WINDOW-SHADE RGLLER.
Application filed October 6, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ADDISON J. Sounnns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Connwall, Stormont county, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and useful Window-Shade Roller, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a window-shade roller, and the invention aims primarily to improve the construction of the pawls and to improve the construction of the mounting of the pawls.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in'view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention. resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of What is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing :-Figure 1 shows the invention in side elevation, parts being broken away and sectioned; Fig. 2 is a composite perspective showing the pawls and attendant parts separated; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 1 is a top plan showing one end of the roller.
In the accompanying drawings there is shown one end of a roller 1 having a recess 2 defining a shell 3 provided with opposed notches 41: receiving against rotation independently of the roller 1, a box-like bearing 5 embodying a base 6, slides 7 and a front composed of flanges 8 parallel to the base (3 and spaced apart to define an opening 9. The base 6 of the bearing 5 is equipped with inwardly projecting ears 11 having openings 14, the ears being received in slots 10 formed longitudinally of the shell 3 in the interior thereof and at the end of the shell. The bearing 5 is held onto the end of the roller 1 by means of a cap 23 secured to and surrounding the roller 1, the cap having a flange 2 1 which overlaps the outer face of the bearing. Located in the recess 2 is a shaft 12 surrounded at its outer end by a reinforcing ferrule 15. The invention comprises a spindle which, to all intents and Specification of Letters Patent.

In the shank 16 of the spindle 17 there is an opening 25 adapted to receive a securing element 26 mounted in the shaft 12. The spindle 17 terminates in a flattened end 18 carrying disks 19 and 20, the disk 19 being rotatable in an opening 21 formed in the base 6 of the bearing 5 and the disk 20 being rotatable in an opening formed by two opposed notches 22 fashioned in the edges of the flanges 8 Which form the front of the bearing 5.
Surrounding the shaft 12 is a spiral sprlng 27, one end 28 of which is secured to the shaft, the other end 29 of the spring 27 being threaded through the openings 14: in the cars 11 of the bearing 5 and being secured to one of the ears. Mounted for right line movement in the bearing 5 toward and away from each other are opposed pawls 30 each comprising a lateral arm 32 and a finger 31 which is rounded at its inner corner as shown at 33. The pawls 30 tend to move by gravity toward the axis of the spindle 17 but, by inertia, when the spindle and the shaft are rotated rapidly, tend to move outwardly. The fingers 31 of the pawls engage the fiattened spindle 16 between the disks 19 and 20, one pawl at a time ordinarily coacting with the spindle, as aforesaid, to prevent an accidental rotation thereof. The inner edges of the arms 32 of the spindle coact with the edges of the spindle 17 to limit the movement of the pawls toward the axis of rotation of the spindle. When the roller 1' is rotated, as in the act of unreeling the curtain therefrom, the flattened spindle 17, between the disks 19 and 20, coacts with the inner end of the finger 31 of the engaged pawl and lifts the pawl, an unreeling of the curtain thus being possible, there be ing no binding effect between the spindle and the pawl, by reason of the fact that the corner of the finger 31 of the pawl is rounded as shown at 33. The pawl thus will be forced outwardly, while the curtain is being unreeled, but each pawl tends to move toward the axis of rotation of the roller, when the latter is brought to rest.
WVhen the roller 1 is rotated rapidly, the pawls tend to fly outwardly, toward the perimeter of the roller, as is common with all pawls in devices of this type.
