DISAPPEARING BED.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RICHARD F. BEAMER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Disappearing Beds, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to beds which are adapted to be moved into a closet or recess when not in use, and the opening to said closet closed by a door.

The object of the invention is to provide an apparatus whereby the bed is connected intermediate its sides to one side of an 0 ening in a wall of less width than the be so that the bed may move through the opening to lie on either side of the wall, and the opening may be closed by a sliding door when the bed is in either position; the door being arranged on that side of the opening to which the bed is connected.

The invention possesses other advantageous features, which, with the foregoing will be set forth in the following description where I shall outline in full that form or embodiment of the invention which I have selected for illustration in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the present specification.

The novelty of the invention will be included in the claims succeeding said description. From this it will be apparent that I do not restrict myself to the showing made by said drawings and description as I may adopt many variations within the scope of my invention as expressed in said claims.

Referring to the drawings-Figure 1 is a top view of the apparatus of my invention, partly in section showing the bed in the room, the sliding door being entirely open; Fig. 2 is an elevation showing that side of the opening from which the door slides'outward; Fig. 3 is a side view of one of the track sections showing the carrier in place therein; Fig. 4: is a longitudinal section taken through an end track-section; Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the end track-section taken immediately behind the front flanges. Figs. 1 and 5 should be read by giving the sheet of drawings a quarter turn to the right.

mounted on the side toward which the door moves in its closing movement. This method of arranging the bed possesses certain disadvantages due to the fact that a given amount of clear wall must be left on each side of the opening. On one side enough space must be reserved to form the pocket for the sliding door. The bed projects backward, in either position, on the other side so that suflicient space must be left clear to provide the necessary clearance for the bed. In other words, when the bed is pivoted to one side of an opening and the sliding door moves from the other side, the opening can not occur in the corner of a room. construction, however, the bed extends past the opening on the same side on which the sliding door is arranged, so that the other side of the opening may lie adjacent the corner when desired. In this specification I have referred to the apparatus as a mounting for a bed, but it is to be understood that other articles may be substituted for the bed, and caused to swing through the opening in the same manner.

The wall is provided with an opening which is adapted to be closed by the sliding door 2 which seats in the wall 3 at one side of the opening and abuts against the frame 4 at the other side of the opening when the door is closed.

Arranged on the edge of the wall or supporting structure 3 and on the forward edge of the door 2 are a plurality of tracks 5, each formed of three track-sections 67-8; sections 6 and 8 being mounted in the wall on opposite sides of the door and section 7 being arranged in the door. These sections are provided with suitable flanges 9 by which they are attached to their respective structures. The track sections are in the form of grooves having their front faces constricted by the flanges 12, thereby producing the slot 13 through which the arm 14 of the carriage 15 passes. The sections 6 and 8 are closed at their outside ends by the walls 16 which halt the travel of the carriage at either end. The carriages 15 are preferably constructed with a plurality of rollers, one set 17 bearing against the flange 12 and the other 18 bearing against the bottom of the groove, thereby supporting the vertical and lateral thrusts due to the weight of the bed.
