PIPE-GRIPPING ATTACHMENT FOR VISES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 30, 1916.-
Application filed September 24. 1915. Serial No. 52,475.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST H. Pnr'rrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Niagara Falls, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Gripping Attachments for Vises; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to detachable jaws adapted for connection with the clamping jaws of an ordinary bench vise, and the primary object of the invention is to provide pipe gripping jaws which may be detachably mounted upon the gripping jaws of a vise.-
Another object of this invention is to provide a vise attachment as specified, which includes plates which are mounted over the jaws of the vise and removably supports pipe gripping jaws which are constructed so that the pressure of the gripping of the pipe will be applied directly to the gripping faces of the bench vise.
With the foregoing and other objects in view this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like and corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved pipe clamping jaws, showing them attached to an ordinary bench vise, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the pipe gripping jaws, Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of one of the jaws which are mounted upon one of the bench vise jaws, Fig. 4 is a fragmetnary perspective view of one of the housings or bodies of the vise attachment, Fig. 5 is a sectional view through the vise attachment, and Fig. 6 is a horizontal section on the line 5 6-6 of Fig. 1, showing parts broken away.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates a bench vise of the ordinary construction, which is provided with clamping jaws 2 and 3, one of which is slidably supported by the other, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The invention includes casings or houslngs 4 and 5, which are provided for receiving the ends of the clamping aws 2 and 3 therein, as is clearly shown in Fig. l. The housings or bodies 4 and 5 are provlded with recesses 6 formed therein, in
which the ends of the jaws 2 and 3 extend.
The housing 4 is providedwith a laterally extending opening 8, which extends entirely through the face 9 of the same. The opening 8 is provided for receiving the inner end of a jaw member 10, which jaw member extends through the base of the housing and engaging the face of the vise clamping jaw, so that pressure applied to the clamping jaw 10 will be administered directly to the face of the clamping jaw 2. The clamping jaw 10 is provided with a substantially triangularly shaped opening 11 extending inwardly from its outer edge, substantially centrally of its ends. The walls of the sub stantially triangularly shaped opening 11.-
are corrugated, as shown at 12, so as to permit a firm grip to be had upon a pipe, round bar or other round article. housing 5, which is provided with the opening 6 that is adapted for receiving the jaw 3, is provided with a pair of transversely extending openings 15 and 16. The openings 15 and 16 extend entirely through the base plate 17 of the housing 5 and receive gripping or clamping jaw members 19 and 20, which are provided with substantially triangularly shaped openings21 extending inwardly from their forward edges. The walls of the opening 21 are corrugated, as is shown at 22, so as to insure a firm grip upon a pipe, rod or round article. The jaws 19 and are disposed staggeredly with respect to the jaw 10, as is clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 6 of the drawings. The housing 4 has lugs 23 and 24 formed up'oristhe face of the same, through which lugs a pin 25 extends. The pin 25 also extendsthrough the clamping jaw 10 and holds this jaw securely connected to the housing 5. Lugs 26, 27 and 28 are formed upon the face of the housing 5, and a pin 29 extends through these lugs and the jaws 19 and 20 for detachably holding these jaws properly connected to the housings. The housings 4 and 5 have set screws 30 inserted through their corresponding ends, which set screws are provided for engagement with the sides of the vise jaws for clamping the housings upon a vise.
The Y In reducing the invention to practice, certain minor features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may necessitate alteration, to Which the patentee is entitled, provided such alterations are comprehended within the scope of What is claimed.
I What is claimed is 1. In a pipe gripping attachment for Vises, a pair of housings adapted for receiving the clamping faces of ordinary vise gripping jaws, means for preventing accidental movement of the housings With respect to the vise jaws when attached thereto, one of said housings being provided with a transversely extending slot formed therein and extending entirely through the base of the same, a pipe gripping jaw having a portion thereof inserted into said slot, a pin connecting said pipe gripping jaw to said housings, the other of said housings being provided with a pair of spaced slots extending entirely through the face of the same, pipe gripping jaws having portions thereof mounted in said slots and disposed staggeredly to the pipe gripping jaw carried by the first mentioned housing, and pins extending through said pipe gripping jaws for connecting said jaws to said housings.
2. In a pipe gripping attachment for same, pipe gripping jaws having portions Vises, a pair of housings adapted for receiving the clamping faces of ordinary vise gripping jaws, means for preventing accidental movement of the housings with respect to the vise jaws when attached thereto, one of said housings being provided with a transversely extending slot formed therein and extending entirely through the base of the same, a pipe gripping jaw having a portion thereof inserted into said slot, a pin connecting said pipe gripping jaw to said housings, the other of said housings being provided with a pair of spaced slots extending entirely through the face of the thereof mounted in said slots and disposed staggeredly to the pipe gripping jaw car ried by the first mentioned housing, pins extending through said pipe gripping jaws for connecting said jaws to said housings, said pipe clamping aws having their inner ends positioned for engagement with the gripping faces of an ordinary vise.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ERNEST I-L PETTIT.
