IMPROVEMENT IN CHURN-POWERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,529, dated August 29, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEvI A. HAIGIIT, of Cairo, in the county of Greene and State of New York,
haveinvented anew and Improved Uhuru-Power,
and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in appa ratus for applying power to churns for working them; and it consists in an arrangement of a foot-treadle and hand-lever with a crank-shaft and an arrangement of the crank-shaft with the walking-beam, having the dasher of a churn attached to each end, all as hereinafter'described.
Figure l is a side elevation of my improved apparatus, and Fig. 2 is an end elevation.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is a crank-shaft, mounted in suitable supports B a suitable distance above the bed-piece D, and carrying abalance-wheel, E. To this crankshaft I connect afoot-treadle, F, by a connectingrod, G, and to this treadle I attach the arm H rigidly, and arrange it to rise upward in such relation to the treadle that an operator working the treadle by the foot, whether sitting or standing; may take hold of it to add the power of his hands,
also, that the work maybe divided between the members and made less fatiguing to either, while it affords means for applying more power when required than can be done by the hands alone.
For working the walking-beam I, to which the churn-dashers are attached, I connect a crank J, with a slotted arm, L, hanging from the said.' walking-beam, at the joint wherein it is pivoted, and rigidly connected to it. The crank is provided with an anti-friction roller to work against the walls of the slot to reduce the friction. The supports B are extended sufficiently above the supports or bearings of the crank-shaft to afford a support for the pivot on which the walking-beam acts, and the whole apparatus is mounted on a platform, constituting a portable machine.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A churn-actuating apparatus, comprising the foot-treadle F, hand-lever H, connecting-rod G, crankshaft A, balance-wheel E, friction-roller O, slotted arm L, and walking-beam I, all arranged together, and with the supports therefor and the churns on a portable platform constituting a portable apparatus, all substantially as specified.
LEVI A. HAIGHT.
