Description
PATENT FFICE.
CHARLESH. EARLE, OF DE PERE, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHIMNEV-STOPS.A
Speciication forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,521, dated August 29, 1871.
To all whom it may concern: p
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. EARLE, of De Pere, in the county of Brown and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and improved Chimney-Stop; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this speciication.
Fi gine 1 represents a vertical central section of my improx'ed chimney-stop on the line c c, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same on the line K K, Fig. l'.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new fastening at tachment to a chimney-stop or plate for holding the same in place so that it will effectually prevent sparks and fire from entering' the room through the hole in the chimney. The invention consists in the application of an expansible elliptical spring to the inner side of the plate, which spring is enlarged after the plate is applied to fasten it to the chimney.
A in the drawing represents the chimney-stop, of circular or other form. Bis an elliptic spring placed against the inner side of the plate A, and secured thereto by means of a bolt, C. This bolt passes loose through the plate A, -and screws into a nut, a, which is secured to the inner leaf of the spring'. The outer leaf of the spring has a notch or recess cut into it, which embraces the bolt and Vrests on a shoulder ofthe same. A strap, D, fastened with one end to the inner face of the plate, laps over the outer leaf of the spring, an d is held thereon by a pivoted button, b. Vhen the button is turned aside theouter leaf of the sprin g can be detached from the bolt and replaced. The stop or plate A is placed against the hole in the chimney so that the spring will enter said hole. Then the bolt C is turned by means of a head, f, at its end, so as to contract the leaves of the spring, thereby lengthening it and causing' the ends to bear against the sides ofthe hole withsuficientpower for holding' the stop in place. E is a foot for supporting the plate when not used. A pin, d, projecting from the foot, enters a socket, e, which is provided on the plate, as Shown.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The spring B and bolt C applied to a chimney-stop, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
CHARLES H. EARLE.
