zen of the United States, residing at Ains- I worth, in the county of Brown and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following 1s a 'speclficatlon.
This invention relates to an improvement in gates, and has for its principal'object to provide a gate consisting of such parts that it may be constructed of metallic sheets or plates, the structure to consist'of few and simple parts so that manufacture may be economical.
Another object is to provide convenient means for a control of the gate.
While the invention is shown and de-' scribed as a gate, it may be used to advan tage as a barn door or shed door or for railway cars, or similar purposes, in instances where tracks or rollers are required for supporting the weight of doors.
The invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as described herein and claimed, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, it being understood that changes may be made in form, size, proportion and minor details without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages, the scope of the invention being determined by the appended claims.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a view of the gate in side elevation. Fig. 2 shows a side view of a facing plate. Fig. 3 is a view showing a reinforcing plate. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing a part of a framing plate. Fig. 5 is a view in transverse section showing a part of a foot rail.
The gate consists, in part, of a top rail 1, a foot rail 2, these being disposed horizontally and connected at their ends by the pair of vertical reinforcing plates 3 which are securedthereto by means of bolts or keepers a. Any suitable framing members may be employed and interposed between the upper and lower rails and connected with the reinforcing plates, as the strips 9 and suitable braces 10, each strip preferably being secured at its ends by keepers 11 to the reinforcingplates mentioned, said strips preferably being provided with terminal flanges 12, in which the keepers 11 engage.
In order that the gates and gate posts 14 may be manufactured economically and may be shipped to advantage, attenuated, metallic plates are employed in the construction of approximately all the parts, and these parts are limited in number so far as will be consistent with durability and the production of a strong structure.
The upper and lower rails or parts of the gate frame are preferably uniform in structure since each consists of a pair of'rectangula'r, rectilinear plates 6 and Z), each being bent transversely adjacent to its longitudinal edges to provide a pair of substantially parallel terminal flanges indicated respectively at c and c and (Z and (Z, the plates at each pair being disposed with their flanges 0 and c abutting, their flanges (Z and d providing two opposed walls for a channel 15 (Fig. 5) disposed below the abutting flanges c and 0, the last named flanges being secured together by means of bolts or keepers 16.
Reinforcing plates 3 are each provided with a slot 17 (Fig. 3) opening on 1ts lower end, and when assembling the parts, the forks or prongs 6 thus provided for said reinforcing plates, are disposed astride the abutting flanges 0 and 0 adjacent to the ends of the .lower rail 2, the upper ends of the reinforcing plates being received in the channel 15 of the rail 1.
Numerals 18 indicate a pair of facing plates, each being secured by means of suitable keepers to the ends of a top rail and foot rail, and also secured upon the outer side of the reinforcing plate.
Any suitable degree of attenuity. may be provided for'the metal employed, so that the weight of the gate may be practical. The gate is arranged to slide lengthwise for purposes of opening and closing the same while supported, in part, upon rollers 19 .which are disposed in alinement, said rollers being removably mounted or having bearings in suitably supported castings 20, said gate also being supported in part by the wheel 22 and roller 23, each having bearings in the side plates 7 ofthe gate post 14. By means of the supports as described it-will be seen that the gate is at all .times sustained at different parts of its length by the wheel 22 and one or more rollers 1901' 23, and may be moved by means of a very limited force.
In order that the gate may be opened or closed by a person while at a remote distance, certain strands or cables are provided, one of said cables being indicated at 26 and having one of its ends connected with a latch 28, at one end of the gate, its opposite end being secured upon a pin or like holder 29 upon the opposite end of the gate; the operative parts, however, for moving the gate, are not described herein, since the invention has reference more particularly to its structural parts.
Numeral 84 indicates an aperture formed in a side plate of the gate post 14, through which the cabl or strand 26 may extend.
Numeral 37 (Fig. 5) indicates a filler strip which may be constructed of any suitable material, and which may be secured in the channel 15 of the foot rail to partly fill said channel so that the rollers 19 and 23 may have a limited diameter while engaging in said channel; and it is obvious that this member 37 may be dispensed with, if desired, by changing the proportion of parts.
Having described the construction in detail, a further explanation relating to operation is not necessary.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,-
1. A gate comprising an upper framing rail, a lower framing rail substantially parallel therewith, each consisting of a pair of rectangular, rectilinear plates each being bent transversely adjacent to its longitudinal edges to provide a pair of substantially parallel, terminal flanges, the plates of each pair being disposed with two of their flanges abutting, their other flanges providing two opposed walls for a channel disposed below the abutting flanges, keepers traversing th abutting flanges, a pair'of reinforcing plates, each being provided with a slot opening on one of its ends and disposed with the walls of its slot engaging the abutting flanges adjacent to one end of the lower framing rail, facing plates engaging the reinforcing plates and ends of the framing rails, and framing members interposed between the upper and lower rails and connected with the reinforcing plates.
2. A gate comprising an upper framing rail, a lower framing rail, each consisting of a pair of rectangular plates each being bent transversely adjacent to its longitudinal edges to provide a pair of substantially parallel, terminal flanges, the plates of each pair being disposed with two of their flanges abutting, their other flanges providing two opposed walls for a channel disposed below the abutting flanges, a pair of substantially parallel reinforcing plates disposed with their lower ends engaging the abutting flanges adjacent to the ends of the lower framing rail, their upper ends engaging in the channel adjacent to the ends of the upper framing rail, keepers traversing the reinforcing plates and engaging the abutting flanges of the lower framing rail, keepers traversing the flanges of the upper framing rail and engaging the reinforcing plates, and framing members interposed between the upper and lower rails and connected with the reinforcing plates.
