed in the container.
5. In a sterilizing device of the character described, e container, a. lid therefor formed with an opening, and a, needle carrying device arranged to nt. in seid opening, said needle carrying device being provided with e covering member normally covering seid opening and overlapping the seine so es to be supported by the lid and a. depending portion having e. dering section adjacent the bottom, said Haring section being provided with openings for receiving needles whereby the needles may be submerged in e. sterilizmeeee ing metter arranged in seid container, seid covering member being also formed with e knob by which the covering member may be inserted and removed without the hand of the operator coming into Contact with said needles.
6. ln e. device of the character described, e. container, e covering member therefor provided with en. opening, and e tubular inem ber secured to said covering member, seid tubular member being openet the ends end being formed with a pair of beads which straddle bert of the covering member at seid opening, whereby an article suspended in seid tubular member may be projected into the container and be supported by the tubular member and the covering member.
ln testimony whereof l have signed my neme to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALFRED OWEN. l/Vitnesses:
M. V. Ferrie, C. L. CONSTANTINIDES.
