No. 118,568 Patented Aug. 29, 1871.
'wimasszs. INVENTVUR.
PATENT OFFICE.
PETER S. WHITMAN, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN OVERSHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,568, dated August 29, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER S. WHITMAN, of the city and county of Providence and State of Ithode Island, have invented a certain Improvement in Overshoes, of which the following is a specification 'My invention consists in attaching a strap to the heel of a rubber or rubber-cloth overshoe, substantially in the manner hereinafter described, for the purpose of pulling the shoe on and 01f.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of a rubber overshoe with my improvement attached. Fig. 2 is a back view ofthe same.
The strap a is securely attached to the shoe at b, near the bottom, on the outside, and then, passing up to the top of the shoe, is doubled down and fastened again at 0, having between the two points of fastening a space, d, Fig. 1, sufficient to insert the finger easily. Strong inelastic Web is a good material for the strap. This, when neatly cut and covered with rubber, in the same manner as the rest of the shoe, and made to fit snugly, does not disfigure the article, and adds greatly to the convenience in putting on and in removing the shoe. The adhesion of the rubber, as it is applied in a fluid state in making the shoe, is sufficient to fasten this strap in its place. Any other suitable material may be employed.
I claim- A vulcanized India-rubber shoe, provided with a heel-strap, one end of which is attached to the heel of the shoe near the bottom, and the other, being carried to the top, is doubled under and fastened, leaving a loop or space between the two points of attachment, and the fastening being efiected solely by the adhesion of the rubber as applied in the process of manufacturing the shoe.
