UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HEAD-RESTS FOR COFFINS.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,565, dated August 29, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN P. WVAUGH, of South Scriba, in the county of Oswego and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Coffins; and I do hereby declarethat the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in coffins; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the head-rest, as hereinafter described.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the coflin. Fig. 2 is a crosssection on the line as a; of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the headrest detached.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
I propose to make a head-rest, A, of sheet metal or any other suitable material, by shaping a plate, B, of suitable size, with at cavity, 0, in the upper side, and extending to one edge for the head of the corpse, and a flange, D, extending around three sides of the plate and upward from it for nailing to the inner walls of the coffin.
This makes a very simple and cheap head-rest, which may be applied to the coffin after the lat ter has been made.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The head-rest A, provided with the cavity 0 and with a flange, D, whereby it is secured to the walls of the coffin, as shown and described.
